I live here in Washington State, and I came face to face with a cougar once, back in the early nineties. I lived on a dead end road off from a side road of a back road out in the small hills around here. I was walking down a remnant of an old logging road, alone, when the cat came into sight about 60 feet in front of me. This was in broad daylight so I could see it as plain as day. It hadn’t seen me yet, was walking across the path in front of me. I froze solid, hoping it wouldn’t see me. Then it turned and started walking right towards me, and that’s when it saw me. It hunched down on all fours and just studied me. I was frozen, not moving an eyelash, hoping it would go away. We stood there for several minutes just staring. I thought maybe if I just didn’t move it might think I was just a tree stump. But I didn’t know what I’d if it stood up and came toward me. I was downwind from it and figured it couldn’t smell me. Finally it stood up, turned, and walked off into the woods and underbrush without making a sound, not even a twig snap or a leaf. I couldn’t see it then, so I didn’t know if it kept on going or was circling around me or just sitting out there. The only thing I could think to do was look as big as I could, which isn’t that big for a 4 foot 11 woman. I picked up the biggest stick I could find near me and started waving it around and making as much noise as I could I was singing and hollering and I don’t even know what I said. I never saw it again, but I used to hear it sometimes at night just outside my home. It sounded like a woman screaming in terror. The first time I heard it I called up my neighbor and said did you hear that woman screaming and she started laughing. She said that was no human being, but a cougar. Fascinated me after that. So that’s my cougar story. I enjoy your stories Donnie. Sometimes they make me almost feel like I wish I’d grown up over there in the Appalachian mountains.

When my Daddy was young in the hills of Kentucky, he said people talked about wampus cats. My daddy said this was in the 1920's. He said they were scared, especially at nights. Your friend's story is very scary. Thank you Donnie fir bringing this to us. There are alot of strange things that are unexplained, and need to be passed down.

What a great story! Glad you are preserving these stories! There was an incident on a dairy farm near us one summer, around 1 a.m. I was reading and I heard the cows restless in the field and then I kind of a roar that literally would freeze your blood. It was nothing that belonged here; it was like something you'd hear on the plains of Africa. Made me think of a lion. You just knew, this is something that shouldn't be here. We found a calf torn apart the next morning. The roar was so loud you could hear it echoing in the valley. Not one dog barked. We never saw it, and I'm glad of that.

Some of the best gifts are stories passed down from the elders in our families. Things they have seen and heard from the hills and hollows. They did not make them up, they lived them. Some of the things were mysterious and scarry. There were things that can't be explained. Thank you Donnie for this great story, you keep Appalachia alive. Absolutely love your channel. ❤

Howdy Donnie- yessir, there’s things out there in the woods that you don’t know what is. We’ve had mountain lions in our yard. One night I went out and there was a black one sitting down on its haunches watching me. It went around through the woods and was still watching me. That time l removed a limb off the tree it was under just about two feet over it’s head. He disappeared and I went back to house. Thank you for sharing your friend with us. God bless

Donnie, I really enjoy listening to your videos…I’m from near the Appalachian region myself. Born and raised in upstate South Carolina. I wanted to share this story with you. Spooky yet humorous. My dad is from Alabama. Way back in the early 1960s, my grandaddy and his brother and my dad and a cousin were coming home from somewhere and were riding down a dirt road. It was late in the evening and the car got stuck in the mud. They got out and commenced to try to get it out of the mud. All of a sudden my grandaddy looked up on a hill next to them. He said about that time he saw the biggest “cat” he had ever seen. Said it had big ol long ears and he had never seen anything like it. My grandaddy ran up the hill and took off after it, said it was so big it was crunching corn stalks in the field it was running through. My dad was very young when this happened so didn’t remember a whole lot about it but said when my granddaddy would tell this story to others, it would scare him half to death. My dad was an adult when it finally dawned on him that what my granddaddy had seen was a deer 😆. He had never seen one prior to that. I think they had just re-released deer in to that part of the country at that time or something. God bless!

They HAVE been known to be in the USA. Just very seldom. I think I ran across one article that the PNW had a black panther sighting over 100yrs ago.

My family has land in Pocahontas County West Virginia just South of Marlinton. It's been in the family since before 1850. I know that it's been said throughout the years that there's mountain lions up there despite the general consensus that they've all been eradicated. I wouldn't be surprised if there happens to be some still in the area since Pocahontas is the least populated county in all of West Virginia! I believe you've mentioned before in a video awhile back & that I would completely agree, that there's probably numerous areas in those mountains that's never had a human traverse. So many hollers, caves & outcroppings for animals to nest down in for anyone to know for certain what's extinct & what's not. Another great video! Hope you're continuing to heal quickly! Stay safe!

Hey, Donnie! This video is still one of my favorites! I had a black panther living in the woods beyond my back yard that I caught in a video, by accident, filming a friend asleep in my yard. I didn’t know I did until I viewed the video on my phone a day later. I was shocked! He had always mentioned seeing a big black cat run left to right from the woods through the grass over to disappear out of view behind the old barn! Sure enough, it was true! In my video it runs through my neighbors yard, in the background at the top of my video. I’ve had hunters and farmers I know, raised in the area, and they had no doubt in their mind, from the look of the long tale, body size, the long sprints and the muzzle protruding out like a dog’s. than a house catit was a panther

Interesting video, Donnie. Three seasons ago, during our December muzzleloading season, I heard some strange sounds on our farm in northern Kentucky. The best way to describe it was like a roar but high pitched. And, it sounded like it wasn't more than 50 yards away. I've researched and researched online listening to all the sounds a bobcat, bear, or wild hog makes and I haven't found anything to replicate the sound. It was before daylight, so I never saw it. I only had my flintlock rifle with me that morning. I remember looking in my backpack for my pistol and I had forgotten it. I tell you now that is one of the first things I look for and pack when I get ready to go hunting during blackpowder season. I want more than just one shot. That's the only time something unexplained happened to me. So, I believe these old feller's stories.

Hi Donnie, George here. two years in a row, in the first week of february, theres a panther that screams at my cabin at night. his track is wider than my hand. I took pictures of the track right in front of the shed where my washing machine is. I don't go do laundry without the shotgun. folks like to say, its just a bobcat, but I know better, I shown the light on it one night and its eyes were level with the top of the fence. regular farm fence. I recorded it screaming that time. now, the fun thing to do with that recording is when the racoons are on the porch, I can play that recording and they jump over each other getting away, some will jump the the railing and others scatter down the steps. every racoon for himself! hahaha, good fun.
