This is why your videos are the best, I had never considered visiting Antwerp before but watching this has made me realise its a very attractive city. Considering all the fighting there in WW2 it seems like a lot of the old buildings have survived, thanks very much for showing us around!
My birth place and my hometown. I could show you so many more beautiful places around Antwerp! Thx for sharing. And this was during the pandemic because it’s usually much more busy in the City!
As an Antwerpenaar myself; it's still so surprising to see the city so empty on a sunny day in August! I know it was due to covid, but on a day like this you would have a hard time moving around, there are usually so many people out and about and the terraces are full! :D Thanks for this lovely tour, I love my city!
Pretty difficult to imagine a tidier and cleaner city anywhere around the world. Many beautiful structures and buildings. I have to name the Central Train Station (outside, and even more the inside ) and these random gorgeous buildings @ 11:21 Merci beaucoup BookingHunterTV et Bravo.
Brabo cut of the hand of the Giant and threw it away in the river "De Schelde". "Throwing a hand" means in Dutch "Hand werpen". That is where the cities name originally comes from... "Antwerpen".
great video about great city.i think antwerp is underated city which in many ways doesnt fall from the best belgian cities like bruges, ghent and brusells
Wow. SO tragic what they did to the Vleeshuisbuurt in the '70s. I think that's why I will always prefer Ghent over Antwerp in this regard. They really gutted what would have been the most atmospheric part of the city.
Not bad, but missed several monuments you just passed by... chapel across from St Jans Plein, beautiful lace store on Wapper, just to name 2. Haven't watched any further.
Ten eerste ploeg een ploeg in Deurne, niet int stad. Ten tweede alle echte Antwerpenaars zullen beamen dat BEERSCHOT de ploeg van't stad is (meeste titels, meeste internationals, gelegen in het stad, etc.)
Beautiful city.But... No one can tell me - what does the Belgian flag look like?))) Красивый город. Но... Никто мне не подскажет - как выглядит бельгийский флаг?)))
The belgians have obviously a very special humor. The word Antwerp coms from "throwing a hand" and in the middle of the city is a monument where a giant is throwing a cut off hand. King Leopold managed to torture between 1888 an 1908 millions of people - the main method was to cut their hands off. He also killed about 12 Million people in the Colony Congo - and in Belgium there is no Museum about it and no rememberance day. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atrocities_in_the_Congo_Free_State
What a dumb, uneducated comment. The "throwing a hand" story comes from the legend of Brabo who cut off the hand of the giant Antigoon and so 'saved the city'. This legend dates long before Leopold even existed, so this whole 'hand'-story has NOTHING to do with Congo. I know lots of fake news stories are circulating on social media linking Antwerp (chocolate) hands to the atrocities in Congo... Absolutely ridiculous. About Leopold's (a German, btw) Congo: this was at a time when Flanders was very poor and also oppressed by the same French-speaking Belgians who 'ruled' Congo. Flanders had nothing to do with it. And one last thing: there IS a giant museum about Africa/congo/colonial history in Tervuren, just outside Brussels. www.africamuseum.be
The name of the city is much older than the events in the Congo. And people just keep hammering on the Belgian story while some of the other colonizing countries did much worse and for much longer.
Leopold did not kill 12 million. According to recent demographic research, a decline of 1.2 million happened, due to a combimation of death due to disease, hunger and violence, but also non death reasons like emigratiom amd lowered fertility
