Sweaty is an insult, but it can be applied to people who are both objectively good at a game or those who are just trying too hard and end up acting in ways that show direct animosity to the person making the insult. An example of the former is someone who doesn’t go easy on newbies to a game because they’re trying to exert dominance. Anya doesn’t seem to be aware that it’s actually not used as a compliment. I’m guessing it’s because it’s always used sarcastically in collabs.

I've seen it used very objectively and not as an insult. It usually just means someone who is trying very hard.

I mean it can be used as a snarky backhanded compliment, like when back in one of the _Lethal Company_ collabs Kaela explained how she was going to try the technique for grabbing a beehive and Biboo promptly declared it "actual sweaty gamer strats".

@@Micheldied it depends on context If they are fighting Malenia for hours them being sweaty is justified. If they are playing a casual match with Friends and getting too intense? The bad kind of sweaty I mean for the most part if one was actually good at a game they would never get sweaty.

@@ZalYagunRyai exactly, it can be used in different contexts, and not always have a bad connotation. I don't agree that people who are good can't be sweaty, though. Pro players in plenty of games get sweaty even in pubs.

Anya definitely explained that wrong. You don't use it for people who're good at the game. You use it for people who try way harder than they should. Like playing a casual game and going balls to the walls, even being toxic about losing.

Nah I've heard of the term sweaty/sweats before as a genuine description of ppl. Us casuals only hear about the word in a negative way most of the time. Either Anya filtered the translation or she's only aware of the positive description, because there's no way with how combative she is that she has no idea what context it's usually used in. 😂

@@OxygenC2”sweaty tryhards” are used together for a reason. It’s an easy one to look up too. Having sweats after a good match is a totally separate thing and Anya definitely missed the context that the others are bringing up.

I wonder if it's confounded by the fact that generally Japanese people sweat tends to not stink on average because of genetics, and thus it does not have the same stinky connotation.
