In response to the recent global situation, while we shelter in place, we are planting an emergency victory garden to supplement our food supply and improve our sustainability through this event. Jaimie my parents were children during the depression. Fortunately, I can garden and preserve the produce. I am thankful for the education and so very happy I passed along the lessons to my sons.

i too am in appalachia and over the years i have found that the clay really needs massive amounts of organic material and large amounts of coarse sand. my ratio is 1 part soil(clay), 2 parts sand and 3-4 parts compost,(stable sweepings/ cow poo/chicken poo ect..) once i did this and did an at home soil test i was able to amend the soil for acidity and then took a sample to be sent of to the soil lab here to find out the micro and macro nutrients needed. The next year was AMAZING.

I follow Living Traditions in Missouri. They are only a little over an hour from us so they have great information for my area. I still learn from others all over the world though. Several years ago when I started my research I learned a lot from you as well. I do agree that having someone teach and talk about what they are doing that is in my area makes things easier. That said, I cannot call my garden a victory garden even though this is my first year gardening. I've been planning for this for most of my life. Spent three years in hardcore research. Two years talking my husband into it. Last summer transforming my backyard into a raised bed garden. Received a greenhouse in the fall. And, began gardening this year. I feel bad for those who are like me and have a black thumb and trying to get started under pressure. It's a good thing for you to bring this information to folks especially in your area. You're a really good gardener and folks will learn a lot from you.

My Grandmother Hazel had two Victory Gardens. The larger one became our house building lot after the war ended. I was blessed with growing up next door to Gram and was attached to her apron strings. Her brother, Ray, established Ried's Poultry Farm in Bedford, New Hampshire. 2,000 Rhode Island Red laying hens. They taught me how to be more self sufficient. So we did ok in the 1950s, with a roof over our heads, healthy foods and family. This spring, we are putting in fenced, raised beds on our woodland home. Yes, we are trying landscape fabric at the main farm kitchen garden. Thanks for showing how to work with it.

In Montreal, bucket gardens were made on porches, rooftops, and fire escapes. They beautify the neighbourhoods, and socialized people too - any gardener was ready to accept compliments and to offer tips on how to do it. I was there in the late 60's I was told that the whole movement started during the war - and had continues on till I got there. I hope it's still going on there!

Thank you! Your going to have a beautiful garden. Ours is about the same size and we are on a very small budget so we use cardboard boxes held down with rocks between the rows. If your able to have dogs in your new place I highly recommend a Great Pyrenees. We have one and he protects the chickens and the garden from all predators. Once word gets out in the animal kingdom that there is a Pyrenees they steer clear of the property.

We live in Virginia Beach Va. We have already started our garden again this year. Our local garden center and our local Lowes and Home Depot says they have seen a bigger demand for vegetable plants this year. Our back yard is only about the size of your garden so we have a small raised bed as well as a number of containers. I actually harvested some romaine lettuce today and had a nice salad for lunch.

Sadly, many politicians don't want people to have gardens. It takes away control from the government. Life has certainly changed since WWII. I'm going to give it a shot though.

Check out Roots and Refuge channel. They have an awesome gardening and farming channel. They use cattle panels for their vertical gardening. I think you'll really like Jess and Miah and their channel. Btw, Marina is not only a beautiful name, she's a beautiful girl and seems to be an incredible helper. I was concerned with her mixing the fertilizer without a mask though. It was putting off a very fine powder that would be too easy for her to breathe in and I know you don't want that. I could just easily see it, I suppose, because of the camera. Btw, I'm Dana. I've been binging you guys a lot for the past couple of weeks since I found you and I'm loving your channel. Thank you for all of the wonderfully helpful information.

I used that fabric before works ok for a few years butyou cant easily amend soil or booadfork at all. one other thing i learned is that rows need to be wide enough for a wheelbarrow and for me to kneel next to the garden bed

Great to hear the Victory Garden reference. I’m not a fan of the plastic cover, it’s not the best for soil health. Great for weed control, not much else. Mulch does both, weed control, and improves the soil.

I’m a fan of the no dig method but that can take a longer start up unless you can find and purchase a large amount of compost. Works great in a coastal zone b. Not sure how well it would work in the south though.

I use wood chips and compost. I also do not till at all, what few weeds I do have are easy to pull.

Are you familiar with contour farming? That's a large plot you had created, and it is on a slope. You are going to have issues with soil erosion. The Tennessee Valley Authority in the 1940's began showing farmers in Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, and North Carolina to plant their crops perpendicular to the slopes, following the contour of the land. This prevented soil erosion. My grandfather had a 280 acre farm in what was then rural Franklin, Tennessee, and he grew crops for 40+ years on that property with no erosion.

@ Hideout Good point, and one which is consonant with "lynchets", which are earth terraces perpendicular to the sides of hills. They are a feature of ancient agricultural field systems of the British Isles, and can still be seen in the landscape to this day. They are commonly found in vertical rows and more commonly referred to as 'strip lynchets'. Lynchets appear predominantly in Southern Britain and many are in areas close to Iron Age forts and other earthworks, including later Roman earthworks and earlier barrows from the Neolithic and Bronze Age periods.

I use that same weed fabric in my garden. My advice is use an auger drill bit to dig holes and then add fertilizer to each hole before adding plant. I use alot of rabbit poo but also add fertilizer specific to each plant.

Looking so good. It’s really physical but the reward is wonderful. Helps you sleep at night just knowing you are being proactive in providing healthy food for your own family. I figure plant a bit extra for the wildlife, but be strong in safeguarding your plot too. This winter might just be calling those veggies into becoming a warm soup or a hearty stew or canned jars in the pantry. Loved the peak a boo view of the house in the background - high up the mountain. This current crisis might prolong the construction time, but it will get done in good time. Food, water, shelter and can do attitude. Priorities just like our ancestors before us.

If you have some cattle ranchers near you, see if you can get some molasses & mineral lick tubs. They are near 20" wide and 20" deep which is great for spuds or a couple of tomato plants per tub. You can move the plants to a sheltered spot if hail is in the forecast.

I think everyone can grow something. I live in a small apartment and only have a 2x4 foot space outside I can use. But I grow in containers inside and out. I do microgreens and sprouts as well as herbs and some vegetables. sweet and regular potatoes are easy to grow in containers as are tomatoes and greens, summer squash and carrots and peppers work well too. Pick something you like and just try and see how it works.

For those with wooded land you can also do mushrooms to supplement what you would normally buy. With a large harvest it is worth it to dry any extra for use out of season.

Check your rainfall. Did your area get a lot of rain last year. If you get a lot of rain, you will need raised beds so the rain can drain onto the pathways. My area normally gets 52 inches of rain every year. But we have been getting even more rain. Local gardeners have been struggling with all the rain.

We do get loads of rain, or have in the past few years. We did take that into consideration when putting in the in ground garden as we know where the water pools and where it stays kind of dry. We will watch for flooding and adjust as needed.

How exciting!!!!!!!!!! I love gardening! I recently turned my entire backyard (which is pretty small actually) into a vegetable plot and I've planted fruit trees around the perimeter as espaliers so they take up less room and are easier to manage. Y'all are so LUCKY to have such a huge garden! Living vicariously! :-D And I loved seeing the mother-daughter teamwork planting the garden! Adorable!

I remember going for walks in the woods with my dad and he'd always have a canvas bag that he's look for leaf mold. When he was younger one of his jobs was cleaning up the horse droppings at the cross street. The horses would reliably do their business as they were stopped waiting to turn. My dad was born in 1912 and gardening was something he did his whole life, even if it was a few tomato plants.

Yes, ma'am! Been encouraging folks to get started on gardens even if they never have. We are doing the largest gardens we have done so far in spite of Tom's chronic pain and my recent knee injury. And this is something I hope everyone will do from now on, not just while they're scared. On my video today, I recommended your raising chicks video as well as Patara's because of some folks suggesting chickens (something, as you know, you never want to do if you have not researched!) and my fear is that they're panic buying chicks. Have you thought of doing contoured swales? Harvesting rainwater in the soil changed the way we grow, everything is even and abundant!

I dont know if you like mushrooms.... you can add mushroom spawn to logs to grow your own, it lasts for up to 8 years. Use a solar dehydrator to preserve throughout the year.

Dish soap with water will kill the aphids and other critters . Hoop netting will save you from predator birds " yep", birds love fresh fruit. I used the plastic flags on a string you see at car lots, helps keep birds away. And makes your garden colorful. (-: oh, solar electruc at the base of your fense, you have groundhogs and other critters to contend with , mostly at night whyll your sleeping (-:

Wood chips make a better weed block than the fabric and can be tilled into the garden in the following year, adding organic material to the soil. Fabric will only last two seasons at most before becoming brittle so it is a recurring cost, wood chips are free.

We grow every year in our backyard.for tomatoes we wait until the plants start to grow so we know where the roots are so we don't damage them with the stakes. Same for the beans.

I encourage everyone to also research the latest aquaponic vertical gardening systems that are out there. Wheelchair-bound people can even use these and they cost about the same as an inexpensive refrigerator. Grow 1 pound of greens with 3 gals of water instead of 72, as well as year round indoors. 220 cherry tomatoes in the dead of winter from 2 tomato seeds.

I know this is a bit late but I cut mine plastic tarp with the torch so it took care of both the sealing and cutting at the same time. I like the idea with the can, now I need to remember it when I get ready to plant. By the way when I pulled up my plastic for the winter I found that I had stepped on a mouse that was making it's home under the plastic. The biggest problem I had with the plastic was the wind. There are no trees on my land and therefore no wind block and the tilled soil didn't hold the pins.

It was a lot of work but it'll be great to harvest those veggies and not have to weed!! We are growing many of the same vegetables mentioned. Turnips, beets, carrots are great to grow and can. We can tomatoes and even Swiss chard. I made a lot of pickles last summer because we had a bumper crop of cucumbers. We in Vt. have to fence in the garden or the deer would ruin it. We also have berries and fruit trees. Love everything we can and freeze! Best wishes from Vt!

The Grow Veg app and channel is fantastic!! Excellent for small spaces too. And growing something right now is SO important. Also, and this is just my opinion, being too much of an “organic purist” right now isn’t super important to me. Now obviously I will do all I can and be as organic as possible but having food is most important. If folks are growing for the first time and don’t have a ton of fertilizer (compost) stored up...use some basic 10/10/10. If you don’t have row covers to protect your brassicas then use some 7 dust! Whatever we do, I believe we need to take this seriously and do all we can to help ourselves. It’s more important WE have food to eat and not to feed the caterpillars! Grow up a fence post, on a balcony, on a deck, if one can find something to put dirt in, grow in it!! I am praying for all of us that’s for sure!! Great video. Our gardening styles are different, but as long as they grow food and I have plenty for myself, friends, and neighbors, that's all that matters.

I have a small garden that I plant each year and I used the landscape cloth on top of each section, I cut a hole to plant my vegetable and then on top of it I put mulch to hold the cloth down. Been doing this for a few years now and it works great with a small garden. Your garden is way too large for this but people with smaller gardens will appreciate no weeds in competition with their plants.
