Warren McClure The previous iPad was still $329. They cut the price by thirty dollars, but’s still quite a bit more expensive than what a lot of schools can afford to see results from the purchase. I worked for a company that partnered with a number of youthbuilds in California, and they all use chrome books or cheap Windows netbooks. They weren’t good, but the youthbuilds could afford to lease them. They couldn’t do that with iPads, and they still can’t.

chromebooks and lower end windows laptops are still around that price range. public schools get grants specifically for technology. private schools have a lot more money to play with. there are a lot of factors that come into play, and while i'm sure your anecdote isn't irrelevant i'm sure it doesn't apply everywhere

a Just on Google’s Chromebook page, I counted eight computers priced at $249 and lower and go as low as $179. And these are just newer Chromebooks. I’m not worried about well-off private schools or fortunate public schools. When I left that company, which was a small company in itself, most Youthbuilds were using cheap Windows netbooks and we’re slowly transitioning to Chromebooks. That said, they were all leasing the computers from my company, and each Youthbuild had about twenty-five computers for the entirety of each respective school. Granted, some of them were small and had maybe two classes, but others were full-on schools sharing fifty cheap computers among all the students. My point is these schools can’t afford iPads, and these are literally the kids who need the most help. Other schools in lower-income neighborhoods likely won’t get grants. You can say they’re around the same price if you’d like, but fifty iPads cost $15,000, and they still need keyboards at least. Fifty $179 Chromebooks is about $9,000, and they all come with keyboards. And that’s not even the school discount. You or I could buy the Lenovo 678G-P3 Pro 2 (made-up model) for $179. Schools may even get a discount from that price.

Helmet it seems to me that most people start off hating Apple products because they can’t afford them. And that’s a real problem because it means the most privileged will get to use the best products focused in education. Apple’s prices are way too high, and even with accessories being optional, an iPad isn’t a complete tool without them. Most established curriculums have keyboards in mind, and typing on a virtual keyboard may be more fun in some respects, but it’s not as accountable or efficient. If Apple wants to change the world, they’re going to have to impact a large majority of schools. Maybe they have a plan to lower prices further in the future, innovation shouldn’t come at such a steep price in this era where chrome books are as cheap as they are and do most of the basics. I have all Apple everything, btw. I just care about schools with much smaller budgets.

+Helmet I appreciate your viewpoint. You want to give Microsoft some credit as well. The entire Surface line of products are beautiful and humanized devices like that of Apple. A lot of people buy Apple products and couldn't care one bit about minimalism, which is Apple's aesthetic. Also, do not let their marketing influence your buying decision. This is something Apple does extremely well.

Matthew Gonzales, private schools' tuition fees are usually over $400/yr in my region so I don't think parents would have that much of an issue with buying an iPad. Not to mention how much it would help the kids in the long run.

Why would you pay apple for iCloud when for that money you can have office 365 with 1TB of cloud storage... Also google gives you more free storage as well... Apple rents Google cloud for icloud.... So you are paying apple for something that google gives for free.. Apple is just the middle man..

I agree with you. Against chromebooks, yes, the iPad does have a chance. Against laptops and PCs, it's a toy in comparison and a complete joke. Don't get me wrong. I do use an iPad for schoolwork for taking class notes and lectures. It's great on that aspect (notability is perfect). But in terms of documents, presentations, excel work, or any advanced work, a computer has the technology to accomplish a lot more and multitask. The iPad is simply good for basic or general tasks while being portable. Of course, this is my opinion. Do not treat it as a fact.

Actually Apple has has a long history of been one of the only big tech companies that have been for protecting our privacy. I'm not sure if your remember when the FBI were trying to back door the San Bernardino shooters iPhones so they could scrub the shooters phone for evidence and Apple wouldn't give them a backdoor into their hardware. They've even urged congress to introduce regulations on what companies can harvest form their customers, it's why some of their apple designed apps are not as robust as Googles because they aren't trying to harvest your data so they can give you "better experiences" or sell it to the highest bidder. That's not too say that Apple isn't infallible and haven't had their share of security flaws and I wouldn't trust any tech company as an act of good habit for what i decide to share, cause once its out in the open it's ripe to be hacked, stolen, sold, and given to/by anyone.

This generation needs to adapt continuously upcoming technology to their productivity. For example, reading real books or ebooks doesn't have much difference in learning. Though, it is our responsibility to make sure our children be responsible for their gadgets on a daily basis.
