Apparently There Were Complaints... & other non-fiction I've read recently

I'm back with a non-fiction only reading wrapup! This is a mix of celebrity memoirs, Old Hollywood biographies, true crime, and corporate whistleblowing/histories.
Some of these are REALLY GOOD! But you might be surprised which one I found slightly dry (and don't recommend to non-fiction newbies).
Correction: I say Me and My Shadows was a mini-series on CBS. It was on ABC in the US, actually.

It's interesting how many layers of cooperate marketing, societal perspectives, and interpersonal projection you have to peel back just to get a glimpse of who the real Marilyn Monroe was. It's interesting and sad.

Yes, that's exactly it! The one I read feels like a good picture of her family history, mental health struggles, and her intelligence, but I still don't feel I know her as a living, breathing woman. I'd be really curious to read a biography written by a woman.

I'm not an avid non-fic reader and I've already forgotten the title of the first book BUT that cover though... awesome! I can see that describing that cover to a clever librarian will be enough.

Thank you for this! I LOVE Sharon Gless-she was an amazing badass on Burn Notice and I grew up watching Cagney & Lacey, and she deserved all the props for Queer as Folk. I didn't know she wrote a memoir but I stopped this video and bought it, as soon as you said her name. I am so excited to read this, thank you again!

There's a podcast based on The Devil's Candy. It's through TCM. Julie Salamon narrates it. A great Marilyn Monroe biography is Marilyn In Manhattan by Elizabeth Winder

My favorite of the Marilyn Monroe books from a journalistic standpoint is "Goddess" by Anthony Summers. He didn't know her and doesn't fawn over her but sought out interviews from people who were around her during her lifetime, as well as followed paper trails (receipts, letters, telegrams) to tell the story. Some of the Monroe fans don't like Summers' book because it doesn't varnish her human flaws, so it's a bit of a controversial choice, but he also didn't go for blood and I felt he painted a realistic and sympathetic picture while being objective.

I’ve read a LOT of true crime over the years and have some very specific favorite authors, but one of the books I’ve never been able to forget (and definitely one of the top true crime I’ve ever read) is Deadly Intentions by William Randolph Stevens. This story was absolutely incredible (in a horrific way) and completely unputdownable and unforgettable. Edited to add that one of my absolute favorite podcasts is The C Word with Lena Dunham and Alissa Bennett. Alissa is a historian and they cover women that society has deemed “crazy”. It is fascinating! I love that they delve deep into the truth and have really done the research. I think you might enjoy it! (The one they did on Judy Garland was especially amazing!)

@@AlexaDonne my recent "WTF?!?!" realization was that Michael from Grease 2 is married to Tabitha from Passions (Juliet Mills) and THEN that she was Haley Mills' sister. Grease 2 is the gift that keeps on giving.

I just picked up 3 new books, and have 3 memoirs but now I want to read these. :) Love Krakuer’s writing and this new novels sounds juicy. And I loved loved Sharon in Cagney and Lacey. Yes, I’m that old. And I was so happy to see her return in Queer as Folk! Definitely adding her book to my TBR list. The Whistleblower kind of reminds me of a recent article in the NY Times about Eboni Major at Bulleit Bourbon. (Note read the comments not just the article) Another must read for me, and I haven’t seen the Uber series yet. Thanks so much for the reviews. full disclosure I’m married to a former Bulleit.

Love it!! Always enjoy these reading wrapups, but I tend to lean toward nonfiction so always especially love hearing your thoughts and recommendations on them. I've been seeing the House of Gucci book around bookstores, and been curious to check it out. Some of the comments on Susan Fowler's childhood from 'Whistle Blower' put me in mind of both the books 'Educated' and 'Hillbilly Elegy'; they're both gripping memoirs with commentary on family dynamics and growing up in a limiting environment, and the themes of 'Educated' and the unreliability of memory I found particularly striking. Those are both hugely popular and I wouldn't be surprised if you had read them already, but if not I would definitely say they're worth checking out as far as nonfiction/memoirs go.

Idk if you read it or not, but you may like the seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo! It's a fictional story about an actress during the 1950s and her (many) adventures with love, and her experiences as a Latina in Hollywood

The Bonfire of the Vanities by Tom Wolfe is a great book. The movie is a bad adaptation. I love The Devil's Candy! Another book detailing a disastrous film shoot is Final Cut: Art, Money, and Ego in the Making of Heaven's Gate, the Film That Sank United Artists by Steven Bach. As for autobiographies, one of my favorites is Yes I Can: The Story of Sammy Davis, Jr. When I was in my 20s I read a lot of Marilyn Monroe biographies. I remember liking Marilyn Monroe: The Biography by Donald Spoto. Happy reading!

hey Alexa I have a question! Would you recommend revising a novel by parts, or finishing the whole draft before going in with revising? I can't help but keep going backwards when I write, like I can't progress until I feel the previous parts are acceptable and properly set up the future parts. Thanks!

The Sharon Gless book sounded good until you mentioned the chapter on losing her mom to cancer. I lost my mom to cancer and i cant go there. I read crying at H Mart and i sobbed through that book. I can never do that again.
@AlexaDonne
@AlexaDonne 2 года назад
Sharon didn't lose her mom to cancer, AFAIK--that was me mentioning my IRL experience. In Gless's book it's a chapter on friends she's lost to cancer, rather. It's easily skippable, as well, if you prefer--it's one self-contained chapter, short, about four friends. I personally found it a really beautiful chapter, and cathartic for me personally. It's not so much about the cancer itself (no blow-by-blow), but about her amazing friends. The chapter ends on "fuck cancer," which made me smile. Hope that helps!

YES TEAM IVY 100%. The most baffling part of that show is any universe where Ivy was not obviously the only choice to play Marilyn?! Though I was totally convinced they were going to end up doing a new book with Karen playing Norma Jean in the first half and Ivy playing Marilyn in the second but oh well. Super excited to see what they do with the IRL musical plans.
