The smash hit musical comedy, ANYTHING GOES sets sail for the Princess Theatre Melbourne from May 2015 - Filmed by James Terry and Michael Wilson Edited by James Terry
Everyone here bitching about the set and her age are hilarious. First of all Ethel Merman (the original Reno for Christ's sake) played Reno a second time well into her upper 40's. Secondly this is basically an homage to the original 1934 production where the set was basically this. Chill out. Not everything has to be done the way Broadway does it now. Caroline O'Connor is legendary.
I of course had Sutton Foster's Reno in my mind before seeing the Aussie version in Sydney. At first I was a bit shocked seeing Reno depicted as a slightly older woman, but I think it actually really worked with the storyline. Caroline was an absolute hoot - she had fantastic comedic timing, amazing chemistry with all the male characters particularly Todd and she had brilliant vocals. Never having seen her in anything before, I went in with no preconceptions about her abilities but she was fantastic. Maybe the cast worked out any issues in Brisbane or Melbourne because everything was seamless at the Sydney show and the cast brought an amazing energy and rocked the house. It was as good as anything I've seen in London's West End.
This tap is MUCH more authentic to the style of the 30's. sorry Suttonites (and yes she was brilliant). But this is brilliant in its own way. Reno is an evangelist nightclub singer who is supposed to be a little passed her prime so the ageism presented within the comments doesn't really fit. I have directed and choreographed this show many times and I love this take on it. Caroline O'Conner is brilliant as a hoofer from the 30's. The style is dead on.
I saw the opening night in Brisbane at the QPAC last night. I don't know why there is so much negativity in the comments here. I have had over 30 years in musical theatre in London, Copenhagen, Hong Kong and Australia and I must say this production was fabulous. OK, Caroline might not have been an ideal Reno, but the rest of the cast is superb. The choreography is fun, lively and enthusiastic, the set is great (why should it have to be a monotone colour like other productions!!??), the costumes are outstanding, very much in the period, the orchestra sounds terrific and the lighting is crisp and gives the show so much personality. I could not find any faults in what I saw and heard and would recommend others to go and see for themselves. Practically the whole audience were on their feet for a standing ovation at the end and my group of friends also thoroughly enjoyed it. Well done, everyone!
Omg I was sitting at the back watching this at the Sydney Opera House and before watching this video I absolutely did not know that she was slightly older than what I thought she was!! From her voice and dancing she seemed so young! So surprised that she completely fooled me, well done. 😊
My 11 year old and I saw this on the weekend, and at first I was a little underwhelmed with the first act. However, near the end of Act 1 (where this moment is from) and all of Act 2, this production really came into its own. It was brilliant and my daughter loved it.
Oh, and my dear misskikikat: Mary Martin was 48 when she played the 20-something Maria in "The Sound Of Music". Did she look completely ridiculous? No, she made theatre history.
Bloody brilliant! I was in the chorus of our College production of "Anything Goes" back in the day, and have loved this show ever since. I wish I could have seen this production, it looks top notch. <3
I don’t understand why people keep dissing this and comparing it to others. It was amazing in its own way and her age has nothing to do with it really, she can dance like no ones business and she can also sing. I absolutely adore Sutton’s and Ethel’s performances but it’s unfair to compare them, they are different people and different productions ❤️❤️
