An alternative hold down, it uses a slight spring in it to wedge itself in the hardy hole. #GaryHuston #Blacksmithing #Farrier #ASMR #Horseshoeing #Fabrication #Ironwork #Hoofcare #welder #repairs #horse #farriery #engineering
Gary, I really like your videos and the format in which they are presented. You focus on the work at hand & explain your reasoning for the material & tools used. Direct and to the point. Thanks for your videos!
gave a go at making one today ,,turned out great looks and fuction went to quench it droped it in the tank forgot about it got it out then tried to use it lost all my spring got to damn hard lol had to make another thanks for videos keep them coming
It is a pleasure to watch someone who KNOWS forging, not back yard want to bees. I have made several of these. I make mine to fit the pritchel, use stock just smaller than your hole. Bend the top just past 90 to about 95 to 100 deg. make the corner square then a S bend to the face of the anvil. Harden the sq bend for spring and enjoy. The sq corner is easy to hammer down on then a tap on the standing leg to loosen. Ask a dozen smiths how to do something and get two dozen ways that will work!
Awesome and simple holdfast. I have been meaning to make a set for my woodworking bench and had thought of using the massive roubo style but this seems alot easier then have to upset the corner for that style. Peter ross made one on the woodwright workshop. I think the shear weight of the hold fast would set itself withouta hammer strike. Great video
Wow what a great concept! We have recently started a gas forge(we have some videos on our channel if anyone is interested) and this will be a great addition to our tools. Thanks for the tutorial Gary!!
Me and a friend yesterday made a rams head like you did in one of your videos. It was the first time for me to make something like that, and my friend hadn't even forged ever. It turned out surprisingly nice! But early that day I made a hold down like yours. I got two of them already when I bought my anvil, but they always seem to jump out of the hole, so I made one like in your video, but again, same problem. It seems so easy just one knock and it's stuck, but it doesn't, what am I doing wrong?
I tried this out with half inch square, holds tight but doesn't come out as easily as yours does. I'll try it again with 3/4 inch round. I'd like to see how to make some tongs.
@@garyhuston At my age, I'm wise enough not to try moving that on my own ..... fortunately my son is 22 stone of gristle, bit like a 2 legged forklift. We are both used to dealing with heavy objects and we had no problem moving and setting up my 450 lb anvil. Levers, wood blocks and a bit of forethought and canny thinking involved
@@garyhuston Same here - works a treat. Just bought a Brooks 1 1/4 cwt and surprised to see a 1 1/4" hardy and a 1/2" pritchel. The hardy suits ma as all my current tools fit, but the pritchel seems a bit too small for a decent holdfast. I really do like the extra thickness Brooks allow for the heel. Most others seem a bit light in this area.
Or if you have it already installed or you're not able to build a base like that, the best thing you can do to silence it is put a magnet (the ones in the back of speakers for example) in the horn of the anvil, it's amazing. I have a 68 kg anvil and it was like a bell, with this I can barely hear it.
