both made in the same era with similar instruments and audio technology i think. xtal already was a super mid 90's sounding song in my opinion so this kinda makes it feel full circle in a way

Funny enough a very similar video to this was what originally got me into Aphex Twin. In the first year of Siivagunner, they uploaded a rendition of Xtal using the Dire Dire Docks soundfont and I loved it. Happy to see similar stuff like it since I feel the SM64 soundfont lends itself well to Aphex Twin tracks

I don't know how the people cope that are forced to work two bull---- jobs such as retail, dealing with karens, or jobs with meaningless work, just so they can survive. never knew this was such a good pairing. Super mario 64 almost dream like atmosphere along with Aphex Twins also dreamy and ethereal music is such a good combo
Thanks to this remix you can hear a lot of the South American influence in the original beat especially around the minute mark. Perhaps Xtal was one of the first tropical house songs, and the production hid this aspect. I think SAW 85-92's best attribute is that each song has a distinct mood and atmosphere, Ptolemy in the SM64 soundfont would sound completely different from this, same with Green Calx or Heliosphan.
The sounds are very well curated and chosen, I can tell a lot of work was put into this, amidst the variety of usually copy and paste lifeless midi covers out there yours stand out as very well cared for. Thank you a ton for these videos, would love to hear more, and maybe some original songs too.
The original song hold a special place in my heart. During that time I had discovered Aphex Twin, I was going through one of the hardest times of my life. This cover though, has me tearing up as sm64 was one of the fondest moments of my childhood. Thank you for making this and I look forward to hearing more of your work

out of all videos I've seen discussing mario 64, I haven't seen one that explains how was this game able to achieve this unique indescribable vibe. it makes me happy every time I come back to it
It’s nostalgia, these games had a big effect on us as children, hearing these sounds again is like time travelling back to that feeling of being children again. Someone who’s never played video games probably wouldn’t get the same vibe from the sounds. Mario 64 music is objectively so well written and timeless but the sounds are pure nostalgia.
This makes me want to cry. I don’t know why. I’ve never played Mario 64, so obviously not much nostalgia for the game. I’ve maybe listened through this Aphex Twin album like five times throughout my life. I have no intense connection to anything here, so why is it making me so emotional? Help.
This soundfont is the most nostalgic of all time for me. I only started listening to Aphex Twin about a year ago but now it sounds like I've known of him all of my life. I'd cite specifically the Mario 64 File Select song as the song that brings back the most nostalgic memories. Listening to that one has a slideshow of images and videos of my childhood playing in my brain. The original Minecraft soundtrack for a little further into my childhood. Also - near the end of my childhood (16, 17, debatably no longer childhood) is when I discovered Radiohead which was the band that lead to my discovery of actual music and listening to albums, rather than just whatever played on classic rock radio stations or on the monstercat 24/7 twitch stream I would do homework to.
Imagine, before you'd seen any of these videos, someone told you that you were going to listen to covers of AFX, RH and BoC and that you'd think they were fucking amazing. I'd wager most would have called bullshit, with me being chief amongst them. It really is stunning work. A relatively niche meeting of worlds that capture a specific part of the zeitgeist from the past 20-30 years. And you know for sure RDJ has himself checked at least one out. Thank you for this very special bit of the internet, my man.
This electric piano timbre from SM64 fits well into most songs but especially sounds nice in Xtal. 👍🎹 Btw, do you copy these songs by ear or use existing midi files?
