Aphantasia meaning: The inability to create mental images in one's mind.
I did a 7 day experiment with a family member where we attempted to activate her imagination to "see" images. After her entire life of not being able to do this, we were trepidatious to see what would happen. In short: We had a breakthrough!!

I feel yah Dakota. For many aphantasics it's quite the shock learning about this topic for the first time. That being said, I'm more and more a believer that if you desire to change your aphantasia, it is possible! So there is definitely room to grow in your visual imagination

I'm a very visually orientated thinker and I always took things literally until it was explained to me that some things people say aren't meant literally... metaphors, sarcasm and allegory took a long time for me to understand. Maybe aphantasics actually have a better understanding of more abstract / verbal concepts like this because their thought processes aren't tied to images? Just a thought :)

@@ChristophBackhaus Wait what? Can you explain this more? How do images slow down the mental process? And why would you want to train to be aphantasic? If I could physically see numbers in my mind, I would be able to do math in my head much faster, than when I can't. Also things like playing chess or something I would be able to map out the board and the position of the pieces in my mind to form strategies much easier.

I saw a video on Aphantasia a couple of days ago, and now I feel like I am in a Twilight Zone episode. I have been on this planet for 40+ years, and never knew people could actually picture things in their mind. The video was talking about how some people can't see colors in their mind's eye, and I was like, wtf? Colors? I assumed people were like me, picture the concept of an object, but concepts don't come in color/black and white. Colors are visual. That is when it hit me like a crashing wave. People can actually fucking picture things in their head. Now I keep remembering references to people saying things like 'picture yourself on a beach' or whatever, and now realize that is actually a thing. It changes my frame of reference for so many things. It explains why when I read books I always considered scenery descriptions to be filler words getting in the way of the plot. But if people can actually picture things? I feel like someone just walked up to me and was like 'dude, what do you mean you can't move things with your mind'

Yeah. Pretty much. Sorry for replying two years later. Questions I now have since learning i have aphantasia: What other 'superpowers' are real? Are people telepathic and wondering why I don't talk? (Seriously, this seems possible when examining the difference in perception that fuels my dissapointment that I have Aphantasia). I would say I'm eclectic and enjoy learning. I haven't heard anyone say something to the effect of: "Eh, just think it to me" as I have with people saying: "Just picture it!" when they're trying to alleviate commuication frustration. So I don't think that's happening. I see now why NeuroLink scares people. I also see why I see it as an extension of the CBI's used to fly drones, and not much more than that. It's just a conceptual expansion and transformation, for me. But for visualizers it's a full fledged visual pandora's box. Kinda blows my mind but reassures me that I am well-equipped for the future. And also, I sense that I perfectly understand my past frustrations now. Which is a delight and a joy. I do feel bad that I have been potentially cultivating actual visuals in other people's minds eye, unknowingly. I'm refining my understanding of how I communicate and dedicating myself to differentiating visually descriptive words from other sensory-descriptive words. Reviewing metaphor and meme with compassion for people with visualization ability / skill is almost joyful for me in hindsight. I'm realizing why I lose people in conversation. Gonna level up that skill starting now. The deeply inspiring question which imbues me now? If visualizers can hone their visualization skill, is it entirely a skill and I can learn it somehow? Or is it an ability from which I will forever be deprived? Catch me next time on: "Oh fuck it's comfy to forget but I just remembered other people can actually see in their mind." I'm gonna embrace it this time around.

Hey thanks for sharing! So, also an important note to differentiate: most of the population does not physically see anything when they close their eyes. Instead, they experience a vague sense of sight in their head, similar to when you think a sentence to yourself. So just because you don't physically see images when your eyes are closed does not mean you're aphantasic, necessarily anyways. Feel free to watch my second video for further clarification on this point ^.^

@@GORCDC true, people are confusing for having aphantasia and having poor visualization. I am not aphantasia, and people with aphantasia need to know, that we do not see anything with eyes, it's still black, but our awareness / focus is not on eyes anymore, it's on mind, as you said, a vague sense of image comes out, like thinking, with images. the detail of image depends on how good people visualize somethings.

I'm a professional artist with aphantasia and it's terrible sometimes, not impossible but hard and time consuming. It's like solving those puzzles that turn into a painting. You know what the result is supposed to look like but you can't actually see it until you finish it. Most of the time it doesn't look like the original idea because I couldn't see it in the first place, I had to improvise. Sometimes it looks even better than I "imagined" but sometimes I'm not satisfied at all because I can't see what I want to see and it's frustrating. It's a never ending experiment for me. It's also another reason why I despise reading books no matter how good the story is. I can enjoy it but I can't picture it at all so I prefer comics over books.

Hello, i am 26 years old and just now realizing that I have aphantasia. I actually cried when I figured it out because I feel like I’m missing out on such an amazing part of life. I mentioned this to my friend and she said, “no way, theres no way you’re as intuitive as you are but unable to visualize”. I am an extremely intuitive person, I can read a person the second I meet them, I can feel how certain situations are going to go, I know when I’m being lied to, I can feel my future, but can’t see it. And that made me realize, when you have not so great eyes, you tend to have amazing hearing, maybe it works that way for intuition and visualization. It’s just a theory, I have done no research as today is literally my first day realizing, but now I am so interested in getting to the bottom of this.

Based on your description, you are not aphantasic. What you lack is a rare skill known as *prophantasia*, where one can project an image into what they can physically see. There's much confusion about this within the emerging aphantasia community, and I'm doing my best to help clarify for people. In my second video I tried to lay it out =^.^=
@GORCDC
@GORCDC 5 лет назад
Orlandope, yes you're right in that people with Aphantasia don't lack an imagination. In this video I stated it that way, and later had to change my language around the concepts. Some of the most artistic, imaginative people are aphantasic! Yet there is still a huge difference between closing the eyes and having a vague sense of an image in thought form vs. closing the eyes and physically seeing something. The two are fundamentally different phenomenon / skills. And that's where much of the confusion remains within the topic of aphantasia. As long as we're assuming that closing the eyes and visualizing means that we're supposed to physically see stuff, we're not talking about the mind's eye. I may be wrong in my initial assessment that certain people are most likely not aphantasic, but that's bound to happen here and there since I can't transplant myself into the thought life of another person... So we just have to try to clarify together! =^.^=
@GORCDC
@GORCDC 5 лет назад
@Orlandope Dealer , Nice. So based on your description, you have moments of CEV's happening (closed eye visualizations), an ability which I have termed "prophantasia". In essence, these CEV's are different than when the mind's eye is operational, as the mind's eye is much more vague and in thought form only. But again, I may be wrong here since it's hard to tell since I can't transplant myself into your thoughts.

But one example of what we did was I had her stare at black and white images for about 30 seconds then close her eyes and gaze at the after image, or I also had her describe in detail her surroundings, or relive certain memories. Though, the exercises were extremely custom tailored, as I was flowing with what I felt would help her the most each session. I'm still very much in the experimentation of all of this, so stay tuned, as things will just get more refined as I go.

I would be incredibly interested in fixing whatever is wrong or different about my brain. I just realized I had aphantasia about a month ago and as a 35-year-old, that is extremely creative and imaginative, I was horrified that I had somehow been born without this ability. I have been reading everything I can about it, watching videos, and speaking to a lot of "typical mind's eye" people just trying to find out anything I can about what I'm missing or even if there are any advantages to being this way. One thing I have noticed is that since I only think in concepts or generally words, my vocabulary and use of the English language seem to be better than most. And my attention to detail is very good since I have to use my memory for things instead of relying on mental images. But those are the only pros I have been able to find. The cons list is lengthy. I also cannot hear songs in my head, or smell things, or taste, like people say they can. It sounds like wizardry to me. Like something out of a sci-fi movie and I don't know how you people go around all day "seeing" things in your head, and tasting, and smelling. It makes me wonder what else might be different about me that I'll never learn about. They say ignorance is bliss and I kinda wish I never knew this existed... but so much makes sense now that I never understood. Now I understand how my daughter can draw so well by accessing images of what she wants to draw and why my drawings all look like a lopsided balloon animal... I now understand why I have no sense of direction and why it's so easy for me to get over someone. If I can't remember things we did, or recall their face, it's easier to move on. I have no memories of anything. I can't recall that fun time I had with my daughter, or my mom, or my deceased grandma, and I wish I could remember her beautiful face, but I can't, no matter how hard I try. I finally understand that daydreaming isn't just a term for zoning out... And that people actually were counting sheep. The only thing in my head when I close my eyes is blackness and the only thing I ever hear is more of a thought, with no actual sound, and it's a dull monotone version of my voice, and that's it. There's nothing else in there. My whole life has been a blank, empty, imagination-less lie... At least I still have my dreams. They are all I have....

Hey there, Crystal, thanks for sharing! I hear your heart, in that this was a shocking realization to come to. Have you heard of Severely Autobiographical Memory Disorder (SAMD)? It sounds like you may be experiencing a measure of that, as well as aphantasia. My view on all of this is extremely positive, albeit somewhat naive. I fully believe in the brain's ability to utilize neuroplasticity to create new connections and build new skills. Although, it seems there is a cost. And that cost seems to be similar to developing any skill: it takes time, dedication, and practice. I know a guy who used to be a total aphantasic (couldn't see, smell, taste, hear, etc., in his mind's eye) who, over the course of 6 months, rigorously exercised his brain and ended up developing a vivid visual imagination. So there definitely is hope for your desires to come to pass!

I just did as much research as possible, in 2 hours, and I would assume your assumption is absolutely correct. The more I read about it the more I realized my memory is lacking in quite a few areas and the idea that I recall things by using facts and not being able to put myself there with a first person perspective is accurate and chilling, at best. I tried to think about the most important things in my life and I can remember facts but it's never from my perspective. I noticed after a few attempts that I was actually there. I was making up a memory that if I think about, I'm rebuilding in my head, no visuals of course, but I would assume I was there, and the other person was there, and the things around us. Since I can't see it or remember properly I think my brain just puts together what it could have looked like and I have a quick thought of what seems like I'm thinking about watching a play, starring me. If this makes any sense. I have no first person memories. I have very little memories at all. If I see a picture, I can remember facts about that situation or that day but never without a picture reminding me and then the thought in my head is pretty much based on that picture and I can't move around it or remember much else. Judging by what I've read and the effects of aphantasia I would easily wager that most people who have it, also have SAMD. At least the ones who have total aphantasia. I've always knows my memory was different but since I can remember facts so well and I'm the most detailed oriented person I've ever met, most people don't know I can't remember anything about my life. I think it has hurt my personal life greatly and I have never really felt a connection to anyone in my family. They are people I know, and love, but it is hard to build a deep personal relationship with people who are just people that have been around. It's like knowing you should love and respect someone you just met that you have never hung out with or really know much about.... The more I research and write about this, the more sad I become....

I just discovered I think I have full on aphantasia. I never even knew this sort mental sensing (since it's more than just visual) was possible. It was actually fairly distressing for a few days because i can't imagine family or friends faces, or how they sound, etc... I know all this information, I just can't make it a part of my inner mind. Even leaving a room I was just in, I can't recall an image. But on top of that, sounds, smells, texture.... What?! My mind was blown. I've begun to accept it, and am trying techniques like this. It's only been a couple days, so sadly I'm not seeing anything. But hopefully I will be able to at least once!

When you were talking about her dreaming and then recalling what happened, does that mean she could see i.ages in the dreams but when thinking about the dream she couldn't? After waking up from a dream, could she draw on a piece of paper a moment from it? Because I do see in my dreams but can't see the exact thing when i close my eyes. i do know where everything was so i could draw how it looked like. is that the same thing?
@GORCDC

So in my cousins case, she was not able to tell if she actually saw anything during her dreams due to the face that when she would recall the dream it seemed to be as if she was blindfolded during the dream. I just found out today that I'm pretty sure I have this. I can't recall faces or dreams or picture anything when I close my eyes. I was trying to do a meditation where you are supposed to picture an apple and recall if it had imperfections and spin it with your mind. I tried and tried but the most that I got was that my black "screen" turned almost red. More like red/black swirl and I could kind of maybe get it into a red blob if I really tried but it was nothing like an apple. I can't draw to save my life. I don't remember faces and when I dream I have a feeling of who was in it with me but I can never actually see their faces. It is more like a blob in the shape of a body. Sometimes I don't see anything at all, I just intuitively know what was happening without any pictures.

I can’t image anything in my mind does that mean I have it or is that normL
@GORCDC
@GORCDC 5 лет назад
If you don't even have a visual sense of imagery in your mind then you may have aphantasia. Say, for instance, when you attempt to mentally walk through your house, can you recall the placement of items, windows, etc? If you can, you may not have aphantasia (though it seems that even a select few of those with aphantasia can sometimes do visual exercises like this with great accuracy). But, an important distinction to make is that just because one closes their eyes and doesn't physically see anything does not mean they have aphantasia, necessarily. That means they don't have prophantasia, or the ability to project their imaginations into what they physically see, which is very different from the experience and function of the mind's eye. Hope that helps! =^.^=

I admit that I am only four minutes in to the video and have paused it to write this comment but I shall watch the rest of it. However I want to pick up on a point that has been mentioned already that has an implication that is just plain wrong, or at least in my experience. I am a complete aphantasiac and I wish I was not. It is something that in the past couple of years I have become very interested in having identified that it was 'a thing'. The point I have issue with at the beginning of this video is that it is implied that not having a visual recall of anything somehow means that the person does not have an imagination and that is simply untrue. The speaker says that when the architect came round after heart surgery he no longer had an imagination because he could not see things in his minds eye. The notion is also repeated soon after in different words. I have a very active imagination and always have but I have always had 100% complete blank minds eye. I can conceptualise things and still imagine what they are without the need or ability to see them in my head. So imagination is not an issue at all what is a problem for me personally is that I wish when I close my eyes I could see my Dad again or picture my kids when they are not around etc. OK so now back to the film !!!
@GORCDC
@GORCDC 5 лет назад
Hey Stephen, thanks for sharing! Yes, I actually completely agree with you! Since this was my first video, some things were not as clear as they would be now. Even at the time of filming I didn't mean to imply that aphantasics weren't creative or lacked an imagination, what I did mean when I said "imagination" was only referring to the ability to visualize images in their mind's eye.Though! I'm glad you brought this up! It's an important point! And if you truly desire to develop a mind's eye, I can say confidently that I believe it is possible for those who desire it. It seems to take persistence and dedication, but it is possible. I know a guy who used to be a full aphantasic, and over 6 months, ended up developing a mind's eye for himself. That being said it is also important to note the different types of visualization, normal visual imaginers do not close their eyes and physically see anything, but their mind's eye is active. My second video attempts to clear this point up, if you haven't already watched it, you should check it out: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RQbSQgfbwvg.html

AphantasiaMeow - Thanks for taking the time to respond, much appreciated. I shall check out your second video now as there basically is not enough material on this topic for me, right now. The realisation of having aphantasia over these past couple of years has actually helped me a lot in explaining how things have progressed in my life over the years. For example I never truly considered myself to be particularly stupid but yet at school I was always academically very middle of the class as far as end of year results were concerned. I always found studying for anything really hard work. Things like mental arithmetic or recalling places on maps at school were always very slow for me and as such I did end up believing that is maybe what I was - a bit slow. As it turns out however I find that the things that I did learn I actually truly did learn them for the long term and better than many of my peers did. I went into engineering and had a very successful business career all round the world. I think that this is, in no small part, due to me developing a way of absorbing knowledge and experience in a more practical and useable way than others I have since met who had great grades but it turns out had the ability to learn information that they could visually recall a short time later for the purposes of regurgitating it at an examination. Even today, I still struggle with things and I am now on a quest to find a way to make learning a language work for me as it turns out many people can see words or have an aide memoir from a text book to fix new vocabulary and grammar into place.

But a few days ago when I was half asleep I could see and hear things in my mind, it was like a half dream; Or lucid dreaming. I could see and hear things going on in the “dream” very strange but when I try to do it now and focus nothing appears... The most I’ve remember I ever saw was purple blobs and colors when listening to music.

Heya! That's actually a big key to getting these things to click on: being in a different state of mind. So the better you can get yourself into alpha / theta brainwaves, the better. But keep in mind: when the mind's eye is in operation one does not physically see anything. If you're beginning to physically see something then you're not practicing the mind's eye, but a different skill which I have termed "prophantasia". Prophantasia describes the ability to project images into what one physically sees.

AphantasiaMeow Oh, that’s cool? It’s pretty confusing still though. I found this Wikipedia on “Mental imagery” which is something like it. Yeah, I thought you actually imaged and saw it in your head when you closed your eyes. But prophantasia sounds pretty cool, our music teacher one time had us put our head down and listen to some weird chills music and we all had to say what color we saw. The only color I ever see is purple, is there any more information on this? If I can control it or not, haha sorry I’m just very confused on the topic.

@@yyurphy No apology necessary! It is a confusing topic due to the nature of the visual imagination. It is only experienced on an individual basis and is inherently subjective. At this time, we're trying to define and understand the previously undefined, so it's a process to gain clarity throughout this emerging topic. I don't know of a whole lot of resources which describe and train prophantasia. What I do know is that when one sees such phenomenon, it is scientifically termed "Closed Eye Visualizations" (or CEV's for short). Doing some light research on this topic may yield more information. I can also tell you that traditional image streaming techniques seem to train this ability. You can find a very helpful video on how to do that through the comment I have pinned to this video. Just wondering, have you found any link between aphantasia and extroversion or introversion, or between MBTI cognitive functions or Big 5 personality traits? I wonder if there is a correlation between any of these. If so, it might explain the processes going on and could be used to help someone who would like to start "visualizing" in a more specific way. For example: if you know their MBTI cognitive functions you might be able to develop specific techniques and processes tailored to that individual and their cognitive functions which could help them to learn to visualize better.

I recently discovered I have Aphantasia and had a long talk with my mom about it. It made so much sense why it was hard for me to learn in school. And why I thought having a photographic memory was a myth. (My dad, uncles, aunts and a few cousins have it). Also was hard to read book series like Harry Potter or the lord of the rings because I couldn’t imagine it, like it just didn’t make sense until I watched the movies.another reason why I’m terrified of going blind like my grandpa because up until I found out about Aphantasia I literally thought all he saw was black.
@GORCDC
@GORCDC 4 года назад
What's really tricky is that most normal visualizers, even hyperphantasics will only physically see black when they close their eyes. So within those conversations with family it really helps to differentiate what they perceive visually in their mind vs. what is physically seen when their eyes are closed (the black space). Both types of visualization can be done, but the projection type seems to be much more rare. Check out one of my other videos, where I gave it my best shot to clarify the different types: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eFqJ42oGOM8.html

So interesting! I’ve generally been aware that I didn’t have the visualisation skills others had but I have just learned about the term. Do you know about the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator? It evaluates how people perceive and judge the world. I think the two are connected. As in people with the same type according to the test are more likely to have aphantasia. Also, I do not think aphantasia limits the abilities of imagination. Maladaptive daydreaming is a condition that causes intense daydreaming that distracts a person from their real life. It is also an unknown term and has recently began to be taken seriously. The two people I know to have this condition also have aphantasia. Of course, this is just an idea and is not reliable (especially considering I am one of those 2 people) but I have indirectly put a lot of thought on the matter and wanted to share it nevertheless.

Hey David! You are, indeed, describing the experience of the mind's eye. There is much confusion within the topic of aphantasia as to whether or not one should physically see something when they close their eyes on the black space in front of them. This just isn't the case. And the idea is persistent and easily perpetuated by lack of clarity on our part (the scientific community). This is why I've worked very hard to help clarify for people! Check out one of my other videos where I attempt to break down the differences between the types of visualization as best as I can: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eFqJ42oGOM8.html That being said, if your mind's eye lacks clarity, color, details, etc. It's most likely that you indeed are using the mind's eye, but a bit lower on the spectrum than say, a hyperphantasic. I will say tho that when I'm tired I usually daydream myself to sleep, and for some reason my mental images are waaaay more vivid around that time at night or the more sleepy I am. I wonder if it has to do with the chemicals in my brain preparing me for sleep cylces. Luckily I asked my son to do the apple test and imagine a few other thing's and he was able too. I also know an acquaintance who practiced every day for about 6 months and developed himself a functioning mind's eye. So it definitely can be done. Also, whichever scientists are saying that aphantasia cannot be altered are definitely jumping the gun completely. It actually peeves me a bit to hear when people say that! There simply isn't the data to draw such a conclusion this early on in the topics lifespan, also new research in neuroplasticity would absolutely help us to assume the opposite is true. So all that to say, there is hope! Also, I hope you find a bit of value in the exercise I posted, however that's just one of many I've developed thus far, and I wouldn't expect anyone to have a breakthrough just based on that exercise alone. A while ago I thought nobody could visualise anything when they closed their eyes, but well I guess I was kind of alone about that

Yes, and there are varying degrees as to which people can experience these visualizations. Watch my most recent video for a lot more clarity.

Over the years I've noticed while driving new sections of road in countryside. That I would listen to recordings of lectures, podcasts, or music although the images not really visible in my mind at the time. But later could be many years travel down some of those same roads and I hear that story or podcast again in my head. Sometimes it'll be so specific that I know exactly what portion of a song was playing while I drove that section of road.

Ooo, that's a neat correlation to make!

I cannot see anything. I discovered this recently as I begin to try and meditate. I tried many different types of guided meditations but could never do it. Eventually, after many days/weeks/months of practice, I was able to quiet my mind, but never able to conjure up any images. The best I get is some swirling colors! I recently went to a healing hypnosis session that was a failure because it requires the use of mental imagery. I've been very frustrated because I could not do this. My 21 year old son says he can see entire movies when he closes his eyes! I think the reason I can't do this is because I had to grow up really fast. I had to be the adult in my house as a child. I had responsibilities no child should ever have had. I was not able to play pretend and be childlike from about second grade on. I wonder if this has any correlation? Thank you for sharing this video! I will be checking out the link and would love to hear any of your other tips or exercises you have found helpful! Thank you so much!

Miranda, you're welcome..! I'm glad you're blessed by what I'm doing so far. An important thing to note as you journey forwards is that the mind's eye does not operate in physically seeing anything. The ability to close ones eyes and physically see things is extremely rare and not widely understood. So a normal mind's eye in operation is more like getting a vague sense of sight in thought form. My second video describes this difference in detail. Definitely check it out =D And of course, feel free to keep in touch =^.^=

Thanks for the tips. Can't see anything visually when I am awake and close my eyes, but when dreaming I do. Weird.

Hey Olivia! I feel ya! Just a heads up, traditional image streaming doesn't help train the mind's eye directly. It does train a different type of visualization, though =^.^=
