What’s happening in this Apollo 13 movie clip?
When carbon dioxide approaches dangerous levels, ground control must quickly invent a way to make the command module's square filters work in the Lunar Module's round receptacles. Then, they help the astronauts building it with the materials they have with them.

What’s the movie Apollo 13 about?
Apollo 13 is the seventh U.S. manned space mission to the moon of the Apollo program, which includes astronaut James Lovell (Tom Hanks from Big, Forrest Gump and Philadelphia), Fred Haise (Bill Paxton from Twisters and Titanic) and Jack Swigert (Kevin Bacon from Footloose and Tremors) as crew. The launch was a success, despite a shutdown of the rocket's No. 5 engine. On April 13, 1970, astronaut Jack Swigert alerts NASA's command center: an explosion on board their spacecraft destroyed one oxygen tank and damaged the other, as well as several of the spacecraft's fuel cells. The Control Module Main Engine (CSM) may also be damaged, making the planned lunar mission impossible and forcing Houston mission control to hold back a trajectory through lunar orbit for the Apollo 13 crew's return to Earth. The loss of electrical power caused by the damage will then force the astronauts to shut down all non-essential devices on board, leaving them without assistance in guiding their spacecraft back to Earth.

Torn bag is huge. These guys were under unimaginable pressure told by a spotty radio how due a very complicated task by verbal commands and freezing cold, sleep deprived, and low on breathable air. Like being told how to solve a rubix cube in 90 seconds or you will die.

You have no idea how annoying the TV can be. When I first enlisted in the US Army, and the invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan happened, my mother-in-law did nothing but watch CNN, FOX, MSNBC, etc. it drove my wife crazy until she just took the TV out of the living room.

This scene exaggerates the problem. The filters had to be different for engineering reasons, but the procedure to substitute them was written as part of the flight contingency planning.
@patrickkanas3874
@patrickkanas3874 Год назад
Every procedure they used, even the power up one before reentry, was already written up. They were made with different scenarios in mind, but they served the purpose they were needed for regardless
@jamguy1152
@jamguy1152 11 месяцев назад
No it wasn’t. The procedure was concocted during the mission. The only exaggeration is the group of people working the problem as the issue appeared to be escalating (I.e. as this scene shows). In fact, they had already anticipated this would happen and one fella worked on it and came up with the procedure earlier on before it came to the point of being a life-threatening situation. Movies like to add suspense, I guess (even if there was already enough).
@wanderinwolf3804
@wanderinwolf3804 9 месяцев назад
@@jamguy1152 if I remember correctly, he was called about the problem at home and as he was getting ready to come in and on his way in he had already thought of and devised the solution. So it was really a spur of the moment idea... kind of.

My understanding is that using the LEM as a lifeboat and cobbling together a CO2 filter were things that had been done on previous missions.
@wanderinwolf3804
@wanderinwolf3804 8 месяцев назад
@@evanhaskel206 it wasn't used on precious missions, but it was something that had contingencies for, but with the amount of time they had, none of those contingencies could work that's why they had to hobble together the monstrosity they did.
