My goodness. The pitching, the phrasing and diction, the use of her air in multiple ways (vibrato, on-spot colocation of the notes, singing long sentences); the 4 minute, beautifully-executed dance, yet more immediate great singing for another 30 seconds like she just hadn´t done a hell of a dancing, just to end it all with a final 10 seconds high, sustained, belted note.... Thats what I call condition!!! This woman is extraordinary!!!
4:07 - Sailor Boy bends down to pick up a very dangerous something from the floor. This is an example of pure professionalism. Didn't miss a beat. Bravo!
Drew Messmann I have watched this countless times and I haven’t picked that up until. It really shows how well these actors can play little mistakes off.
When they go from the straight lines to the diagonals, that's why I love the theater. Every time I see that it puts a grin on my face. So simple and yet it's perfectly executed.
I don't care what you say - none of those Broadway divas could dance for four solid minutes and then end the song belting in perfect straight tone. She is The Triple Threat of Broadway.
I prefer this version, though recorded illegally, to the one at the Tony's. It's more complete and thrilling with the various dance groupings and the entire song. Ms. Sutton Foster and cast are incredible!
I hate that people are constantly comparing Sutton in this role to Patti Lupone. Both are BRILLIANT performers, and both play the role so different that I honestly don't think that it does either justice to compare
@@ShonaBlumeneau it’s the same role but completely different styles Pattis was focused on her incredible voice and not so much her dancing And Sutton’s was focused on her voice and and dancing Both women are incredible and did way more than was expected of them They were just asked to do different things so I don’t really think it’s fair to judge when their songs look completely different I prefer Sutton’s but in no way is it better than pattis just like how pattis isn’t better than Sutton’s They are just so different
@@1amSam Sutton's breath control is incredible - those long phrases all done in one breath - also at the end after several minutes of energetic dancing. I've never heard any other singer show similar control!
What I love about this, is that the individual moves aren't really that hard. There are hard moves here and there, but what's show stopping about it isn't the moves themselves. It's the incredible timing, formations and noise of the things. It shows that sometimes simple is best. Being in time is more important and more impressive than being able to do 50 wings in a row.
I was lucky enough to see this in NYC. The show is a trifle, but getting to see Sutton perform this number and Blow, Gabriel Blow were worth the price of admission. She was truly outstanding! Someone please write another “triple threat” part for her, for that is when she truly shines!
@JoanBette: Anyone that has to use Joan Crawford and Bette Davis as their RU-vid is boring, infantile, asinine and a trifle, but not a dessert. It’s a fun musical that epitomizes the 1930 musicals and I wish the original Reno, Ethel Merman, had won the Tony.
what an amazing world we live in, such vibrant production exists with lively instrumentals and world class singers. foster has dedicated her life to performing, just to exist within this space being able to experience such an amazing rendition is a blessing. how anyone can not be filled with joy i dont understand. have a good day everyone❤
Saw it in previews. Easily Sutton's greatest performance and thought the show was wonderful...probably one of the best revivals ever and far better than the 1987 production.
Saw this live and honestly the rest of the show is so dated but when this number ended the entire theater erupted and my jaded gay heart sang with glee!!!
I had to the amazing fortune to come out from CA and see Miss Foster's final performance! It was amazing! It was actually perfection. She got a standing ovation four times throughout the show! I did NOT leave dissapointed! :) Sutton IS Broadway :)
Saw this in December, had goose bumps this whole song... mind was literally blown that after that whole tap part, she went into that note at the end. ugh love it
The Performing Arts Library at Lincoln Center films every production during the run of the original cast. They can ily be seen by qualified researchers with letters from their department. I did research there when I was stung my graduate thesis at NYUs Tisch School of the Arts.
I was lucky enough to see this production with this cast. I am not a big fan of this musical in general. But this number. My God. As you can tell from this video, it was jaw-droppingly amazing. So fun to see it again!
I know, I was THERE. I was there in '60's too- that was REAL quality and Sutton's skills take me back to that golden time. I love Porter's lyrics & with Patti LuPone good diction is not always a component. Certainly dance ( my area of focus) never was. Couldn't find your "quality" comment to respond to, sorry.
It doesn't make sense when people say 'this person could outsing this person.. this person is better than this person'... Sutton and Patti have different styles and different voices. They are both true talents!
lucky!!! i wanted to see her last performance but i did have the luck to see her on her last week. she was incredible and omg i was blown away by her performance.
vincentvangogodancer there is a vid like that with Johnathan Groff in one of his performances he stares at a camera for a good 10 seconds and it makes you feel really guilty for watching the video 😂😂
as someone playing the part of Billy in an upcoming performence of "Anything Goes" I would love to have the oppertunity to act alongside Ms Foster as she is without a doubt a Delightful, a Delicious, a Delectable honour to watch perform. ove you Sutton keep up the amazing work!
Wow-what you missed ! You will NEVER comprehend your loss. Saw it twice- wish Sutton & original cast was back so I could see it again. It's gonna be awhile before she's back on Broadway.
I wish i had seen it with Sutton. I saw it yesterday, and it was amazing, Joel Grey was great (as expected) and Tari as Reno was great. I was surprised not to see Stephanie J Block (seeing as she took over). But it was still FANTASTIC. i would love to see it again.
Funny how 14 dislikes only appeared after one poster started spamming negative and ludicrous comments. Sutton has no ear? !! She uses vibrato when appropriate and when she straight tones, she is right on pitch. And, her phrasing is perfect. Love how they come to performances they dislike and post again and again.
They already did, back in the 50's- different script, some changes in music, orchestrations different, etc. They have presented so many different stagings of this and because it's such a great piece, they're all unique ( pretty good considering it's 79 years old).
There's also a 1936 filming with Ethel Merman, which isn't exactly a thrill - but it at least (mostly) follows the plot and score of the original. The 1950's version is ... well, I'll say it -- just Hollywood ruining another Broadway musical.
She is not "flat," her straight tones are spot on pitch and add variety to judicious use of vibrato, instead of a continuous bray. And, this rendition also includes an ending verse not used in '87. Every other verse is there along with the extended tap number that stopped the show every night.
Lighten up ! And this will probably be all you have to enjoy from Ms. Foster on Broadway for a LONG time. She won't be back here for quite awhile if her new show is as good as it looks like it's gonna be. So we all have to suffer now.
Patti LuPone has given the best (according to my opinion) singing performance of this play, that i believe no one has given so far! But the truth is that Foster is an extremely good professional, she has a very very good voice, extremely good dancing skills, she is young, fresh, full of positive vibes ... in general she is a pro that will give great performances!
they should do a movie from this musical so that the performers can actually rest after each number! i don't know how the hell they do it, it's unbelievable...
I am not embarrassed to say (well, maybe a little LOL) that when I saw the play, I couldn't take my eyes off him any time he was on stage. The tuxedo number itself was worth the price of admission.
I think Sutton was a better Reno than Patti because I like the tone of her voice better, her sense of comedic timing is lightyears better than Patti's over-acting in my opinion, she can enunciate unlike Patti, doesn't overuse her vibrato which gives the song variety, leaving the singers out there wondering when she'll use it again, she is a dancer unlike Patti, and out of the two I'd say her voice fits the musical style of this shoe better. Patti's voice would be great for something like Sweeny Todd (again, she overacted and the accent was horrible) but Sutton rules this production. And for those people saying Sutton isn't as legendary as Patti - She has the same amount of Tony's in a shorter amount of time, unlike Patti she CAN do everything, and she's had some shows written with her in mind (Shrek, for example) too.
I don't think it's fair to compare them both because that's like comparing Tommy Tune to Bob Fosse lol (not that I have anything against Tommy) but I think both Patti and Sutton are amazing on their unique way and again i don't think it's fair to compare them.
SIMPLY DIVOON...now..we know Sutton SINGS....but holy cow!...to dance the ENTIRE number is some kind of FABULOUS.....none of the others EVER do or cant do...but SUTTON DO!!!....Lupone has a thrilling voice..but yes....SUTTON THO.IS THE WHOOOOLE PACKAGE....brilliantly choreographed.....
Didn't see her perform it on stage, but saw her television version of Anything Goes from the 1950s. I wish I could have seen Ethel Merman perform live.
I wish I had gotten a chance to see her. Unfortunatley, I am about 1000 miles from NYC so that is nearly impossible. I only get up to NYC every few years. I actually made it up just a few weeks ago, but since Sutton wasn't in it anymore, I decided not too see it. The ones I did see were Wicked, Porgy and Bess, Sister Act, Spider-Man, and Avenue Q (Off-Broadway).
@turkeypopcorn Series sold, Sutton was finished with her last matinee on March 11, and SJB took over on or around March 15. Check the Roundabout site. Series will be on ABCFamily and is filming now.
