Yeah, that would B kick ass to watch U summit live! I’m trying like hell to follow my new found obsessive hobby, hiking & backpacking. I can’t afford those fancy $3-400 packs, it’s Teton for me! Whatever it takes to get me out on the trail is my thinking. As $$$ gets better, I’ll upgrade my gear as I can. But I vicariously live thru U rite now, Frozen. I’m watching Baskets & Julie on their thru hike too. Frozen, Thank U so much for showing all of us the way. I also appreciate learning the small things from U too, simple things like trail etiquette & shelter etiquette. Blew me away those people took up the whole damn shelter w/ their 2 tents! 13 letter cuss word rite there! Thank you my good sir, stay safe, & B careful, ok? Keep the videos come’g!!
Your doing really good man! Almost there!! Sucks your pack tore but that stuff happens sometimes! Very cool of liteAF to hook you up like that. I def want to see the new one. I hike the ADK in upstate NY and the black flies are always crazy up here aswell. I carry a lightweight sea to summit bug net with me this time of year. I do reccomend them if you guys and a gal dont have one. They make a world of difference. Its still hard to eat your lunch with them regardless but hey their good protein..lol. Love the fire tower view too! We have a fire tower challenge you can do in the ADK. But i've only done 5 of them. Curious to know have you lost weight and was it the amount you expected or have you stayed very close to your original weight? Look forward to video number 50! Good luck out there man and you all stay safe! Hike on!
I know that feeling all to well, Frozen! Them knats are pretty bad here in Wisconsin and all the states in the midwest, southern, northern, and in the western territories to! Another amazing video! I agree with you on enjoying the scenery and not focusing on the rotten terrain! God bless and keep on enjoying the Journey! That is so neat and touching! God Bless his heart and family! We need more folks like him out there! Such a selfless act of kindness!
I’m planning a thru hike within the next 2 years and I gotta say I wish/hope I get a even just a sliver of the level of support you receive from people.
I’ll be sure to check out LiteAF - can’t beat that for service! I’ll be back on the Long Trail this July hiking from Killington to Sugarbush- my slow multi year section hike.
I thru hiked last year, don’t worry about stealth sites in the whites. There are tons. You can’t camp 0.2 miles on either side of a hut but like .3 away there’s always a stealth spot. If you’re using a hammock you’ll have even more options. Rattle river hostel is in the middle of the whites and it’s one of the best on trail imo. They shuttle to a Walmart and there’s a great bbq place in town.
Bro I left a comment before and have some health issues but I will section hike the AT and for what Chris just did for you, there's no dough that I will reach out to him and have my pack made by him, great business move! besides the bad ass company name haha keep up the great work Frozen I know Im watching your videos late but I found them and have to watch them all hahaha can't wait to see you summit.
Hey dont worry about stealth camping in the Whites. Ive been doing it for years and never had any issues. There are tons of spots especially if you have a hammock. How far in the Whites are you? Im up there just about every Tuesday and Wednesday hiking.
Too late now to change your wardrobe but all research indicates a few things about blackflies...1. The are most attracted to navy blue & black so that's why Toggs had so many around her. 2. They crawl back under the leaf litter at dark and then come back out again with the daylight so your evenings should be black fly free. After a few days of hot temperatures they "burn" off for another year. Thanks for the great videos and continued safe travels.
That was so awesome for Chris to do that backpack for you. I am so happy to see that the A.T. worked it's magic for you Jason and that you feel good with yourself and your life again that is super fantastic.
I backpacked 22 miles this past weekend in the same area, from VT Rt. 9 to Kelly Stand Road and felt the same way. Some combo of the bugs, mud, heat, humidity, trail ruggedness and lack of sleep due to a heavy snorer the night before made for a challenging slog. But it was still fun. Stayed at Melville Nauheim and Kid Gore Shelters. I've been using Sawyer Picaridin lotion packets and find them effective and much less yucky than DEET. So we had a ferocious snorer at the Nauheim Shelter. which led me to discuss with others: what should snorer-hikers (who are aware they are snorers) do re: shelters? Options: 1) use a tent as far from the shelter as possible; 2) carry a supply of new earplugs to offer others in the shelter; 3) stealth-camp; 4) give up camping. This was an older couple from Georgia and not only did he not offer us earplugs, I gave him three AAA batteries for his headlamp! Comments welcome on this.
🤔Yellow deli................................🤔Yeah, got strange vibes there! I suppose everyone has to experience it on their own and then draw conclusions.
Keep it up mate not long to go, sure you and the guys will make it for the time you wish to finish. Can tell the difference between our trails here in England vs your trails there in America ,I’m about to go out on my 5th hike for this year in July and been following you on every trail I’ve done since I started hiking in February , so just want to say thank you from one JASON to another, because watching you keep going on your life journey has kept me going throughout mine.👍🏻
Great to hear that you are planning a Triple Crown! Maybe some smaller trails in between to help with the need to be outside? I am curious - with the mileage that you are doing each day, how many hours of hiking are you typically doing each day? It doesn't look like you are getting into camp late most days.
On YT comments and creator studio - I run a channel myself (different account) and have noticed that in creator studio, I only see at the top in the comments section new comments on new videos. Comments on older videos often don't show up in there (have to scroll down, or go to the video and dig through that video's comments), and especially replies to comments get buried like this, and there's no way to sort the comments in YT studio to go through them like that. Maybe this is some of the challenge you are having (i have the problem you're describing, and I have waaaay less commenting going on than you)
I've been looking for a lightweight backpack as most of my packs are military surplus. With Chris at LiteAF doing what he did for you I'm sold on LiteAF! I detest bugs flying around me when I stop to take trail breaks or while sitting in camp. Permethrin and Picaridin lotion sometimes doesn't work so I bought a large sheet of Coghlan's bug net (white and dyed it dark green) and cut it to size to cover my head, arms down to my waist. It weighs just under 2 ounces and fits neatly into my map pocket with other quick accessible items. The bugs are still there but not on my face or arms. I'm really enjoying the AT through you and your incredible Tramily albeit vicariously.
Gotta give you credit for not trashing LAF for the pack failure, and Chris credit for the amazing customer support and service. Great advertising for his company, but still who doesn't like doing business with companies that stand behind their products and offer amazing support? Hope Chris and LAF do well.
WooHoo! I am saving this vid as your announcement to complete the Triple Crown!!! 🎉 That is awesome! PCT 2020??? GardenState said she wants to complete it by her 30 years. Maybe a 40 years goal? Chris is fab! That is great he is able to take care of your pack situation! 👍🏻 A face/head net helps with the black flies and mosquitos. They get pretty bad the further north you go. Don't worry, you won't get converted at the Yellow Deli. it's donation based and they have serve up whole foods..all good stuff. Don't worry about commenting. Like you said, just enjoy the scenery! Happy trails to you and the tramily! 🌺
I know you have spent a lot of time reflecting while on trail. That is part of your journey. With your stated goals of the PCT and CDT, it is interesting to take a moment and reflect on my own life since you started in February and where I might be when you summit. Lots of big changes, though nothing has concluded yet. Maybe by July 3. Thank you for sharing your journey. Following you has opened my eyes to possibilities. Walk safe.
The mud reminds me of my SHT hike! 😬 Good Luck and have fun! 👍😀 btw my sternum strap on my Arc Haul broke during my SHT trip. I did make it work for the rest of my hike.
Spent 4 nights out in the Adirondacks this weekend and I feel you on the flies. Black flies and mosquitos are horrible this spring haha. Great progress though and glad to hear you'll be keeping to your schedule. Home stretch!
Doing great Frozen, but get use to the rocks. NH is made of granite everywhere-----but incredibly beautiful! Hang in there - the higher you go in elevation the less the bugs -- but this is the time of year for the black fly's, mosquitos, etc - you are almost there!!! Keep on and enjoy!
Congratulations, you are on your way to the true dirtbag life! Triple crowning is just the beginning. :-) I started in 1979 and never looked back and never re-entered completely and it's been an incredible life so far. Always wild, always outdoors!
The snow just melted so hard to do trail maintenance and the reasons for all the blow downs and mud. Trails are officially closed until Memorial Day because of these factors in VT and NH.
Patty Patten yes I know trails are open in the winter. I live in NH on the VT/NH border. I should have said shoulder/mud season specifically which is when he was hiking in May. It was more in reference to the blowdowns and mud and why those obstacles are present. It’s not because of lack of maintenance.
You mention wanting to do the PCT and the CDT. Have you ever considered thru hiking the NCT? And unrelated, have you ever thought about doing the ADK 46?
Loving that you've brought me on your journey Frozen! I've been following since a few weeks before you started the AT and i hang out for your next update each time. Just wanted to touch base and say keep up the enthusiasm!... loving your positivity! Can't wait to see you reach Katahdin. PS... I want a Lite AF pack now. Those guys are awesome!
Saw a moose a year or two ago driving from North Conway to Crawford Notch ... Only one I saw in five years but so cool. You've made me want to get a lite af someday. Chris sounds incredible ... So thanks Chris ...
Too bad for the pack damage. Great service from LiteAF though! Dyneema is just not as strong as nylon or x-pac when it comes to seams or sewn connections. My friend's Arc Blast's shoulder strap ripped right out of the pack body during his AT thru hike. I didn't make one thru hike.
Tyler McCandless I get the sentiment and the encouragement (and I’ll be cheering him on too) but hold your horses....he has yet to complete this first leg of the Triple Crown. Completing any hike is never a given, let alone completing a huge achievement (and life commitment) like the Triple Crown! For instance, this year my GF and I completed 3 weeks hiking in the Everest Region in some pretty extreme conditions, but last year my GF fell while strolling in a local Edinburgh park and broke her wrist (on the day after we arrived, which put an end to our Scottish Highlands backpacking trip)! We thought we’d “got this” but no... So, here’s to Frozen and his safe completion of the AT! Then we’ll see what life brings him!
Outdoor Adventures I figured brother with accent. Been talking with Melazana for a hoodie. No go. Dang didn’t know it would be this hard to get one. Why have a website if you can’t order.
They don't start doing trail maintenance in VT until June 1. I think you were there a week or two early. Hoping it's better by the time i do the LT in September.
Eric Avery hi. I do volunteer trail maintenance with the Worcester section of the green mountain club and we just maintained our section the 17th/18th so enjoy!! The section from kelly stand road to the winhall river. Up over Stratton.
Sounds like good life lessons. focusing on the positives around us helps us endure the difficult days. also, your making me a fan of LiteAF. think one of his packs might be in my future:)
i feel the pain about the black flies, tried camping in the Adirondacks the past two weekends, they were awful. Annoying bug nets may be a necessity. Poor Togs, hope the bugs let up for you guys soon! On the flip side I can't believe you are nearly done so soon, you guys are surely crushing the AT!
Your comments about Chris and Allied AF have led me to buy one of his backpacks he could’ve had a better endorsement than what you’ve given him God bless
Thank you for another video! You have inspired me and I went out over the weekend to achieve a hiker milestone for myself of 25 miles on the Loyalsock trail, 17.5 of them on day one!
Shout out to Chris and LiteAF... thanks for sharing your thoughts about being home vs on the trail... it’s great your group has turned into a well oiled machine to crank out those miles and keep each other motivated. Finish strong and Finish together!
it may be too late but put some shoe goo over ripped area then after it dries for 8 hrs. or longer put gorilla tape over the shoe goo area it should get you to katadin
That’s so exciting to hear you say pct and cdt! If your video content is half this quality it will still be epic to watch! Congratulations on 1600! Keep on hiking!
I could listen to Togs and her Alabama accent all day! Have you thought about getting one of those head bug nets to help with the flies? Also have you trimmed your beard at all during the trip?
You have 35,000 followers, Chris would be crazy not to totally help you out with the new pack. Yes, it's SUPER NICE of Chris to make you a pack but it also good business. Chris is a good businessman. I would definitely buy a backpack from him. Great customer service.
George Frole Well he is going to get a sale from me. I love to support mom and pop businesses and he has shown everyone what an awesome business he has!!
Just FYI....Wildlife poop is called Scat. Wow for Chris giving you a new pack, kudos. Black flies are attracted to dark clothing, that's why Toggs was swarmed by them. Deet would help. All the very best to all of yous.
Awesome! Love the vids. I remember how bad the Black Flies , mosquitos and blow downs were in Maine back in June 2017. The next and most important question is, are you going to keep that epic beard or are you shaving it off when you get home?
don't fear the moose! they only get fiesty in the breding season. october on. they have taken a real hit lately because of ticks so they are not too common now.
5-6 years is too long in between thru hikes at your age. You'll be married with kids by then. Do it as close to back to back as you can. You won't regret it.
Dont worry about camping Stealth in the whites. It's easy. Plenty of stealth sites if you know how to find them. It will be the best part of your trip.
