I'm a first year gardener and I miss labled my broccoli and kale and have been pruning my plants from the bottom to harvest the leaves.lol. as a result my plants are over 2 feet tall and are just forming heads. It'll be interesting to see what yeild I get. Lol. Always learning and making mistakes!
Please, due an updated video on broccoli 🥦. I am learning so much from you. I wish I could afford to join. You really are an awesome gardener. ❤❤❤ love your videos. Keep them coming.
Thanks for this great info. I grew broccili for the first time this winter. I wasn't sure what was going to happen because I live on the beach in Fort Morgan, Alabama on the Gulf of Mexico. I thought the salt in the air might have a negative effect but they grew perfectly. I also eat the leaves. Will be using your tips next year. Now I'm growing tomatoes, peppers and okra, everything in containers and is growing well so far. Hope the hurricanes pass us up this year. Love your channel.
This is my first year trying to grow brocolli, and I am so excited! But I had no idea even how it grew out of the plants, or how or when to harvest 🤣so thank you so much for your video!
I grew it once last year. After you cut the main head 4 more heads sprout out. They won't be as big as the main one but they will still be decent size. Once you cut those, 8 even smaller heads will grow. This was my experience. I didn't use anything in them and they came out perfect. Only issue I had was the earwigs liked hanging out in then so I had to clean them out. My 3 yr old watched me at the time and ever since he inspects any vegetables he's given. He thinks there's bugs living in then lol
I live in the San Francisco Bay Area which is zone 9B. On Dec 8 I seeded 5 Broccoli and put them in a grow box that I built. I am going to try and grow them through the winter in a raised bed. I am also going to try and grow snap peas and carrots in containers. We will see how well this turns out and if we get a frost I will cover with plastic sheeting and form a mini greenhouse.
Been working on my moms garden with her this summer.. We heard about a thing called "banding" the broccoli/cauliflower and I was just wondering, in all the videos i've watched so far, not too many of them mention banding, or at what stage of growth etc... Any info would be great as I don't want to spoil the broccoli from growing proper. Thank you for this great video!
Romanesco broccoli was a fail for me this year. I was so excited to see that you had a video on the topic. I love your energy and enthusiasm. Your videos are always informative, as well as being entertaining.
I'm a 1st timer at growing broccoli. I haven't fed it anything but water. I am on a serious budget so what would you reccomend I give it? Preferably organic.
You need to feed it to get good growth! If you are really pinching pennies you can fertilize with your own pee (diluted 10 to 1, and don't store pee it as it turns into ammonia within a few hours). Fish emulsion or manure is better, as pee can deposit salt if used a lot over time.
Here in Central Texas, we plant brassicas in the fall. It gets too hot too fast here so they bolt quickly in the spring, even in partial shade unless you get a very early start
I love your gardening videos!!! One thing I would to know is ow do you keep black flies off and from eating your broccoli and cauliflower and brussels sprout plants?
We live in the south and are limited to Fall planting for Kale, broccoli, cabbage because the white moth covers it if we plant in the Spring. Best juice Fall Kale, best potato broccoli soup and wood fire pizza. Italian sausage, broccoli tips, red onion, mushroom and pesto and cheese. Ahhh.
im pretty sure migardener said its not the heat necessarily but a rapid warm up that will cause them to bolt so if your spring is short waiting until it heats up a bit might work better to prevent bolting.
I just found your channel, I like that I'm getting tips from someone who is also in NJ! Then I don't have to worry about difference in climate. I just started broccoli in peat pods today, I think I'm a little late on it but I do what I can with 2 little babies running around here.. I'm going to get them in the ground as soon as I can and use your tips!
Last April 2022, we had 2 consecutive days in the 90's. All my lettuce, Broccoli, Radishes, ect bolted. I got small Broccoli heads. Interestingly, the lettuce was sweet and tender, and lasted a long time, till July. I'm in Hartsdale NY. (by White Plains). Did you have any problems?
I had broccoli growing this year first time. What do you do with plant after you harvested? Im still growing mine cuz im limited on room & want to grow more this season. Great video thank you.Bless you.Shalom Shabatt.. Peace be still.
Can I prune as it grows ? Would that hurt it ? I have a small garden but find I can put plants closer together if I prune them as they grow and get pretty good harvest that way . I’m trying broccoli this year and looking for the best harvest tips .
Hi James! I love seeing the progression in your garden! It’s becoming so beautiful.🌳🌱🥦😍 I have a question… How long did it take your grapes to grow tall enough so they grow on the top of the arbor? I just planted some this year and I have an arbor over my terrace which is pretty high. I think it’s a bit higher than yours.🍇🍇🍇🍇😋
THANK YOU for these tips. I’m originally a south Jersey girl but have lived in Phoenix for past 15 years. We plant broccoli in the fall here to harvest around Dec/Jan. This is my first year trying it in my own garden and your tips are great.
These are some excellent tips for growing broccoli. I did not try to grow any this year but I definitely might try some later in the summer. Thanks for sharing.
Good Morning, thank you for presentation...I just came out of my garden. should we cut the broccoli leaves for bigger broccoli, or how to get bigger broccoli heads?
Thanks Man. I'll have to wait till late summer to plant my broccoli. I missed the first planting in our area. After watching your video I'm a lot more confident in planting broccoli. Last here mine went to flower Early
Thank you for the information but what I want to know is how long will it take until you start to see broccoli heads form. Also how often should we water broccoli to grow the fastest way.
Thanks so much, such good advice. For some reason I do fine with broccoli that I buy from the greenhouse but I have never ever had any success with my own starts. With your tips in mind...I won’t give up. I’ll soldier on. There is always Fall!!
I had a cottontail get into my garden and it ate most of the leaves off my broccoli and some of my Brussel sprouts, I have marigolds from seed coming up but not fast enough obviously
Hey JAMES..... what do you use to prevent the BROCCOLI LEAVES from being eating and left with holes in the big four or five main leaves ???? do you spray soap and anti fungi ?
I use an organic spray called BT there is a link for it in the description. I talk about it in detail in a video titled "how to control pests in your garden" 😁
Awesome video, one thing you didn't mention but you probably already know, is broccoli leaves are delicious and edible, broccoli leaves are full of vitamins and great any salad better than lettuce, rocket leaves broccoli greens are so delicious and then make a shiny Green in your bowl of salad or plate of salad so mention broccoli leaves are edible so keep the plant year-round my broccoli produced in the spring and survive through the summer and groom or shoots in the fall all the way till the end of November and October shoots are coming out even till December cuz broccoli likes cold weather they started being more productive after the summer!
We grew broccoli first time last year. Baker creek heirloom seed. We ended up harvesting mostly leaves and flowers. We made some mistakes but it was so delectable with a bit of bacon fat. Aloha from Pittsburgh 🌈😃🤙
I know Im randomly asking but does anybody know a method to get back into an Instagram account? I stupidly lost my password. I appreciate any tips you can give me
@Levi Sam I really appreciate your reply. I found the site on google and Im in the hacking process now. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Mine always flower first is this normal? Last year grew them when too hot n thought that's what did it but this year planted early n still flowered first. How do I prevent this or do they still get heads later on? Broccoli n cauliflower are only ones I have promlem with.
my brocolli plants are beginning to wilt. I have brussel sprout straw berries onions and cabbage everything is going well except for my brocolli. any tips on why this might be happening?
How do you cut them out and when you do it that the plant finished or will you get more growing on it? Can you do more on premature flowering please as I am not sure if mines are still ok as some have flowered thanks
Hi I love your channel! I'm also doing Back to Eden style gardening and am looking into growing Romanesco Italia broccoli. I heard that there are certain things to do in order to get the heads to form if grown in an area that gets harsh winters (I'm growing in Michigan). As you are also growing in a colder climate, and back to eden style, I was wondering if you've ever grown that type of broccoli and if you have do you have any advice on how to get it to form a head? Thank You!!
I think this one comes with experience and research. I'm here on the Oregon coast where there's not enough heat to fully ripen some fruits. Banana slugs(The Enemy), new compost problems, and too much watering as well as too much moisture. Keep growing, in all ways. The plants will let you know they need something, then it's up to you to provide.
not just a broccoli head and broccoli shoots are edible but also the leaves people remember you can use the broccoli leaves and salads and they're delicious better than lettuce!
I planted broccoli seeds indoors. I got only a few hairlike shoots. 15 days gone and I see no improvement. What should I do? It appears to be a total failure
I started mine the other day which is probably too early for the fall crop. But who knows with this Michigan weather. We really didn't even get a spring, it went from winter to summer. Maybe we'll end up with a mild summer and nice fall weather.
I live in a town house in Hawaii and i'm sure it's not getting enough sun but it's been growing for 3 months without producing anything yet. Its growing kinda tall about 2ft now. What should I do to have it start producing? Temperatures been between 59 to 79f
I direct sow my seeds. My broccoli has bolted when the heads are only about two inches across...two years in a row! I don't know why it's bolting. I live in Northern Michigan and the summers get around 90 and I was told it was because of the heat...should I give the sun cover when the heads begin to form?? I don't know what else to do! Please help!
Interesting. You might be onto something. I think the wood chips absorb water like a sponge and create an environment that is undesirable to mosquitos. It seems like it to me after converting all my lawn to wood chips :-)
My experience has been the same. The more wood chips I add to my yard, the less we see mosquitoes. And thank goodness for that because there are TONS here and they love my blood. :)
Hi James. Thanks for all the great info. I'm having issues with my braccusses (sp) this Fall. Do you have an idea what's causing the leaves to yellow and fall off? Thanks
Im in jersey in newark the projects and im having all types of problems with my broccoli they just keep bolting or flowering it been 2 years no harvest just flowering
The OmniscientOG of The Internet , I inoculated my small mulched section of my garden with the wonderful psilocybe cubensis. It ran like forest gump! there my favorite to have around
