Yes, I’m glad they did that and put that on the air, when they easily could’ve edited that out. I think Steve Harvey really had a heart for some of these contestants, especially those that had obvious talent or at least gave an honest effort, while other hosts like Mark Curry just kind of encouraged the most chaotic environment possible for TV.
It’s a delicate issue, for sure. They were really harsh on her, and I suspect she had an upbringing where nobody ever told her she wasn’t the greatest singer of all time until she sang at The Apollo, which didn’t help. Amateur Night is the big show…can’t just have people getting a free pass because they’re teenagers. But at the same time there have been some teens in this competition who were phenomenal performers & it’d be a shame to exclude them altogether. I don’t know…just have to understand what you’re getting into when you perform on this stage. She’s in her late 30’s by now…I hope she was able to brush this off and go on to have a successful career!
She didn’t sound terrible, but we’re not about to pretend that the premise of the amateur night portion of the show is not “clap/cheer when you like it, boo when you don’t”. Steve was phony for calling the person out for being ignorant when he was literally making jokes about it seconds before. Kenny Latimore is always sweet and a gentleman, and I like what he did for the young lady backstage, but that wasn’t a moment for Steve to come on stage and berate someone in the crowd for doing what it is that people go to the Apollo theater to do. The young lady probably would’ve just been better suited for the Apollo Kids portion. She had much potential. Probably sounds amazing today.❤
