➤➤Transcript (partial):
There’s this idea in Jungian psychology called the circumambulation. Jung had this idea that you had a potential future Self, which would be, in potential, everything that you could be. It manifests itself moment to moment in your present life by making you interested in things. The things that you’re interested in are the things that would guide you along the path, and lead you to maximal development.
It sounds like a metaphysical idea-or a mystical idea, even. But it’s not. It’s really a profoundly biological idea. The idea is something like, ‘well, you’re set up so that you’re automatically interested in those things that would fully expand you as a well-adapted creature.’ There’s nothing radical about that idea. What else could possibly be the case? Unless there’s something fundamentally flawed about you, that is what the situation would be. It’s kind of interesting to think about how that would be manifest moment to moment, but the idea is something like, ‘well, your interest is captured by those things that lead you down the path of development.’ Well, that better be the case.
Ok, so that’s fine. There’s some utility in pursuing those things that you’re interested in-that’s the call to adventure, let’s say. The call to adventure takes you all sorts of places. The problem with the call to adventure is, what the hell do you know? You might be interested in things that are kind of warped and bent. Often it’s the case that, when new parts of the people manifest themselves-and grip their interests, say-they do it very badly and shoddily. So you stumble around like an idiot, when you try to do something new. That’s why the fool is the precursor to the saviour, from the symbolic perspective: you have to be a fool before you can be a master, and if you’re not willing to be a fool, you can’t be a master.
It’s an error-ridden process, and that’s also laid out in the Old Testament stories. The first thing that happens to all these patriarchal figures-when God kicks them out of their father’s house, when they’re like 84-is that they run into all sorts of trouble. Some of it’s social, some of it’s natural, and some of it’s a consequence of their own moral inadequacy. So they’re fools. But the thing that’s so interesting is that, despite the fact that their fools, they’re still supposed to go on the adventure, and they’re capable of learning enough-as a consequence of moving forward on the adventure-that they straighten themselves out across time. It’s something like that.
The circumambulation that Jung talked about was this continual circling, in some sense, of who you could be. You might notice, for example, that there are themes in your life. When you go back across your experiences, you kind of have your typical experience, that sort of repeats itself. There might be variation on it, like a musical theme, but you’re circling yourself, and getting closer to yourself, as you move across time. That’s the circumambulation. Remember that for a second, because we’ll go back to it.

@@inhouseadmin9192 Everyone starts out innocent and full of potential. During these moments of naive purity, we pursue our goals with a clear mind, and strong convictions with little to no distractions. As we grow older, lige circumstances affect us more often, and with more intensity. We come into contact with more people and scenarios that challenge us, stress us, distract us, traumatize us, change our way of thinking. Thes we become scared, distrustful, hurt, bitter, etc etc. The longer we live, and the more people we interact with, the more exposed to distractions we become. But if we overcome all of those, we will eventually reach a form of enlightenment. It might even be necessary to have overcome all those distractions and challenges to reach enlightment.

As a perfectionist this hit home hard. It prevents me from attempting anything I know I'm not fully capable of completing without fault. That may be fine in the workplace (most of the time) but in social situations where failure is a given it just arrests any kind of emotional development. I'm a 13 year old in the shape of an adult. Being a perfectionist in life is NOT a good thing.
@robertjones811

After working on my imperfect perfectionism for six decades I may have some insight. ** Sometimes it's actually fear. The way to overcome fear is to do it, Peterson says so too. Despite plenty of dating rejections and disappointments I am God-blessed with my wife of 35 years. **attainable excellence is excellence nonetheless. I got good grades at a state college. I was a pilot but not a fighter pilot. I've f'ed up at times but also averted a crash and saved lives. **A reputation as a slow computer programmer but also told: "I don't care because the quality is so good." **Learn to cook a couple of things well. I make a darn good Ruben sandwich and chocolate chip cookie. **It's always easier when you let yourself have fun doing it. **Small victories are very satisfying and motivating.

Fear has a funny way of impressing us with things we don't appreciate. It makes monsters out of ordinary people and animals. It builds mountains out of mole hills. I've yet to try something I was afraid of trying and not find it considerably less painful than I'd expected. More often, I've found a hidden appreciation for the thing I was afraid of trying. At the very least, I've found (or cultivated) a dutiful respect for the other people who do the thing I was afraid to try. Perfectionism... tends more to be an excuse. Of course you're going to screw it up before you get really good at it. BUT it's not going to screw itself up either so you can just start out good at it. AND just for the record, I've hidden behind "perfectionism" too. It's a human frailty. We often rationalize when we shouldn't. We're often lazy out of the abject horror of wrecking an otherwise stellar(?) reputation... but is that reputation so stellar? Probably not. At the very least, it's probably not as stellar as we like to think. We are (after all) usually the engineers of our own disasters. BUT if we don't put in the practice, we can't get "good" at anything. ;o)

knowledge that perfection is impossible to reach does not mean failure is guaranteed, everything is flawed in the world, true perfection does not exist, the idea of perfection itself is a human construct created by society so that we always have something to aspire to be, our idea of perfection constantly changes when we reach what we previously thought to be perfect, but be aware that there's no such thing as mastering something completely, acknowledging that your knowledge no matter how much you have, is just a drop in the bucket compared to what the world offers is the key to acquiring more knowledge, because if you believe you've mastered something you're ignoring the fountain of knowledge that awaits you, all you have to do is go after it

It's hard work to articulate things
@pdb2223
@pdb2223 3 года назад
Well, Nass, you articulated quite well, I think, Dr. Peterson's striving to develop his thinking and individuated, nuanced speech. He oftentimes utilizes his public communications (and tactful showmanship, indeed!), to avoid overintellectualizing, thereby bypassing alienating eager individuals, while at once incorporating that which may be, across all cultural, moral, and ethical boundaries readily identifiable through emotionally-based, extremely potent explanations and point of view; these viewpoints extoll explanations, I think, remain wholly or near-entirely neglected by academics. Many academics like Dr. Peterson without, I easily admit, any personal knowledge or awareness thereof said types -- are probably, and understandably, unwilling to meet those who've not necessarily 'earned' or 'pay for' access to what Peterson, in contrast, has become over the years, and is becoming even still; A, as you first said Nass, "his own man." Well said. Very well stated, I think! Warmest regards to you and thank you for your input. If you feel, you will inevitably think, evidenced by your statements above, so finding the words will become easier and easier once you delve more and more into point-counterpoint, various (mystical, or non-mystical) paradoxes, linguistics, mathematical modeling, etc. Really: Anything you wish to engage in. I wish you the best of luck, which I do genuinely mean! I hope you have a good day, Nass, and I really appreciate your thought-provoking exclamations abovestated regarding Dr. Peterson. Your expressive honesty and highly perceptive abilities, which you most probably maintain all the time, will serve you well; so why not others, too?

Sadly, I didn’t figure his out until I was in my mid 40’s. I wish I had a Jordan Peterson when I was a kid. If you’re young right now, LISTEN TO THIS GUY. He’s got a good heart, and he’s super smart. He’s saying what’s right, and you don’t hear that much these days, especially on RU-vid or Twitter.

All the running away from myself just brought me back. Ite been so interesting responding to life differently. Not trying to control, its taken away alot stress. Accountability has shown me what i need to work on. Its aided in healing all the way back to childhood. We can not move forward until we heal different versions of ourselves and truly accept where we are.

What this guy is saying is more important than you think. There is a deeply embeded fear of failure that is holding back a lot of people nowadays. In reality, this fear of failure is because we perceive huge negative consequences in failure because of the way we were raised and the faulty values we learned in childhood. In reality, we have to let ourselves fail, like, really, nothing bad is gonna happen 99% of the time is this pursuit. Let yourself fail so you can move forward, become completely okay with it instead of living a life of pretenses. It is such a relief and eventually you will get what you want.

Think of this metaphor- "The kingdom of God is withing you." Think deeper than the religious connotation. Think of the true best whole self being revealed from deep within you. Think of the idea of needing to be "born again" coming from deep within you. (This is the stuff that seems to make sense to me.) Peterson is has a mind that gets it in on so many levels. Most of us are asleep and do not know it.

This is so... GENIUS. I cannot believe it. Especially the last part. I have watched a looot of JP clips including this one. But then you forget about them and then return here when you feel completely lost again and fall in old patterns. So the last few weeks I've been thinking about what I'm doing wrong and I ignore the JP clips in my feed, because "I already watched them so apparently they don't work". But then I click anyway and then I get my answer in those last couple of minutes; THE FACT THAT YOU'RE FULL OF FAULTS DOESN'T MEAN YOU HAVE TO STOP. AND IT DOESN'T MEAN YOU CAN'T LEARN.!! I have to remember that in fact I'll most likely fail often and horribly in the beginning especially.

I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that Dr. Peterson has one of the most important minds of the last 100 years. There may be smarter people, but certainly no smarter people actively using their intelligence to try and help people be their best selves. We don't need the newest cellphone, fastest car, or any of the things society tells us we need. We just need to understand ourselves. I've been a soldier for the last decade and I've lived my adult life with this phrase in mind: "If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle." I've spent years learning my strengths and weaknesses as they pertain to the battlefield and trying to mold myself into a more effective soldier. As I became a better soldier, I found my personal relationships in ruins because I never spent any time learning who I was as a man, only as a soldier. Things are still rough, but now I have hope.
