Dr. Eric Roselli, Chief of Adult Cardiac Surgery, and Dr. Lars Svensson, Chairman of the Sydell and Arnold Miller Family Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute, talk about aortic valve disease and options for treatment, including types of surgery (aortic valve repair and aortic valve replacement with mechanical or biologic valves), as well as different approaches to aortic valve surgery (transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), minimally invasive heart surgery and traditional incisions). It is important to choose the best surgery for the individual patient.

My dad has a mechanical valve, made me curious because I love watching surgery’s. My dad has had 3-4 heard surgery’s, the original was to get a pig valve. Then 1 week later the doctors took him back under because it was too small for my dad “he’s 6’7”. They got him a bigger pig valve, but that one wasn’t working right either, so they took him back again to get a mechanical valve. This happened when I was about 5, the only thing I remember is staying at a babysitters for a week or so. But when my dad came home, I noticed he had a ticking sound. I fell asleep to sound of that tick for years. There more, when I was in the 6th grade, my dad also had a ruptured aneurysm near his gull bladder, didn’t have it resolved until hours later. Keep in mind that he is 57 years old, 6’7, has had much physical stress, and he’s on BLOODTHINNERS. This man had a 1% chance of survival and that’s not even a dramatized number. This is all hereditary aswell, his mother dropped dead on the kitchen floor while cooking lunch, sudden, unexpected, and unexplained. My dad remebers it well, he was 14 and was sitting in the living room. He remebers his mom humming in the kitchen, he called for her and asked for some water. A little bit later she stopped humming and he heard a thud. All of his brothers were home (3 of them who all have heart conditions and aneurysms aswell), they tried doing CPR while screaming for their dad who happened to be in the bathroom. My dad has had such a chaotic life, and It doesn’t even stop there. Remember the aneurysm? Well my uncle is a physical therapist and insisted on treating my dad instead of some therapy place when he was released from the hospital. Me and my mom knew he wasn’t right, we noticed there was something off with him when we would call but my uncle didn’t listen. He made my dad do so much physical activity that 2 weeks later he was back in the hospital. This time he had an infection in his gull bladder because there was more blood than the doctors knew was there. The stress on his body made it start to shut down, he ended up having his gull bladder removed. He had gotten an scan for check ups this year and the “fluid that your body will absorb” was still there. He’s alive and kicking, he has a 2 year old, 12 year old, me (15), and my moms other 3 kids. He’s like a cat with 9 lives, I have no idea how he’s even alive right now. Well yeah that’s why I watched this video. FYI when I was in sixth grade I was living in Florida with my mom and brother while my dad and his bothers were in indiana. We were planning on moving down here full time, so we left my dad in Indiana to finish up his work contract and sell our house so he could come up the following summer. After all of the medical bills we couldn’t afford a house so we stayed in Indiana until August 2019. Bought a house in September with our saved money, and been here ever since.

i am 20, and was told since birth that i would need one of these procedures by the time i was 8 or 9, then again by 12 or 13, again by 16-17, and so on; yet everything has continued to be stable. i'm very lucky in that regard. some day i will need one of these procedures, and i am very nervous, but you give me confidence that everything will be okay.

I had my aortic valve done in May, I got a mechanical, an on-x one. Yes the warfarin sucks but now I have the at home testing so it’s easier. I eat what I want and they adjust my dose of it changes. Every day it gets easier but I can do more, I don’t feel like I’m gasping for air anymore just moving. I was terrified and avoided it for 2 years but it feels good to be on the other side of it-I’m mad at myself for allowing my fear to stall it.

I've had a bicuspid aortic valve all my life and have been closely monitored over the years with only moderate regurg that hadn't changed, but 41 now and was told this week that maybe in a year, year and half, looking to get AVR. I'm hoping for bioprostetic and small incisions made.

Dr Sano at UCSF does something called the “Ozaki procedure” he did an incredible job this week on my 15 yr old grandson. Repaired the extremely infected valve and made a 3 leaf bicuspid with heart tissue. ❤️❤️❤️ He also created the Sano shunt.

My husband and I research online. We asked his normal cardiologist question such as what was the likely hood of having to have a pig valve or metal or if they were able to use his own. We asked what we’re the risks. One if the cardiologist told us that the valve procedures is the most common and easiest of the heart surgery’s. My grandson was on a picc line prior to the surgery with antibiotics iv in a ball that he kept in his pocket 3 weeks prior to the surgery and a week after which we worked with at home each night. The Surgery DR Sano was amazing at explaining, answering questions and checking on him. He had his surgery 12/26/19 and is doing so good. We came home 1/2/20. Please feel free to text me at 916-505-2477 I can answer some more questions if you have them.
