This is probably the most concise, most informative "tips and tricks for broccoli" video I've watched. Easily digestible. Thank you so much for all the information and for presenting it so well.

I am in Melbourne, Australia. For the past few years, I have grown broccoli the following way. I plant small seedlings (starters) in mid-summer, while the soil and weather are still warm. I cover the raised bed with a fitted cover of shade cloth - 70% UV reduction, The sides of the shade cloth cover meet the ground surrounding the raised bed. I peg the shade cloth to the ground so no moths can get underneath. At that time of the year, they are everywhere here so it's vital to exclude them. the plants grow away happily under the shade cloth until winter comes, then they slow down, and by June/July (mid-winter), they have produced large heads like the ones shown in this video. At that stage, the cover is propped up on stakes and there aren't any moths around to make holes in leaves, lay eggs etc. The broccoli heads appear randomly and as soon as they reach a good size, I harvest them and cook them as part of the evening meal. I only grow a bed of nine broccoli plants so there is not enough to freeze. After cutting off the main heads, the side shoots produce the smaller broccoli as shown in this video. I harvest those when I want to add broccoli to a dish for dinner. At that point, I pull out the plant and make stock from the plant stems and freeze to add to soups and casseroles for added nutrition. I use home-made compost to grow the broccoli and mulch with organic sugar cane mulch. I water most days with a drip system and/or garden hose. The raised bed cover net stops rain and pollution falling directly on the broccoli. Some rain drips through the net but not enough to damage the plants.

Someone else mentioned using the tough stems. I use the thick stump part in stir fries. First peel off the tough outer layers then slice to desired shape and size. I have also used it shredded in my coleslaw.

I lived in the desert in California. My first year of growing brocolli and cauliflower, I seeded both in late May/early June, not realizing they were cool season veggies. By October I had beautiful plants, but not one head of broccoli or cauliflower. The rest of my garden was finished producing. I had planted at least 25 broccoli and 25 cauliflower plants, and I was really disappointed that there was no harvest. I abandoned my garden for the year. I went out to my garden area in late December, and much to my surprise, I had a huge crop of broccolli. But still, no cauliflower, just beautiful plants.

Excellent advice and instructions!!! First year here growing edibles in SC, USA; son grew two beautiful and large heads of broccoli in a big planter on our back deck (deer can’t reach). Absolutely delicious! Looking forward to his growing more edibles! Thank you!

I planted 20 plants and woodchucks ate them the same day. I went and bought more and put up a chicken wire fence then planted 25 plants. 2 days later the chucks got in and ate them also. So I guess they like them better than me.

I'm a dairy extension in Thailand, and I'm about to have my own land outside Bangkok. I wish to have a small livestock farm and a small garden for planting some vegetables. I'm so excited for that!
