The most impressive feat in human history is tearing a 3 foot piece of duct tape, down the middle lengthwise, without it getting stuck to itself all while in zero g.

I was thinking that... I can't even tear duct tape normally without it managing to stick to itself, my hand, and anything with a static charge within 3 miles

For those wondering WHY the scrubbers were different shapes: Grumman (who designed the lander) needed to shave off every ounce of weight that they could to make the lander work. They went with long, thin cylindrical scrubbers as these were the most weight efficient - they actually had two different kinds - there was a smaller 'backup' cylinder in the lander in addition to it's main one.
@jamesricker3997
@jamesricker3997 4 года назад
That white thing is why when they standardized the scrubbers for future missions they went with round ones
@Christopher_TG
@Christopher_TG 3 года назад
The real problem was that the command module and the lunar module were designed and manufactured by two different contractors. The lunar module, as you noted, was designed by Grumman while the command and service modules were designed by North American Aviation.

@@Christopher_TG And NAA needed a filter that worked for a week in space, while Grumman needed the lightest one possible. This wasn't a contractor issue. They could have been two different teams in the same company and they'd still have made the same choices, because they were solving different problems. What they needed was someone who was responsible for looking at the whole system as one, and some seriously paranoid contingency planning. But the truth is every bit of emergency equipment has become standard because there was a time it could have helped but wasn't available. We're a lot better at learning from mistakes than we are at anticipating the mistakes of the future.
@RovingTroll

During my engineering apprenticeship one of the training plans I had to go through was how to create an assembly SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) from scratch for a hydraulic pump. Damn thing took me best part of 2 weeks non stop and that was with guidance from my instructor who'd been teaching this same thing for near 20 years. God knows how these guys managed to create the SOP for creating that filter on the fly like that. It sounds easy, but imagine trying to explain to someone exactly how to build something over the phone without any visual reference as to what they're doing? It's not as easy as you might think.

"Boomer" from the original Battlestar Gallactica 1979 is asking a question!! Thing about this movie although entertaining, according to the engineers and Lovel , all these problems had solutions more or less and they just radio up to instructions. Early on they thought of every possible contingency although they didnt simulate a no way out test, the guys behind the scenes built the improvised filter ect however the loss of 2 tanks and explosions was basically a right off so they are Apollo 13 was extremely lucky that the explosion didnt break the tunnel or split other thruster piping and wiring as most of the compression left when the panel blew off. After that, they carried a 3rd tank on the other side of the SM and used stainless steel in the heater and changed procedures as this was caused by a run up of mistakes for this installation for this craft and was a freak accident as this hardware was very over designed and duplicated as much as possible. 3 fuel cells and 2 O2 tanks were more than the mission needed and redundant plumbing between the tanks and Yes a explosion would destroy both tanks, but they surmised, they be dead anyway, however this was a partial explosion but totally crippled the SM after a period, so unlike apollo 8 which didnt have the LM yet, they had somewhere to escape to till last min where they had to do entry in the CM with whatever power they could muster.

You have to explain to astronauts what “about 3 feet long” means. If it wasn’t about the length of their arm, they would have been lost and died in space.

actual process on how they built it. Step 1. rip off the flight plan cover and fold it into an arch. Step 2. open your garment bags and place the flight plan inside. Step 3. tape the bag over the filter end of the CSM cartridge. Step 4 and this is the critical step place the hose over the end with the bag do no tare it. Step 5 place your socks in the open end and cover the whole thing in duck tape in a grid fashion. Final step plug into the wall and watch the gage.

Considering they are flying at thousands of MPH in a tin can with virtually no power, half the side blown off and rising CO2 ppm, jury rigging a new filter for the system in Zero G I think they were already in "real trouble" lol.

I mean they got one thing wrong, According to the CAPCOM at the time, Joe Kerwin, the engineers designed the rig, then they made him build it and said "okay, now you know how to build it, tell them how to."
