Pretty sure the rainbow painted on the flat in Hougang has nothing to do with LGBT rights. The houses there were built around the 1980s and since they're government houses, you can be pretty sure it's not pro-LGBT.
Rainbow is just colour. If you see a kid draw a sky with rainbow, you will think she is fighting for lgbt rights? Beside it’s a apartment not a landed house.
Not sure why the rainbow was painted on the HDB flats. But it definitely isn't for pro-LGBTQ rights. It was probably painted because the guy/lady in charge thought it was cute/pretty.
welcome to hougang! it's been my home for as long as I remember. 27 years to be exact! You can visit the only remaining kampung (village) houses in singapore, right here in hougang. It's tucked in lorong buangkok about 10 minutes from where I live haha

If you don’t mind living in the north area, you can try finding a place to stay in sembawang or woodlands. We have nice parks and amenities are just a short distance away from wherever you are staying

Theres another hdb block that has a sunrise/sunset painting. not sure if its still there but its near where u explored. blk 25 hougang ave 3. look it up on google maps theres a picture of it too
The tunnel is actually a place where they set up Pasar Malam stalls at residential areas.You should come to Hougang and Sengkang more often as it is quiet and nice
The rainbow has been there since 20 plus years ago. After the first rainbow was painted there, I think the residents there just decided it look nice and keep refreshing it over the years until it kind of become an icon there.. Want to introduce you to the Church of Nativity of Blessed Virgin Mary near the rainbow hdb.. It's also another iconic building in Hougang and it's a very beautiful Catholic Church built I think more than 100 years ago. Do check it out =)

Hey georgia welcome to hougang! You were literally at my neighbourhood and i think i would be so shook if i were to see you hanging there. And no the rainbow doesnt represent lgbt, but it was part of HDB's plan to give different estate a unique flavour back in the 80's.

I think for your exploration photo shoot I can recommend Singapore's LAST surviving kampong village @ Buangkok...which is near Sengkang. I think I heard the residents there are very friendly and open unlike most HDB dwellers. Do check it out with your friends and Justin!! Just google map for "7 Lorong Buangkok"
That rainbow is version 3 or 4 (i think) since 1980s. Every time the town council does repainting work for our estate, the rainbow design will change a little and this is the best version i seen so far. Why is the water green you asked? That's because of the algae in the water and it gets greener during sunny days. Btw, that's part of our Punggol Serangoon Reservoir and there's a cycling track where you can cycle from Hougang > SengKang > Punggol, vice versa.
Oh ya the rainbow does not have any relation to LGBT. If you walk northwest to blk 25, the block there will have a sunset/sunrise painted on it. These are how the 2 iconic blocks are painted for the past few decades.

I believe that in Hokkien, it's pronounced as au-gang like au-buey (En: at the back/ behind). In Mandarin, the "h" is not silent but it's not an "ow" diphthong either. It's "hou". So the people who pronounce it "how-gang" are combining the Hokkien and Mandarin pronunciations. That's just my 2 cents worth.
There are a lot of ways to pronounce it, Hougang is the Romanised version of Aū-káng, a Hokkien and Teochew name meaning "river end". If you want to be objectively speaking, then you should pronounce it in the Hokkien. You can pronounce Hòu Găng in mandarin, Hougang in Malay, Hāukang in Tamil. This is multiculturalism.
