I was there for the failed demolition of Montgomery and Churchill House, what a long day. They were built by Matthews & Mumby using their M2 system of precast prestressed concrete, using 5 storey high columns then 3 storey columns above to add height 3 storeys at a time. It's pretty sad they missed the steel pipes that were used to locate the columns when they are clearly visible in a construction photo. The 5 storey columns were used to create maisonettes at the bases of nearby sister towers Vine and Willow house, though they were demolished in the 90s and replaced with conventional housing.

09:05 those are rebars. Even a concrete column in a 2 storey building would have it, the demolition engineer seriously thought a 16 storey column was just concrete ?

Some buildings are overbuild, e.g. has 2 times more rebar than needed, because of e.g. expected very high wind load.

Pardon my ignorance, but wouldn't the dedicated road without the guiderails work just as fine for the buses ? It's a steerable bus afterall.

the rails mean the driver doesn’t have to steer at all, and enables them to go faster

learn from mistakes from the past? when will that start?

For those two buildings, that the buildings were so difficult to take down shows that demolition waa a waste of buildings that had years of useful life left in terms of structure. Horrible for the environment.

Why didn't they use a high reach in the first place ?

It doesn't show anything, but your agenda. In higher latitudes it can become very cold, and thus also in the UK. The standard for insulation of houses at that time wasn't great. That can easily make the heating bill about the same as the rent bill during very cold winters. Moreover, the structural integrity of those highrises could be doubtful during strong winds. That had been the case in Denmark for a few highrises from about the same build year.

Armoring of the blades of wind turbines has a precedent - the laminated wood propellors of early airplanes commonly had sheet metal covering the leading edges.

The town of Picher, all the shareholders in the mining company got rich, and behold when it's not worth anything anymore, just flee the site!! Typical US style of profiting and leave the cleanup bill to others!!

Few arabs + aircraft-grade aluminium + some diesel + hour training… and these sibling-buildings would been down in 4 hours.
