The sad thing is Salieri took care of Mozart's child after Mozart died. He recognized Mozart's genius and we ironically have all of Mozart's beautiful music precisely because of people like Salieri. I realize the movie was based on a play but it still did horrible damage to this man's reputation.

It's also important to remember that - at the time - Salieri was the more famous and respected composer of the two. He and Wolfie were actually quite friendly with each other and there is some evidence to suggest that Mozart envied Salieri's work (if not his success). Re-assessing Salieri from the distance of 200+ years, it is unfair to brand him as "a mediocrity;" his music is very enjoyable in its own terms and he was really quite competent at what he did. I would even go so far as to say that he would compare favorably with any of his contemporaries. True, he's no Mozart or Beethoven, but taken on his own terms in the context of what other "B-list" composers of the time were putting out, Salieri has nothing to be ashamed of.

The people who believed the movie salieri wouldn't have cared about the music and so wouldn't have affected his image. The people who became interested in salieri through the movie would find the truth and so would benefit his image. The movie was all round good for his music's preservation.

To those of you who were wondering, Amadeus is based on a play, which took many liberties with Salieri's and Mozart's lives. While Mozart did actually not finish Requiem, it was not Salieri who helped him finish it, but Mozart's protege, Franz Xaver Süssmayr. In reality, Salieri and Mozart had a friendly rivalry going on between them, and both enjoyed each other's compositions.
@ernshaw78
@ernshaw78 8 лет назад
+Edgar Vilhelm I am glad you know as such. I'm not sure how friendly it was, since Mozart's nephew Carl Maria von Weber...was not so convinced of how friendly that rivalry was, and when asked to join the group Salieri was in he refused on the grounds of how badly they had treated his uncle,

This is a beautiful and brilliant piece. Salieri was the established court composer and was beloved by all. It's funny that his music dropped out of favor but it is in a revival now. However, Mozart was a genius. We have very few genii at that level in music. JS Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Wilson, Lennon, Glass. (I use genii advisedly.) One might want to put the father of the symphony in that list.

@bmort1313
@bmort1313 7 лет назад
Thing is, Salieri always had a good reputation, especially in his hometown. The movie "Amadeus" set no precedence on how people thought of Salieri because everybody assumed that not many people knew the real Salieri. In fact, the people of Legnago (his hometown) sued Milos Forman for how they portrayed him in the film. The movie actually angered people rather than educated them on him.
@arthurlecomte8950
@arthurlecomte8950 4 года назад
That would be boring. The great thing about Amadeus is that no one is a real hero. A hero is an artificially created alteration of an important person, a story we tell ourselves for inspiration. Salieri has good and decent qualities, and he's a great composer, but his orderliness limits his creativity. Mozart is shown as a performing monkey, trained and abused by his father. He becomes an adult, but still behaves as a child. But he also creates the most divine music. There is no one completely sympathetic or good, and that makes it one of the best plays/movies of all time.

Robert Olin His music isn't portrayed that badly in Amadeus. The little piano piece he made for Mozart's entrance may have been simple but he was still recognised as the Kappelmeister (court composer). Only Mozart really mocked him, and Mozart was pretty caricatured in the film. Salieri was one of the greatest of the era, taught by Gassman, he actually helped further Mozart's career and they even composed together, though that work was sadly lost. He also went on to teach , amongst others, List, Schubert and Beethoven. His music is most definitely worth a youtubing.

We see him conducting his own works and tutoring talented singers, and his own envious assessment of Mozart's abilities compared to his own is only possible from one who is on a similar level as Mozart. Composer Antonio Salieri deserves the kindest words not only as an outstanding composer who wrote a huge number of works in different genres, but also as a wonderful person and educator who brought up a number of outstanding composers. I really can't understand how Salieri was demonized in such a manner in the film "Amadeus", and even portrayed as a mediocre composer. It is the first time I hear this, and I find nothing wrong or trivial. In fact, it is an excellent piece. Really, the movie should be remade.

The story of the movie never said he was mediocre. Just that he professed to feel that way in comparison to Mozart, based on his real-life proclamation in his last years that he killed Mozart (which he didn't really do). And it's true that his music faded into obscurity over the time while Mozart's endured; if not for Amadeus, not nearly as many people would've heard of him.

Whilst some in the past have criticized this composer - there is nothing superficial nor mediocre about this sublime Requiem. It is expressive in mood, well-written, touching the listener's higher emotions, yet suitably-restrained in the more joyous passages. Salieri seems to have a spiritual dimension, considering that this setting has a devotional self-effacing thread throughout as a Liturgical composition ought to. At this Commemorative time of year, I also can say : RIP, Antonio Salieri.

It has always been a fact that some very virtuous composers and musicians do not get the praise that they deserve. Salieri was pretty well-known during his time, but now he is almost forgotten. This is mostly due to character assassinations that started during the nationalism period of the 19th and 20th century. He was a great composer, no doubt about that.

I recall reading that while the EVENTS depicted in the play and film are not strictly historical, the dialogue and many situations are based on actual events and - in the case of the original stage play - based on word for word translations of actual letters written by Mozart and others involved. Of course the film version dressed things up quite a bit, but I would never presume to think that any Hollywood film is 100% accurate.

I can now understand why Salieri retired at the beginning of the 19th century and why he quietly rejected the new forms that were appearing as chaotic. There is a straightforward simplicity to Salieri's music which nonetheless shows great skill and mastery - echoing Vivaldi to a significant extent. There is a manic creativity to Mozart's compositions which Salieri lacks - yet Salieri is nevertheless clearly a master in his own right.

I think Salieri would be honored to know his music is forever connected with that of his chosen successor. It's sad to see Hollywood and history itself bastardize the relationship between Salieri and Mozart for cheap dramatic effect. The fact is, Mozart was considered as a bit of a side show (as a former child prodigy) during his era. Salieri was one of the few who recognized Mozart as being the "next step" in music, whereas Salieri's compositions were the best and thus most popular of their present time. Salieri, who was actually successful at the time (unlike Mozart) often provided economic relief to Mozart anonymously simply because he was a fan!
