Products provided by AOC
This is an actual, real life, ready-to-buy, Mini LED gaming monitor! It’s honestly incredible, it’s vibrant and blindingly bright, remarkably fast and responsive, but it’s unusable for me. This is the AOC AG274QXM, a 1440p 170Hz IPS gaming monitor with a Mini LED backlight, adaptive sync, HDR1000, 10 bit colour, and a £1000 price tag - and a few key flaws that I just cannot understand why they are here. Let me explain.

I’m sick of seeing 1ms display BS by PR departments ….. they’ll start using terms as: - turn off your monitor and call it “Low Power Mode”, - Oversaturated colours are “Vibrant” gamer effects, - a monitor stand will be renamed as an “ergonomic stand” that increases productivity etc - 2w speakers as a “Awesome immersion soundbar” 🤦‍♀🤦🤦‍♂💩💩💩💩💩💩

Edit: I have the monitor for 1.5 months now. I use it for office and gaming (10h per day) and have no issues at all with the high frequency PWM backlight. The power adapter is quite huge, but it doesn't make any noise at all. Overall a really really good monitor! HDR is just amazing (apart from a little "afterglow" of moving bringt elements on dark background). --- Both my Galaxy S22 and my previous S10 have OLED screens that use PWM at a much lower frequency (240Hz). I never recognized any issues with that. I didnt even notice it was there. How are the chances i also dont have any problems with that screen which even "flickers" at a MUCH higher rate (which should even be less noticeable?)? I read that it strongly depends on the user if its a problem or not. I mean, AOC certainly has had a lot of testers on that screen. I cannot believe this is a common issue for a lot of people.

It could be purely psychological, he saw on the colorometer that its PWM and suddenly went "OH MY GOD!!! IT USES PWM? THIS IS COMPLETELY UNUSABLE" yknow guys like that exist allover the net... Realistically speaking, 720+hz is a requirement and 1440hz is pretty much Flicker Free. 5760hz would be in Eye Care level
@GeordiLaForgery

Sounds like it's using PWM (pulse width modulation) for the backlight which is common on TV's. A good PC monitor should use DC (direct current) for flicker free backlight.
@chubbysumo2230
@chubbysumo2230 2 года назад
The fact that it's adding in a white frame and a black frame, tells me that it's using the same type of driver as a TV. Sounds like they wanted to be the first to Market with a mini LED monitor, and instead of making custom boards for it, they used the same board that would be driving a much larger living room TV. If you look at reviews of mini LED TVs on the market, headaches and eye strain are a very common issue with them, because they all use pwm backlight modulation. It makes me wonder if mini LEDs can use DC voltage variation to change their brightness, or if they have to use pwm, because for some reason they can't do DC voltage variation? Ewm is just telling the light to pulse on or off, and always at full brightness.
@GeordiLaForgery
@GeordiLaForgery 2 года назад
@@chubbysumo2230 I think it should be possible with mini-led but it's so expensive to implement that manufacturers won't bother for the time being. I would never use a PC monitor unless it's flicker free certified, I've tried using a sony tv as a monitor in the past and got headaches and strained eyes.
@GSBarlev
@GSBarlev 2 года назад
If it's intentional PWM dimming then they cheaped out--to be "flicker free" usually requires PWM dimming to strobe in the 10 kHz range, not 1 kHz.

@TechteamGB Update 22 April 2023 - AOC did later release a firmware update to speed up the backlight operation and also help reduce haloing further although we’ve not had chance to re-test that. there is notice on tftcentral website about aoc releasing the firmware to fix it guess but i can't be sure i don't have it and surely doubtful to do so with this issue
@dynastes4938
@dynastes4938 2 года назад
Sounds to me like the monitor is employing PWM as a method of dimming the backlight. Most modern LCDs refrain from this, but that one obviously does not. Have you tested whether the flickering seizes at a setting of 100 % brightness? Often times it will with this sort of technique being used. Not saying that this would make the display any more usable, SDR brightness will probably be way too high for comfortable use at maximum value. Anyway, a firmware update cannot correct this issue (at least not to my knowledge), since the method of dimming the backlight is determined on a hardware level (and has nothing to do with local dimming in particular, but with the implementation of the backlight unit as a whole - shame on the AOC official for talking nonsense). Everyone sensitive to flicker will therefore not be wanting to buy this monitor, though it has to be said that not everyone notices PWM-based backlight regulation when the pulsing frequency is sufficiently high.
@GSBarlev
@GSBarlev 2 года назад
PWM dimming *can* be fine, but not at 1kHz. I build my own soft boxes and "false window" light panels (using the optical layers and metal casings from broken TVs), and I almost always use PWM dimming because it's more power efficient and better for the LEDs. But the frequency for those is 10kHz+. And that's just for static illumination!

@or1on89
@or1on89 2 года назад
I read from TFT Central that AOC was going to address the odd PWM behaviour with a firmware update. It would be interesting to investigate and see if they deliver on this front. It's a shame for the locked sRGB mode though, this makes this monitor not suitable for colour critical work. This is something they could address as well.

this monitor has an unusual drawback, some have mentioned flickering with a seemingly large PWM, so I figured out the problem - the connectors that have been in the warehouse for many years need to be cleaned with an alcohol wipe and a piece of a plastic card, the result will be very pleased!

Funny how in the olden days CRT monitors set to low refresh rates say like 60 hz were bad and many of us could see the flicker and just couldn't take it, but image blur was not an issue. And then LCD monitors came out and the nature of the display meant that there was no flicker at 60 hz but there was a ton of blur as the pixels couldn't transition fast enough to avoid it. And with this AOC LED monitor we are back to the annoying flicker of low refresh rate CRT monitors. Now that's irony.
@josipreponj1928
@josipreponj1928 2 года назад
Now you get both flicker and blur. And that is with any intentionally or non-intentionally strobed LCD. Plus the crosstalk :D. Advanced technology they say.
@dynastes4938
@dynastes4938 2 года назад
Well, actually PWM dimming, as a method for brightness regulation and as obviously employed here, was very common with LCD display for a very long time. In recent years manufacturers have stepped away from this method and the marketing term of "flickerfree displays" has become popular. So no, the switch to LCDs did not get rid of that issue outright. That being said, a modern monitor should not use PWM dimming anymore.
@josipreponj1928
@josipreponj1928 2 года назад
@@dynastes4938 Agreed! Brightness should never be controlled with pulse length but pulse height. If this really is caused by PWM I don't know why they chose to go that direction because there is no real reason to, I hope. Usually at maximum brightness setting there should be no flickering. He must of tested this with something bellow max. But still, this is a big no for 2022 display, especially at that price point. In my opinion LCDs need to go. They will, soon. Its just a matter of time.

For my Predator Helios 500 (AMD 2700/Vega 56), and it does pull up to 300W (and the battery alone cannot sustain the system under heavy loads - gta v maxed out runs great, unplug it and it throttles to about 5fps for about 10 seconds and then dies). Hi, I bought this monitor recently and I actually like it, I am sure no one will ever notice that flickering. There's actually one thing which is almost a dealbreaker and it's DIFFERENT in your video, When in HDR mode, the backlight never goes completely off, it's like 1-2% on at least, so the perfect black just isn't there. I get it, I do, it's an IPS and the native contrast isn't just good enough. Was the monitor in the video capable of fully switching the LED in HDR blacks or my monitor is doing it weird?

@@jonathaningram8157 i pretty much understand you, I've changed a few oled tvs because of the DSE and tinting people around me just didn't notice and didn't take it seriously. But considering that flicker, it's 1920hz, and that number is just so high, it's practically unnoticeable. I mean, flagship Samsung Tvs all flicker on 960hz, which is twice worse, and no one cares. This reviewer simply heard the word "flicker", got scared, measured it himself, and got scared second time by the numbers he measured.
