Apartment Hack: Hacking Intercom for No-Key Door

This is a simple way to unlock your outside security door with no key! Pressing your apartment buzzer will unlock the door.Please note that this is not a very secure system, adding more circuitry to create a 'password' of Morse code would greatly improve security. I do not suggest anyone to violate their lease agreement. Please use this video as an instructional application of simple circuits.

Should have set it up to where you have to enter a code (pressing your apt# a certain number of times) to unlock it, otherwise now anyone can press your button and unlock it......

+brandon simmons yes, if they happened to buzz your number... but a lot of those doors suck pretty bad to begin with... aka a flat head screw driver or a key jammed between the door and frame can get you in anyway

bleeding the speaker voltage to activate a relay (in turn operating the door switch) wouldn't work?

Off topic...what brand of intercom is this? The make is covered by your thumb in the close-up. This is the exact model from Monica's apartment in Friends and I'm looking to duplicate her apartment door set-up for my wife!

cut the speaker wire, or add a resistor inline with the speaker wire to reduce the volume. you would have to experiment with resistor value.

If there is a talk button then I doubt anyone could listen in without that button pressed. But I can not say for sure.

Thanks for sharing. Your buzzer looks like mine. I'm looking for a way to open the outside door with a cell phone call by using the GSM switch, but I don't know what the buzzer diagram look like. Can you guide me where to find the diagram? Thanks.

Im not sure about the diagram. Pressing the door button by hand or with a relay should simply complete the circuit.

+Patrick P use a raspberry pi. have his speaker > diode > cap > resistor > transistor set up trigger the pi to send an email. google sms to email gateway [provider name]... im with VZW and its xxx-xxx-xxx@vtext.com. have the relay part (to switch the door) triggered by an email from your phone. there is an api for gmail, and if you use gmail on your phone the gmail to gmail send time should be almost instant. create a account that the pi can check every 30 seconds or so. if you wanted to get really fancy you could even have the pi send audio back that says please wait.
