Thanks John. I've been hanging with the thru hikers every weekend for a month. Soon they will all be far north of here and gone. Maine they say, it is their goal you know. Big K. What a great bunch this year. I sure hope I can (as the saying goes) Represent.
Good for you kid, really. It's a great journey, one that will set you up for anything life throws at you down the road. Make it happen, you'll never regret it once you finish.
I met Napoleon at Shaws this year. He's done two thrus of the AT since this, and thousands of miles on trails across the globe. He's one of the most well-spoken men I've had the pleasure to meet, and he'll preach if you let him. Truly a special human
I truly believe that once your finished with this project, putting the kind of effort and quality that you do in all your things, i will be watching this on the discovery channel. You surely inspire a lot of people, myself included.
Most hikers who have completed the trail will agree that they went overboard on the purchase of gear for their trip. Most never realized how very little gear it takes to do the trail. I'm not talking about the "ultra lite" style, which can in many ways cost more to pull off. The fact is thru hikers really don't need much gear at all to do the trail . Nor do they need expensive gear. Less is better. One trick is to buy cheap cold weather gear, because it will only be used for a few weeks or so...
@NOVAdashcam He Thru Hiked the AT in 99, and walked across America in 2000-2001. I think We may have crossed paths at one point, but I can't seem to recall when. I think he's from NC.
@Jobrewerful1 I was unaware of this contest, but very aware of the 75th. I suppose I'll enter this video then. I guess I'll have to edit it to under 3 min to stay within the ATC's rules before I do anything. That kinda neat that the ATC is doing this. Hope Apache is doing well, and thanks again for letting me know about this contest thing.
@baddogonline Yes, I agree. He kind of astounded me during the interview. A very humble, and kind individual. His observations are not unlike many thru hikers. He just put to words what many of his peers would also say if they could properly articulate the way he does. I have no doubt he will reach his goal.
Yes! Very long conversations in fact. With the little distractions that we are consumed with here in the "real world", out there, well, those are gone. You can talk all day if you know what I mean.

I believe Buck (Big Pan) might be starting his hike this day. I'm going to try and catch them when they come thru my neck of the woods. I'll lure him with shrimp, and doughnuts.
The best description of the trail that I've heard, and I've listened to many a thru hiker try to explain it. Would love to hear him elaborate on the community aspect of the AT, as well. Impressive work, KM!

You did it again...the thru-hiker did it again! Life today has allowed us to forget that good living, good loving, faith, success, peace and happiness - are all learned, earned, and experienced journeys we choose to take. Sometimes alone and sometimes crowded. Too often we forget to make the choice and make the time necessary to partake in these life enriching journeys.
Great advice! I have also heard the ultra lite principal being very important, im trying to keep what I pack down to the bare essentials, and internet resources have been a great help in determining what is essential and what is not. Thanks again guys!

Have you ever crossed paths with a hiker that goes by the name Sheltowee? Not sure how big the hiking community is; he was pretty "popular" back in the day.
