The API 550A is a classic 3-band EQ, and many plugin manufacturers have tried their hand at creating their own digital versions of this legendary unit. Using a guitar solo as source material, I stack 5 different versions against one another - API 550A plugins from Waves, Universal Audio (UAD), Sly-Fi Digital (Axis EQ), Slate Digital (FG-A), and IK Multimedia (EQ-PA).

Waves, Slate, IK my favorite and in that same order. Nevertheless, all sounded quite pleasing...at least for my personal taste. Thanks for the shootout.

The other difference between these plugins is that the true emulations (Waves, UAD, IK) feature the band-pass filter ( below 50Hz and above 15Khz). It looks as though the filter was NOT engaged on the Waves or IK plugins, but WAS engaged on the UAD. I use the IK version often, and always engage the band-pass filter, especially on guitar parts - helps to get rid of some of the 'fizz'.

I'm sure some hardware purist snob is going to cringe at this, but I'll always go for the Slate or IK version (instead of Waves or UAD) because I fucking hate those combo knobs and the cluttered print around them! I'm glad Slate and IK acknowledged what a stupid design that was and decided to make them easier to use.

Good point. It's just that way to save space on the original hardware. No need for that in the digital realm.

The difference I hear that seems more important to me is in harmonic distortion. Some sound tighter or looser to me. I like the UAD because it sounds more even and controllable. I have the slate and have never used it after several tries.

I think the axis smoothed out the peaks the best .towards the end of the clip it distorts and crackles a bit.it sounded to me like the axis did the best job of smoothing it out..

Yeah sorry uad and ik versions just sound more pleasant and mix ready. The waves one sounds harsh on the highs and bland on the mids making more difficult for the guitar to be heard in a busy mix with maybe dual tracked rhythm guitars, bass and the drums' cymbals

to me it sounds like the slyfi has a bump around 100hz, the uad sounds most gritty to me. tbth i wouldnt mind using any of those, but i use the overloud gem550

the slyfi only has bell filters so it probably does have a bump around 100 when cutting 300.

I THOUGHT the Waves sounded the brightest. The Sly-Fi,Slate and IK all seems to emphasise the mid frequency noise that you can hear between the guitar bends

Green Light Sound you probably shouldn’t, you’ll want all their plugins and they are CPU hungry and need some HD space. 😜 Contact them with your channel info, they might partner with you to review their stuff.

I think that the Overloud emulation is based on the 550B.

I would guess they have cutoff at 20khz to get rid of alias frequencies, so I find it weird that Slate didn't incorporate that. I'm very doubtful anyone hears a slight difference at 20khz... let's be honest, by the time you are only 30 you probably don't hear above 17-18k, most even lower. Great comparison, I was wondering how different waves and uad are... so not very different.

Good points. UAD makes some great plugins, but the Waves is so close and so much cheaper that it's probably the better choice.
