Ah the Renaissance! How modern and different it sounds to our 20th-21st Century ears! That was beautiful Catalina, so much expression from an instrument that always produces the same volume no matter how one plays it (except for the various stops that can change the tone and decay). I just read your biography Catalina, and now I know why you are so beautiful, you are Chilean!

I really enjoyed your rubato/sprezzatura playing. As a composer, I often put affetti-passages into my music - nevertheless, most musicians just doodle over these - I'm sure you wouldn't! But the pieces I'm refering to are not for solo keybord. Nevertheless, I would be proud if you would be intersted in looking into some of my works.

a reference to the actual instrument used in this recording would be handy. Beautiful, mellow voicing and generous on the ear. Tuning used?

I thought I remember reading something about harpsichord tuning being different than today's standard 440hz A tuning. Does this demonstration compensate for that? Or does it not need to and I'm mistaken?

Not only harpsichords, but All instruments have been subject to various tuning standards --- or a lack of them --- through the centuries. A440 is a relatively modern one. Many pipe organs and harpsichords were originally tuned to whatever pitch the builder thought appropriate. Personally, I find that 440 makes string instruments, particularly violins, sound shrill. There are higher tunings, too, which to me sound not only shrill but just plain bad.

I thoroughly agree David. My Dulcken turned out a fourth below modern pitch. It’s much more resonant as a result. But then I prefer the viola to the violin. I think this Italian harpsichord May be tuned to A 415 often called baroque pitch.

Mean tone temperament, maybe?

@@mroldnewbie As an engineer and musician, I find that interesting. I would think, if anything, that the "standard" tune of the day would be lower due to the strength of materials of widely available manufactured goods. On the other hand, if the Renaissance spanned 300 years, I would think they would have vastly improved their manufacturing methods!

@@Waymar07 I think the harpsichord is tuned in quarter-comma meantone temperament in this video.

as often happens Italian music for harpsichord is interpreted without an interpretive direction. It is lacking in rhetorical sense. It's boring, maybe it's the fault of his teachers. I feel a stylistic presence unrelated to the Neapolitan tradition
