I'm a born-again Christian myself. And not just any kind, I'm a fundamentalist Baptist, the kind that D&D players usually cite when they rail on about the Satanic Panic in the 80s. That all said, I have wanted to bring my faith to life on a tabletop for EVER! This book and The Adventurer's Guide to the Bible are two of the best shots I've ever seen someone make at bringing the Bible into RPG form. I would totally play a campaign of this. Doesn't matter if you can play a servant of the beast. Because I know that I won't, and that is all that matters!

Revelations is definitely a “need to read” part of the Bible as well as Genesis, Matthew and John. As a Lutheran myself, I like theology being presented here; there is a good and a bad side that many people are oblivious to, those being coaxed by satan don’t understand his intention. If people understood evil, they would have a lot less to point fingers at when it comes to problems in the world. I guess what I’m trying to say is, if this makes someone pick up the Bible and just read some of it, I think that’s a good thing.

As a Christian who sees the book of Revelation as mostly metaphorical for Christ’s Second Coming, I think the art in this book is really cool and I’m not bothered by the fact that you can play on the side of the devil. It’s just a game. The only thing that would be potentially off putting is a disrespectful depiction of God or Jesus
@samim5140
@samim5140 Год назад
Hi there, Josh. As part of the Acheron Games team, I can assure you that we have been extremely respectful of the religious theme, because of course it's a super sensitive subject. We worked on the Book of Revelation with a literary and folkloric approach. For the same reason, we use the names "Throne" and "Abyss" instead of "God" and "Satana". And there is no Jesus. It's a figure that we couldn't separate from a religious prospective, so we decided to not quote it for respect.

@@samim5140 Thanks for this reply, I was doing some research on the game and thought it would be instructive and interesting for my circle to play in this setting. But, we are pretty religious, and I was hoping that this would be clearly in a fiction inspired by biblical text, rather than a perversion or mockery of biblical text. It seems as though you have found a good balance here, and I appreciate the consideration and care.

Been watching for a while, but I don't think I've ever commented, however I had to comment when you signed up with "Anyway...." Thank you so much for not saying "anyways", which is not a word. One of the reasons I enjoy your channel & blog is that it is so well scripted/thought out and articulated clearly. I really enjoy seeing when you've posted a new video. As for the setting, I'm not certain about it; I like it, but I'm not a big fan of serving demonic powers nor of fighting angels, so I will likely stay clear, however there are several aspects of the mechanics and setting that appear quite mesmerizing. Cheers!

For those wondering whether the setting's mechanics can be adapted to other rulesets... I own both Inferno and Brancalonia (the two previous projects from the same team), and the peculiar mechanics were few and simple. The only aspect that I think would be a bit tricky to adapt is the ensemble of Inferno's classes, which worked a bit differently than standard 5e. If Apocalisse follows the same design philosophy as Brancalonia and Inferno, you should be good.

This is a Cool idea for a setting, and im sure Christians already playing DnD probably won't care about the presence of demons and will likely enjoy playing this.. however, I'm concerned about the disconnect between how these symbols are used in a role playing game, compared to how they're interpreted for historical and prophetic events in the real world, and might give people a completely backwards view of what they are supposed to represent. It's a game and doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things, but it might influence people's presuppositions about what many of the characters in Revelation are supposed to be. ..like the Locusts for example being negative figures, or Babylon the Great being a positive one.

This reminds me of Eden Studios' Armageddon: the End Times. The book was a hell of a read, but i couldn't make heads or tails of the system. This looks intriguing. I don't love 5e (bloated health pools, feats, 17 actions followed by a move and a bonus action etc..), but the setting might make me give it a look.
@liliththesolarexalted2206
@liliththesolarexalted2206 Год назад
Honestly, I feel like Eden Studios has been the best one to handle this concept and make it playable as a game. They even have a great way of allowing players to justify playing as demons in that the threat of Leviathan is great enough that Heaven, Hell, and even Pagan entities are forced to work together to stop the true enemy.

I've already ditched 5E before everything has gone on with the OGL and the Pinkertons, but this is the kind of thing I can see myself spending money on a final release. I wish it was its own system instead of 5E, but 5E is stupid easy to adapt into other systems. I am a Christian way before I'm an RPG gamer and I'm 100% on board with this stuff. My favorite video game series is Shin Megami Tensei. This looks like it will fulfill a similar catharsis for me: it's not about the fact that I can take Satan's side, it's about the fact that I can choose to fight for God.

I think the closest you'll probably get to another RPG that uses revelation, though more loosely, would be "Rapture: End of Days". It's a theological, sci-fi horror TTPRG. Pretty neat if you haven't looked into it, though I find it to be one of the more difficult to run since you'll often have some semi-coop elements instead full on coop because of hidden agendas. If you haven't seen though check it out. It's got a really cool settings. Also, most Christians probably won't mind the setting at all.

As a Christian I believe most theologians interpret John's revelation as a series of symbols within a historical context. Its the least literal book in the bible that ties togeather the symbolic prophesys of the of the old testament with the last days (after Jesus ressurection or rather our current time), as well as after his second coming (sometime in our future where God judges those who have not accepted Jesus sacrifice for sin). The art looks good but it appears to be a dark souls style interpretation of Revelations and will not tell you much about whats actually going to play out. The horsemen are symbols, so is the beast. Ways of describing forces in play at that time that paint a picture thats not always meant to be literal.
@DaveThaumavore

Yes, Revelations is not meant to be taken literally in real life. I agree.

@jacobstacey6911
@jacobstacey6911 Год назад
@@k9ine999 it’s a tough puzzle sometimes. Contextually if you were able to see literal visions of events playing out thousands of years in the future, you would only have your contemporary frame of reference to describe what you’ve seen. I am usually torn on how literally to interpret some of biblical content for this reason. Describing something today using a popular meme would sure look strange to people two thousand years in the future.

My very first game of D&D was on the playground of my Catholic grade school. My very first D&D character was a cleric named Father Anthony and he fought Chaos wherever it stood or lurked. So, yeah, I'm excited to see a setting done up like this. But I wont be buying it. I don't like 5e and without a preview of the bespoke mechanics I'm not sure there's a way to retrofit it to an OSR. Aslo: I'm just not a fan of the multi volume format for a 'setting' and not a stand alone game.

It's pretty clear that they're editing out portions of revelation that don't lend themselves to a TTRPG adventure setting, and hey that's very fine and good. But given that it's pretty disappointing to see this sold as some kind of actual reading of the book of revelation

I grew up in a Christian household, and this would have definitely freaked my parents out. I've never really cared for the whole angels and demons portions of the D&D monster manual, because it reminded me a little too much of some of the stuff I had to sit through in Sunday school, but I know there are D&D players out there that will eat this stuff up. Me personally, I've always wished there were better D&D sourcebooks for the intricate machinations of fey courts, since that seems a little more like the type of fantasy I prefer. Maybe there is something like that out there? I don't know? I think the art in this book is amazing, but the theme and what I've seen of the mechanics just don't interest me.

The John of the Revelation of Jesus Christ was John the Apostle, of course. This was always known, and nobody questioned it until the 4th century, and the questioning was from a Egyptian opponent of pre-millennialism who had no personal knowledge to support his contentions. There is no basis for doubting who John was, or at least, no more basis than for doubting who anyone else in the Bible was.
