CARBON FIBER RINGER PERFORMANCE, SPECS, AND CONSTRUCTION SPECS:
Small: 9′ Long, 24″ wide, 13″ tall, 22 pounds- Paddler Weight Range- 100-180
Medium: 9′ long, 25″ wide, 13.5″ tall, 23 Pounds- Paddler Weight Range- 140-220
Large: 9’5″ long, 26″ wide, 14.5″ tall, 29 pounds- Paddler Weight Range- 180-260
"Let me start off with the obvious- Dead weight hurts a boat’s performance. The lighter the boat is the better it performs and the more enjoyable the overall experience." - EJ
Performance of the Ringer:
Performance related to the construction:
Clearly the #1 reason for making an advanced composites kayak is to reduce the total weight by nearly 1/2 for a freestyle kayak. The following is what you’ll experience:
Picking up, carrying, loading, and unloading become WAY easier and more enjoyable. You’ll be spoiled quickly, however.
Every stroke has way more effect on moving the boat. Turning, accelerating, and doing river running moves, squirts, etc. takes way less effort, and happens with way more snappiness with the same effort.
You’ll be faster.
The number 2 reason for composite freestyle boats is the stiffness. A stiff hull transfers the waters energy into the boat without it flexing and dampening the effect like a plastic boat. Peel-outs, ferries, surfing, landing drops, etc. are all higher performing in a composite boat.
Performance related to the design of the Ringer:
The Ringer has several uses. First, it is an Extreme Slalom (Boatercross) Racing Kayak design. While the carbon fiber version isn’t allowed in ICF Races, it can be raced in many local and regional events in downriver, boater cross, and creek races. The speed of this 9’ boat is off the charts in whitewater. Here are a few reasons for that:
Speed:
The Rocker profile creates maximum acceleration when 45ing, to boofing drops of all sizes. This includes slides.
No kayak paddles “drier” over waves and holes with the ample bow rocker, wide bow, planing hull bow (widest flattest bow hull available).
The slicey squirting stern creates a low drag “pivot turn” or “Squirt Turn” experience and it doesn’t slide out on outside edge turns.
The boat carves can carries its speed on the inside edge for turns/upstreams like no other.
The lightweight accelerates and turns much faster than the plastic boats that are 2 times the weight.
Surfing:
The Ringer has the fastest and loosest hull of any 1/2 slice on a wave. Combine that with the lightweight of this boat and you’ll have a boat that you can round house and spin on waves that other many other 1/2 slices won’t even surf. No compromise on the performance of the hull for looseness. 100% high performance planing hull from end to end. So, front surf, spin around and back surf, spin back to front, grind it sideways, and do freestyle on big waves.
Squirting:
The low volume stern can be squirted vertically in flatwater, or on eddy lines. It is low enough volume to stern stall and be stable. The ample surface area in the stern assures a very stable stern squirt that makes it easier to stay vertical and pirouette.
Down River- Creeking:
In many ways the Ringer is easier than a creek boat for downriver. Easier to turn, boof, ferry, etc.. the only challenge is the squirtable stern. If you are good at squirting and are used to putting the stern to use in maneuvering, and not “catching your edge” a lot, you’ll find downriver to be confidence inspiring, even on the harder stuff. If you are just learning your edges, you’ll love the Ringer on your home runs, or water that isn’t over your skill level. This boat is amazing at keeping the bow up on shallow drops and not petoning. However, the stern rocker is less than most creek boats so runs with a lot of “Stern tap” potential will find you stern tapping more than your creek boat.

About effing time! 71 yr old here, tired of lugging my 45 lb Alpha around, and taking it off my jeep at the river, ugh don’t get me started. Came up in the 70’s, a time when the only whitewater kayaks that existed were fiberglass. Been looking at carbon slalom boats lately, but haven’t loved ´em enough to pull the trigger. Price tag for for Ringer might be high, but like EJ says in his write-up, « mountain bikes are like $10,000 these days ». Besides what do I care, I’m retired. Not gonna live forever, and this seems like the answer I’ve been waiting for. Thanks for putting this out there. Cheers from Santa Fe.😢

That’s awesome you’re still out shredding in your 70s I hope I’m still going when that age and glad helped you out I think this is exactly what you might be needing. I agree high end mountain bikes and road bikes are crazy expensive

EJ should flow you one for the winter. Durability test. See how it would actually hold up on Cheoah and tellico laps. I bet it would be fine. We both know guys who run ocoee in ten year old squirt boats. A solid lay up boat can take some big hits. Price wise, it costs what two kayaks cost. Most boaters who would be interested in something like that probably have at least 5 kayaks in the garage. So sell 3 and get a custom boat.

@powhoundus

If you think about it most folks are pretty abusive towards their boats and then get pissed off when they finally break. I’m talking “need” to boof vs “want” to boof every rock they see. Ditto rock spins, shore slide put ins, etc. I started boating in early 80’s with a Phoenix Ocoee so started out with mindset rocks are to be missed, not played with. I’m thinking if you didn’t abuse the boat, and boofed only when needed it would actually hold up pretty well to a lot of creeking type runs including the Cheoah. You can get down the Cheoah pretty easily with minimal rock contact and have a fun in the process. Thinking the same thing re: Ocoee and maybe Tellico at 500 and above. Russell Fork definitely at 800 plus. Upper Yough at higher flows but not sure about Summer 2.0-2.1 flows?

I’m glad to finally see an unbiased party review of this boat. If EJ wants to sell a lot of these, he should be getting it out to more reviewers and set up demo days at the water parks like you are doing there. We all know he’s great, but we’re also not going to take his word on a boat that costs over 3K! I take that back, he’s sold a few based on his word alone which is a real head scratcher for me. I love your reviews - keep up the good work. 1. How would this boat rate in the half slice shootout you did last year? Can you give us numbers in each category like you did the other boats? 2. Is the seat glued in? Seems to me the way to set this up when you first get it / or for EJ any demo boat would be to glue big Velcro tracks to the bottom of the boat and the bottom / side braces of the seat so folks can easily adjust / experiment with seat position. Can’t imagine what a PITA it would be to try to dial in that seat if it’s glued in. Hope to see ya at the Ocoee race this weekend!
@WadeHarrison
@WadeHarrison 8 месяцев назад
Tough to compare because its carbon and very different. I hope he does this in Plastic actually and not the seat was not glued in. I am pretty sure you have the option for them to find you perfect spot and outfit it for you. Still my top half Slice so far Is this one coloradokayak.com/products/pyranha-ripper-2-kayak?ref=wade

Nice. I bet that thing is fun. I’m nervous to take my beat up Rewind on concrete, can’t imagine a $3k carbon boat hitting those super whirlpooling eddies and scraping the tail. I saw you say in your other video that the concrete there is smoother or more polished (I assume compared to Charlotte which has a lot of texture). Does that help with the boat damage? Money no object, I’d buy one for sure. 23 lbs sounds awesome

Looks as good as it's going to get for a boat that isn't remotely trimmed right. The footage I have seen of EJ in his it looks like it's got the glide. Our local course is an altered state site in the tailrace of a small power station (we built it over the last 20 years rock by rock, feature by feature) and as Im in the market for a boat that is going to be spending a fair bit of time there this looks interesting, but a Firecracker is a more sensible choice here. If I had a cement local, then Id probably be a starter.
