Have you heard of MUMMERING?
This is my ALL TIME FAVOURITE Newfoundland tradition! I still can’t believe it when people tell me they’ve never heard of it because it is SUCH a big part of our culture and traditions. Some of my best memories come from the spontaneous parties that happen when the mummers would appear on our door step. I am SO EXCITED to share this part of my life with you and to explain why it is the best holiday tradition!
What are your favourite Holiday traditions? Let me know in the comments!

The people I know from Newfoundland told me it was becoming a tradition of the past. You've made me realize what a wonderful part of growing up this must've been, I laughed until I started to cry....

Here we stand before your door, as we did the year before. Give us whiskey, give us gin. Open the door and let us in! Happy New Year from the GREAT fighting city of Philadelphia

My sister and I decided one night during Christmas (back in the late 80’s) to get dressed up and go mummering to our neighbours across the street. We dressed up in crazy clothes and had our faces covered, no way they would know who we were. We exited our house out the back door, across the back garden and came from a different direction up our street so no one would see us leave out the front door and know who we were. We climbed the front steps to their front door and banged on the door. Missus answers the door and without skipping a beat nonchalantly says “Hi Kelly and Christina”! Took the wind right out of our sails! The shortest time mummering ever!

My family is a newfie family. I wish they could have brought the tradition down here to Alberta. I've never actually been to Newfoundland personally though.

My Dad used to buy 2 bottles of Bartons Reserve Irish Whiskey for the "Mummers" each year. My Mother would "LLOW" the Mummers into the hold/home Christmas which we were sure to decorate in Irish fashion and we would be sure to welcome them in a very warm fashion. There was never a drop of the whiskey left after the excitement was over! And that was Christmas in the Cotton homestead.

Hi! I live in the states, my grandparents were from Newfoundland. I, like you, love this tradition! Every year, I beg my daughters to do it with me....we will eventually! I did go to a Newfoundland party here in the US a few years ago and we "mummered". It was way too much fun! Thanks for this video!

A Gaelic pagan tradition that survived through Christianity. Usually practiced over the 12 days of Christmas.

Not Gaelic and not pagan. Originated in England - the Mummers Plays - and not recorded before the early 1700's.

For an American, this practice is positively terrifying! Not long ago, you'd have a bunch of men showing up your house with pillow cases over their heads but they'd have guns, noose, flaming crosses, and other implements of torture. FUN!
