To be frank, all over first world countries crime rate has been declining about the same time. So i wouldn't put the causation just yet.

Same here, it's genuinely felt so surreal seeing so many big public figures and politicians talking about our town. Never thought Apalachee or Winder would become international news.

Yeah it honestly blows my mind that the judge said that he could give him the death sentence, like did that judge seriosuly not do any research into relevent case law to try and get a better understanding of the situation?

I believe the judge is required to tell them the max/min sentence and wasn't actually saying that he may personally be given the death sentence. It's one of those things that are done so that a person actually understands the magnitude of the situation that they are in.

@@jimbojones6830 yeah i get that, but given how theres procedure for most everything in the courtroom id imagine there would be procedure in this particular situation for the judge to accurately describe their possible minimum or maximum sentence, so how is telling them something thats literally incorrect going to actually explain the magnitude of the situation better somehow? like wouldnt it be a better explanation to say something along the lines of "the most serious sentence for the charges that have been brought forth against you that i can render in the state of georgia would be the death penalty. However since you are a minor, and your crimes were committed as a minor you can not be sentenced to death, making the maximum possible sentence life imprisonment" like would that not be more clear than incorrectly telling a 14 year old that they can be sentenced to death?

@@isaacbenzing5686 The judge did immediately clarify (after court) that although the death penalty is a possible punishment for 1st degree, it is NOT on the table for this case. I think he saw the media reports and went "Oops, I probably could of been more clear".

They're charging him as an adult though iirc

@@KellingtonDorkswafer They can charge him and sentence him as an adult, but they aren't allowed to issue the death penalty to a minor, even if they are charged as an adult.

As a local in the area let me clear a few things up. He was charged as an adult. He has 4 years left of his life before lethal ejection

Lies, you have to be 18 to get death penalty no one under 18 in texas has got death penalty. Also you have to be 14 to be trial as adult in texas.

There was a correction after this. Minors can't be sentenced with the death penalty in Georgia or in the US at all

he is 14, so what? Does that lessen his crimes?? Does a 14 year old not know committing mass murder is wrong??

@@sekinnnnn1121 It does actually, the portion of the brain responsible for socio emotional reasoning, long term consideration and impulsivity is at that point wildly underdeveloped compared to what it would be even 2 or 3 years later
