Hey Spirit of the Law, one of the campaign designers on the Forgotten Empires team here again. Here's a little trivia that most fans don't notice. The Portuguese also have an older 'draft' Wonder in the rotations of the Palace object. This is also a Belem Tower, but an earlier rendition of it that looks more primitive, with wooden plank roofs and less ornate designs. Why do these older Wonder versions appear in the Palace object? Would you believe it is because of a 12th century Spanish cathedral? For the first scenario of the Almeida campaign, I wanted to approximate the Zamora Cathedral, a Romanesque church. Because of the cathedral's dome and arches, it looks very vaguely like the Byzantine Wonder if you squint and look sideways. The problem of course is that putting the Byzantines in a scenario set in 15th century Spain didn't make any sense so the workaround was to create a single building that contained all Wonders. At the time, the African Kingdoms' Wonders were not yet completed so the old versions went into the Palace object. As you can imagine, the team goes through many different ideas during the design process and many never make the final release. Go figure that a 12th century Spanish cathedral would be the only reason why the Sankore Madrasah and the Bet Giyorgis made it into the game!

throwing axemen exist because the developers found out about the francisca, which is a type of a throwing axe the franks and other germanic people used during the early middle ages, "dramaticized" it and gave them to a unit

Chu Ko Nu exist in real history as well, but it's a pretty weak crossbow that can shoot like only 20 meters far. It's good as a weapon against unarmored peasants army probably. In Chinese TV shows I've seen several attempts by people to reconstruct it. It is possible to make the draw power to be stronger, but the reloading will take much more effort as well, to the point that it just become like a regular crossbow and no longer "repeating". It's a trade-off. As long as you make the reloading lever easy to pull by hand, it has to be weak.

The Slavs should have the Dormition cathedral in Vladimir as the wonder. It's a 13th/14th century building, firstly, and is basically a bigger version of the Slav monastery building. Super pretty. Gorgeous.

Agi Hammerthief You're doing the same mistake. Poland was a MINOR nation compared to Grand Duchy of *Lithuania.* Same goes for Commonwealth that wasn't _just_ Poland. It is nowadays that poles use propaganda to claim all the past glory and territories as if they were polish only.

It is so weird that we are called Magyars in the game. Only a handful of languages use it, most use some version of Hungarian.
@alnoso
@alnoso Год назад
It is a bit weird, and I'm 3 years late to reply, but I think the devs wanted to distance civs from their modern equivalents by name wherever possible. That's why we have "Franks" instead of "French", "Britons" instead of "British/English", etc. Only civs from the game that still exist today and are named by their modern name don't really have a convincing alternative to name them, like in the case of Spanish, Italians, Portuguese, etc., all of these don't really have another word you can call them. With Hungarians, in English at least, you can just say Magyars and it sounds like you're reffering to the times before Austro-Hungary.

Being a scholar of russian traditional wood architecture restoration myself I can assure you that the story about a man throwing his axe into a lake/river nearby is present almost on every "bigger" or beautiful ancient wooden structure in Russia. So don't pay it to much attention besides if the story is present you can be sure that it was "one of the best" available in time and certain period. Also from my experience it's simply impossible to build such a huge structure like Kizhi alone. The wooden roof tiles (called "Lemekh") alone will take him so much time that when he finishes the roof on one end he should have been replacing the first ones on the other already due to becoming to old ^^
