That's Pritty dang cool right there. I allways wondered what I would do to have backup power in an apartment. Wished I thaught of this 25yrs ago before I was married with kids when I lived in an apartment. Now I live in the country and own a 9400watt portable generator. I am a prepper and my son is also and he's getting ready to move out for the first time and he'll probably live in an apartment. I'll have to show him this video. Thanks for sharing much appreciated

Nice little set up. I have something like that as well. I had a 120ah/60ah usable AGM battery with 200w of solar going to a 30a Epever mppt charge controller and a 1000w pure sine inverter. Now it has a 100ah lithium battery instead. But we use this for camping and power outages. We also have a second 12v system that helps run things in our house. This has 1400w of solar going to 2 mppt charge controllers. 400ah of lithium batteries and a 1000w inverter. Lights. Fridge and standing freezer. TV, Xbox, Internet, vacuum cleaner, slow cooker, fans, ECT. It has been running steady 24/7 for the last 3 years. No not steady with everything attached. We run more in the summer than in the winter. Helps cut down on our electric bill some. But not enough to offset our bill. It works and I'm happy with what I've built. Hopefully your utilizing yours more as well

having these comes in handy. i have a few of them through out my home and started adding solar panels as a means to recharge them. im still working on that part. hopefully i will have that done this year. my main goal is to set my office up on solar and be off grid. im build a couple smaller versions to take to the lake and im going to be playing with solar charging on them as well.

Your batteries are not in serie but in parallel. In serie, you will get 24volts instead of 12volts and your power inverter will blow up :)

Love the solution. We live in an area that is prone to the odd power outage. They can be anything from a couple of hours to a full day I just finished a little back-up battery machine as prototype with AC and DC power out. As long as we're careful a single 100Ah battery and a 500W inverter provides us with light, lets us watch TV, work on the computers, with internet and will keep the refrigerators going. Where we are we don't have a lot of choice with regard to containers so MK1 is open plan with a big battery on a hand cart and a wooden panel with all the HMI on it. Mk2, which will be used for the grandkids will be a little more contained.

Good stuff. AGM batteries in place of lead/acid would be safer, longer-lasting and leak proof. I left a new one fully charged in my motorcycle in a cold garage for an entire Canadian winter and come spring it had lost _only five percent_ of its charge. I currently have a new one in my Can Am Spyder which is about to be stored in the same circumstances. They are more expensive but not prohibitively so and they are mil-spec and can be oriented any which way, flat, on end, upside down, whatever. I like the tote box arrangement and I'll probably use it for my apartment emergency power backup. Your cat has great camouflage. Close eyes and disappear. 😸 Thanks for the video.

Let me guess from the gas off right?? it does not produce enough gas to do shit. If it did the water would basically boil out anytime you used it. So whomever put that thought in your head.. take it out and trash it. Not to mention the VELOCITY of the gas escaping would basically escape that container and move into the atmosphere so fast a spark could not catch it.

Is that wall outlet a dedicated circuit for running the battery back up ? Because those who don’t want you doing this uses words like Back-feeding
@Pseudo-Geek
@Pseudo-Geek 2 года назад
Backfeeding is when you are trying to power the house by jerry-rigging something to put power INTO the wall outlet. That has nothing whatsoever to do with what he's doing. He's just plugging his battery charger into the wall outlet to charge his batteries.
@fredjones43

What I am tired of, is listening to this repeated add for solar panels. They arelying through their teeth saying you "erase your utility bill" when in fact they will not install a system on your house that will not leave you paying PGE a monthly fee and of course, the $150.00-200.00 per month for the solar panels, while the lender takes the tax credit. I am guessing it is as good a deal as when Verizon finances a new phone with “no interest”, then charges you an “additional” $20.00/month line charge which equals 480.00 over the life of the two year contract. This detail they will hide and in truth lie through their teeth about. When you review the payments you are making before and after, you can see it. When you go ask them why? Did my bill not come down or why? Has it gone up so much (more than promised) they will say anything except that “we are not charging you interest, but we are charging you 480.00 fee for the financing”. This equates to about a %50 “.fee”

With that inverter. Can you run it for long hours ? Say you had a small tv of 50 to 80w. Could you run it for 6hours or 10hours if the battery held. Or would the inverter overheat ?

can it charge itself? like power converter to battery charger and back to the battery?
@jtderby
@jtderby 2 года назад
Wasn't sure if this was meant in jest. In theory you can power the charger off the inverter which is getting power from the batteries but at best it would just cycle the power in a loop. In reality, the issue you have is losses in the conversion from DC to AC back to DC so you'll expend more energy to power the charger than the charger can put into the battery eventually depleting the batteries.

I think in an extended power outage it would make more sense to get a cooler and put any essentials in there with ice instead of wasting precious portable power on a full size refrigerator. As long as you keep the refrigerator closed during a short power outage the contents will be fine.

You should be drawing power and recharging from both batteries. In other words, hook up positive to battery no. 1 and negative to battery no. 2. This will keep the charge on both batteries equal.
@steelspurRRT
@steelspurRRT 3 года назад
That would not make the electrons flow any differently into or out of the batteries. The charger only senses the total voltage/amps to determine charge. The way he has his connections will drain/charge identically to your suggestion. You could connect the charger and load leads half way in between the batteries and it won't make a difference. The load doesn't sense anything it just draws what it needs and each battery will give what it can in either configuration. There are always stronger and weaker batteries in every battery bank. Two identically made batteries will vary even if only slightly. To accomplish what you are suggesting you need a system that will charge the batteries independently to make sure they get fully charged. The drain will take care of itself. Doing it this way will also help identify a battery that is faulty and needs to be replaced. For this gentleman's application such equipment would be a waste as he can just use a voltmeter for routine diagnostics.
@rpbajb
@rpbajb 3 года назад
@@steelspurRRT I think your explanation is incorrect. If the charging current is applied to battery 1, it must flow through two cables and two clamps to reach battery 2. Those conductors and connections have resistance, causing a lower voltage on battery 2. The charger will stop the charge when the battery 1 is full, and battery 2 will be undercharged. The batteries will then equalize to each other, resulting in an incomplete charge in both batteries. When discharging, battery 1 will discharge first and battery 2 will discharge last. This is not good for the life of a battery bank.
@steelspurRRT
@steelspurRRT 3 года назад
@@rpbajb sorry you can't understand how it works. Any resistance in the cables is negligible and would not accomplish what you are implying no matter how much resistance is present. Higher resistance only causes more energy loss due heat. Electricity flows through the path of least resistance. The cables are much less resistant than the batteries so it comes down to the batteries. If batt A is more resistant than batt B the cable between them is not enough to stop more electrons from flowing to batt B no matter which of the two configurations is used. Nor will it prevent the stronger of the two batteries from diacharging electrons first (until it becomes even with the other batt) when the system is in use. Neither configuration is going to cause/prevent one of the batteries being over/under used/maintained. Again, you need more equipment to accomplish what you are worrying about. But as I said your method will work the same as this gentleman's so you will be just fine with yours as he is with his. And of your method makes you feel better that's a bonus for you. The man has a great little system here. The fact that something like this is the only thing someone would choose to comment on should be taken by him as a compliment. 🙂

@@rpbajb I have maintained batteries for the military and civilian companies. The info in your video links is just people taking advantage of folks' lack of education and understanding of how batteries work to make themselves sound like they "know more than you". To obtain a balanced charge you HAVE to monitor EACH battery in a system and control the charges INDEPENDENTLY. If you want to really get technical, how about monitoring the battery temperature while charging and adjusting the charge accordingly? I know because I have been there and done that as my equipment performed that function as well. The method in your links will give a false sense of security and will NOT warn you when a battery is going bad. A problem that, if not detected, will cause damage the other battery/batteries in the system by overcharging the good batteries when the bad battery no longer takes the charge it should. This problem is prevented from occurring prematurely and easily detected when it eventually does happen by using the procedure I am talking about. Believe what you will and do what makes you feel good. But if this process didn't save money the companies I have worked for would NOT have invested big bucks for the equipment to set it up that way. If the method you are touting really ensured a balanced charge they would have saved that money and just hooked it up your way. I will leave you alone now. When someone has their mind made up, often times they don't want to be confused by facts.
