Thank you so much for this. Bad Tom is my 2nd cousin 2x removed and Judge Josiah Combs is my 4th great uncle. I was raised in Mousie and Quicksand KY. I had no idea I was related until I started doing my ancestry tree. My dad is a Combs and his mother is a Smith.

JD, thank you for this story of Bad Tom Smith. He did some terrible things in a lawless time. But in the end, he finally saw/heard God calling him. He gave his life to God & he was forgiven. When we confess our sins & know that Christ died for us~~ we are saved! So was Tom!

Thank you. For some reason, we were not told the stories about this type of History of our Commonwealth. I was taught to stay away from certain places in Kentucky; but, I was never told why. In fact, we were not allowed to ask, 'Why?". These things happen over 100 years ago; but, the taint has stayed. Hopefully after my generation passes the taint will die with us. There is an argument as to whether men are born evil or made so by circumstance. But it begs the question: if some men are born evil, does that evil grows on its own or must it be nurtured. No doubt the circumstances of his childhood nurtured an evil in Tom Smith. That evil no doubt disguised itself as desperate self preservation when he was young. And later he nurtured it himself into ruthless self preservation and then cruel indulgence. But was he born so or, if circumstances had been different, could he have been as good as he had turned out to be bad? One will never know. Such men seem a whirlwind of chaos that dissipates leaving no trace but the damages and causing us more questions than answers. I would not venture a guess as to whether he was forgiven. But, if he was indeed genuine in his last moments, I imagine it is possible. Guess we’ll all find out when we get there. Excellent story as always! Thank you!

Absolutely an amazing, evil, and joyful story. The good Lord says to repent and youbshall be forgiven. Only the good Lord knows the fate of this story. I hope he was forgiven for the message he gave to others at his end. But only God knows if the message was truthful or not. Thank you for the story, hope, and inspiration for forgiveness. God bless you!! Love your channel and the way you present history for us to learn, live and acquirer knowledge in order to lead us in future decisions!!
