Talking about the On video, amongst other things. From late 1993/early 1994. If you want to comment on use of the word "The" in this clip, I suggest you maybe concern your day with more pressing issues, nerd!
This is the dreamiest interview I've ever seen. The juxtaposition of his disconnect and the visual effects. And perhaps the fact that it's him. Just perfect. I've never found a video with the same quality of dreaminess.
Still remember the bit of software he wrote for the ZX81 that turned it into a keyboard. Absolute legend, this was back in about 82/83 he was still a schoolboy then as was I. Blew my mind that you could get sound out of the '81 let alone utilize it as a musical instrument.
Jesus christ this man is my hero. I sleep for half an hour, I dream up my music, I only release records to make money so that I can make more music, I have different't aliases to weed out the money mongers, I like to annoy people with my live music, I hate fans, oh and I hate this interview just so you know.
Very smart and humble guy. I saw Aphex live back in the day. He was completely absent on stage, just had a huge skinhead guy dancing like a maniac to the tunes for who knows how long, I just sat in the upstairs gallery tripping my balls off. Good times 👍🏼
2:05 is interesting because richard really believes his brother co-creates his music from another dimension. you can see it when he answered the „silly question“ very seriously
@@aden2276 When asked in 1996 about the Boy/Girl EP cover showing his brother's grave marker, he said that he sees his brother as guardian angel and inspires his music. This I remember from a late 90's FAQ website that does not exists anymore
@@k-yo Back in 1998 or so there was a site with all these questions about the releases and aliases around certain tracks. I wish I could remember the exact name of it. What is WATTMM?
Drugs had 0 influence on any of his music.. he even said it in one of his interviews somewhere. "You must have had some days where you were under the influence pretty hardcore from the feelings behind some of the tracks". "I dont believe in influence, life and reality i think are already there, youre just saturated in a certain area of your mind at various times, what is done to move to other areas is not influenced or motivated to do so, you just simply have to know the right path to take to get where you think you want to be." Insert the sound of brain matter smacking the ground... cuz mind blown.. and the best ways of saying self medicating over "doing drugs".. lol
He seems like he just makes music as a hobby and somehow he just got famous along the way. I always wondered if he was autistic. He doesn't seem to like people, and is very technical. That also explains why his ambient stuff is so unearthly, this guys brain is in a dream state by design. Legend.
Funnily enough, I have nights I sleep so deeply because of pure exhaustion and yet I can hear such good harmonies in my mind in my sleep. This has happened on many occasions too. I can see how he gets inspiration in his sleep
so ahead of his time this couldve easily been an interview from 1999 cuz easily most music during that time though great , sounds super dated now . one of my greatest influences, thank you Aphex Twin
Dang I didn’t know Richard made all his own instruments? That includes all the Roland gear? I thought that was a whole huge Japanese corporation, guess I was wrong.
He has made some instruments and tried to make a sampler at one point but it never worked and just made weird noises he sampled later, top tip about music journalists, they will believe and promote anything you tell them as long as it sounds more interesting than reality.
1993: innovative technological genius musician dragged into TV studio against his will. 2021: talentless Instagram DJs dragged into music recording studios against their will.
The interview is edited to look hallucinatory and all that jazz but I love how Richard D's banality about his music and unwillingness to go along with it breaks the idea to pieces.
Looking at this interview, and that MTV logo, i realize that i don't know anymore what we, the people are today, because we ate the world as it was back than and turned it into shit that it now is.
Once I fell asleep listening to blue calx, rhubarb, polynomial c, and those songs played in my dreams. Everytime I listen to those songs now, I think of the dreams I had and those songs bring me memories of the dreams.
So I guess we can all thank capitalism Richard has to earn his living by touring and making records. He would probably prefer a life without all of that while still being able to make music most of the time. Then, he would have been known only in close circles as some sort of electronic music wizard and gearhead. I wonder how many insanely talented people actually live quiet lives, staying relatively or completely unknown. I'm sure that there are some.
Probably more than you'd imagine. I believe it's safe to say that true Intellectuals with an artistic bent would rather ski barefoot down a cheese grater slalom than court fame/having to deal with what's "out there", so go on pottering away, unnoticed.
“I can suss out who’s in it for the music and who’s in it for the money” Then goes on to say “I don’t like making records, I just do it so i don’t have to get a job” So I guess you were looking for the ones who are in it for the money
He said he doesn't want to get a job SO HE CAN MAKE MUSIC! He Likes making music but not releasing records, meant he isnt in it to get rich but rather to make a living doing what he enjoys
