I've been a tile user for a few years with various different types... THis is because I'm hopeless and used to lose keys and my wallet at home, panic that they weren't at home, then replace cards etc only to find my wallet again. The biggest thing with them is the mixture of form factors (including the few styles with a keyring/lanyard loop) make having an option for a wallet, keys, tech, and several come with self adhesive pads so they can be stuck under or in things. You wouldn't know there was a tile on the bottom of my laptop, or my wallet. They even offer bright pattern tags which look more like a keyring so blend in. Love the idea of the apple network providing constant coverage if they're in lost mode, but man they're ugly. I wouldn't want that thing with the weird loop on my keys, it's too big and bulky. If they slimmed them down and made different shapes for different applications, I'd be more tempted.

Yeah, I totally get that, but for sure this is their V1 product. Hopefully once they get these out there, they'll start to come up with other versions like Tile. That would be ideal!

It also lacks an altimeter. So if you lost an item in a multi story building it wouldn't tell you what floor it was on just that it was in the building

Most practical take on air tags I have seen. These would be cool if I was in that ecosystem, but I think the accessory pricing would trigger my inner cheap side and I would never buy them.

BATTERY LIFE: I bought (and activated) four ATs in July of 2021. It is now December of 2022 and I had to replace one battery in September, and one this month. The other two have not yet shown up as being low. So at least Apple's claimed year (and maybe up to 18 months) of battery life can be expected from these. Two of these go into town a lot while two of them are on the road far less often. I suspect that these "report" their location whenever an iPhone comes into range, so if you live where they can report all the time your battery life will be shorter as it will be in use more often. My two that are still going strong after 17 months stay at home most of the time, and I live in a small town where most of the locals have cheap android phones. In town, it is more affluent, so there are far more expensive iPhones in use, and I think that affects battery life.

Thanks for this informative video. If I put an Air Tag in my car and forget where I parked it (can be a few blocks away from my apartment), will the Tag's location automatically show up on my iDevice? Folks with iPhones walk around my neighbourhood all the time including the various spots where I park my car. I don't want to deliberately make the Tag in my car beep as obviously I would not hear it from a block away.

Thank you for your clear video instruction. I have been trying to put the back on for about 45 minutes with no success. I shall try later on, then if not, I will take it to a jeweller to put back on for me. My thoughts on Apple Air Tags (I run an all Apple environment) I would highly recommend people not but this product. In my experience, being one month, it sometimes works. And in a tracking device which can be mission critical sometimes reliable is unacceptable. I am stuck with my Air Tags as they are a present from my wife and monogrammed, otherwise I would have chucked them in the bin and used my old Tile which has never let me down despite a range of challenging environments. Air Tags are a beautiful looking device, but I have found they just don’t work even in a totally Apple environment,

This is actually what I'm thinking! OR, there could be a huge market for a "decoy AirTag". Like $5 for a piece of plastic that looks exactly like an AirTag. You put that in a key chain and hang it on the outside of your bag, then hide a real AirTag inside! Genius!

Thanks for the informative video. I received a set of AirTags for Christmas. I set one up and put it in my son’s jacket so I could see where he went on a snow machine ride. I thought it had gps and would track where he went. Nope. He off he went on the snow machine, and the AirTag showed the last location, which was where he started from - our house! I was pretty disappointed. I’m sure it works great in a city, but not so much in the wilds of northwestern Ontario. And for the record, my son knew about the tag in his jacket 👍

Yeah, unfortunately for that use case, it's not GPS based. It's relying on pinging iPhones for its location. So if your son had an iPhone on him as well, then you could search for the AirTag at any point and it would show you its current location, but for tracking, you would be better off just using the iPhone in his pocket and something like Strava to track his rides👍

Base on what you describe in the "Stalker proof" section, it would also alert a thief that an air tag is "stalking" them and so notify them that the item stolen is tracked, is that correct? if true than the tag is basically useless to track stolen items.

Just bought one to use on an upcoming overseas trip. I plan on using a piece of carry-on luggage, but have read that if the overhead bins fill up, an airline may take your suitcase and check it. Question: Can I simply place the Air Tag INSIDE my luggage, or does it have to be in one of those holders and attached outside?

I work for a company that lets customers borrow and return items. We have been looking into a way of tracking items that have not been returned. Do you think we need some sort of disclaimer on the items so customers do not get alarmed that their phone notifies them they are being tracked? Also, does the AT send constant warning of being tracked or just the 1?

Well i seen a guy remove the speaker. Its a magnetic little thing that pops right out! Thats brilliant. After removing the battery theres 3 little clips if you use like a small razer you can pop it right out and remove the speaker. This is perfect for people who are hiding the airtag against a thief! Let them search rather then hear and remove quickly!

1. By not having the loop attached, it makes it easier to hide the AirTag in your bag or under your skatboard. 2. Hold your breath and count to 10. By the time you are done, Amazon will have a TON of cheap third-party accessories to buy and attach to your AirTag.

Whats the difference between tracking someone and them stealing your item? Would their phone still tell them a air tag is traveling with them? If my car gets stolen i dont want that person to know its there. Im guessing it’s something to do with lost mode at this point.

Yeah, so the pop-up for that situation seems to only kick in after awhile of the AirTag following that person and it doesn't pop up at all if you've switched the AirTag to lost mode. So if you lose your thing, flip on that "Lost Mode" quick!

Did you actually try out the anti-stalking feature? Some people suggested that a thief could designate the current AirTag location as their "home" and detect the AirTag immediately. I'm guessing Apple was smart enough to require the AirTag to move a little bit and wait some period of time before notifying thieves that there is an AirTag going to their "home" but I have no evidence to back that intuition up. Also I'd be intrigued if the AirTag UWB precision locator works if you drop it in say a few inches of muddy pond water. Realistically, I'm not that worried about thieves finding and disabling AirTags. They most likely are dumping the laptop bag/backpack as soon as possible and just keeping the stuff inside. Even for a bike, I "think" most thieves just try to get rid of the bike asap... and not bother with trying to disable any trackers (as a samsung/htc/tile tracker has no such anti-stalking feature). Of course I'm not a veteran criminal, so maybe I'm wrong. Personally, if I were putting an AirTag on my bike... I would try to DIY disable the speaker (it's not like I need that feature to find an entire bike) or put it in a foam/soundproof container and stick it into the seat post or fork tube. In general, theft recovery isn't my personal use case for item trackers.

I do not know how true this is, but I heard it take a few days for the person to be notified. And also the AirTag has to be put in “lost mode”. I did test this out I placed my AirTag in my mothers bag during a visit and left it with her for a few hours while she ran errands and she never got notified. However I did not put it in lost mode. But what I did do is see if it showed a current location and it did and continued to update its location on her errands.

I bought two key chain holders, one was a Belkin plastic one for me and the other was an Apple leather one for my wife. I wanted hers to look good. I have a side pocket on my wallet that is where the third one goes and the fourth one goes in my wife's purse; so no other holders were necessary to purchase. The accessory market will be a boon for both Apple and third parties, hence the reason for not having a "hole" attachment point on the Apple air tag.

Takes a few hours to alert someone that an AirTag is following them, so the person would need to be in your car for awhile. UNLESS they have an iPhone and you go to their "Home" marked in their iPhone. That will then alert them that an AirTag has followed them home. Apple prioritizes anti-stalking over anti-theft👍

As if someone has stolen my car. Foe example if I am at work and I have my car parked in the lot and someone steals my car, can I be notified that way?

Actually, I think if you think your item has been stolen, you should not put the airtag into lost mode. Lost mode will alert anyone in proximity to the item (including potentially the thief). You should just use passive tracking

@@franc4237 these are just my terms but I would say “active” tracking is when you set it to lost mode or have it play the chime. Passive is the other state, when it is sharing its location quietly with nearby Apple devices

Very wise advice, having just purchased some more "vaults" just wasn't making sense to me to have these in plain sight were someone to walk off with my laptop bag in my oops left my truck unlocked when I stop at the liquor store. See a whole new challenge here trying to outsmart the nefarious type, came up with something clever enough. Almost hope it gets stolen to see it work someday :)

The question is, if some one takes your whatever object with an air tag in it, and they have an iPhone; would their iPhone tell them that someone else’s air tag is following them? So if they see the air tag or they don’t they are still notified that there is an air tag?

Assuming a thief does make off with an air tagged item, Won’t the airtag make a sound when their iOS device comes near it? Is there some way to disable the airtag from making any sounds when it’s in lost mode, (unless it’s near your own iOS device)?

I was thinking of opening the airtag and disconnecting the built in speaker. there will be no chime for the theft but their phone will still get the notification if they have an iphone

11:40 - I removed the pcb on mine and wired under my laptop motherboard.. (also wired it into the pc speakers and battery) If someone steals the laptop, they'll have a hard time disabling the tracker.

So to your point when I travel I always have two AirTags one on the outside for the Angel who is going to be the one to go OH this poor person who left there suitcase let me scan the AirTag and see who lost there bag... Then I have an AirTag in my locked suitcase somewhere where no one can find easy without breaking the lock or cutting though the bag ruining the expensive bag at that but I can then track them and my bag after they rip the first AirTag off the outside bag.. I mostly hide my AirTags unless for work where I just want to see if I left my bag at work and all but when I travel or are around many people in public then I hide the AirTags or have two like I said above I can't get enough AirTags... but it depends on how I use them some cases its best like at Airports to have the AirTag on the outside of the bag so people can find your bag and hopefully be like we found your bag and AirTag as well as keeping a hidden tag in the locked bag. All in All I agree with you but it just depends on how you use the Tags but better safe then sorry having many on one item is never a bad thing.

So if this tracker was on a bike and it went missing then a thief who presumably has an iPhone can be alerted that an airbag is following them? 🤔 How will an airtag differentiate if someone put this on their car to track them or if the airtag owner put this on their own bike/car?

Smartphones are hugely disruptive to my headspace and I use a classic „burner“ phone, so *+1* on reminding people about luggage tags. I can't scan AirTags with my phone and the closest I'd be able to manage would be phoning the tag ID into Apples „Lost & Found“ line... *IF* they operated one! 🤣 On the other hand; Reading a luggage tag and phoning the number on it takes no time at all! 👍 I can't help thinking you seem to miss the main aim of the Apple ecosystem at 13:37 though... #KeepOnPaying 🍎💸😉

Just a quick clarification… u mentioned that the thief might actually be sending his own location using his iPhone .. then won’t the airtag think it is following him as the airtag is moving along with him & not with the owner! Doesn’t it then beat the purpose of tracking the thief ?

If it's in Lost Mode, it works differently in notifying the person it thinks it's following. I think once some real world use cases start flowing in, they'll need to do updates to address all of these situations. But for now, as soon as you realize your thing is lost, flip the AirTag into lost mode and the thief shouldn't get the notification👍

If someone finds your AirTag and wants to keep it for themselves, can they just take the battery out and put it back in, then pair it to their device? Or does it remember it’s paired to it’s original owner?

It has its own serial number which is registered on the find my network. The original owner would have to intentionally remove it in the find my app.

I heard someone say that if you take off and put on the battery 5 times over, it resets the whole thing and voila, the airtag is yours, now you can track all your stolen goods.. :) Not sure if this is true though. Someone with experience?

Nope, you have to release it from your account. The AirTags have serial numbers so they won't connect to a new account unless you've released it from yours👍

So the thief who stole my bag is driving away from the scene, will he get a message on his phone that says there is an itag in his car, lol. If someone steals the item , I would have to quickly go into Lost mode before his phone alerts him?

Should take a couple hours for the thief to get an alert or when the thief gets to their "home" that they have setup in their iPhone. So you'll have a bit of time to get it into Lost Mode, but you'll need to be decently quick!

Thief tracking is not what this is designed for. It's not even in their marketing. Bottom line, don't rely on this. Just be vigilant of your things, and get insurance.

When you put it in lost mode how long before it alerts someone that the AirTag is close by. My thought is if someone that has an iPhone steals my item. I activate lost mode and then they get an alert saying that an AirTag is close, they turn on the alarm, find my AirTag and throw it in a ditch keeping my item. Kind of defeats the purpose. I sort of want to see if I can disable the alarm and then hide it really really well, to the point the thief decides its not worth it and ditches the item.

I had an apple air tag on my son who is six and just started first grade. Well two days later his tag that was on a wrist band fell off. We contacted the school and no one’s turned it in. We spent hours looking for it as it was showing that it was outside the school. I turned on the ringer but my phone was ringing not the air tag. 300ft to search is a huge area . So it could be inside the school. There has to be another way to search for this darn thing. It hasn’t moved. I had times where turning on it said out of range. I am going so crazy trying to locate this darn thing. I’m almost wanting to pay $100 plus to find this darn tag. This has taught me a big lesson on the wrist bands. Next I’ll find a way so that the wrist band doesn’t come apart. I had planned to put one on my sons bike they have a cover that goes under a bike seat. I though that is great because you can’t see it. But I’m stuck not knowing when or if my first air tag is going to come back to me.

Question: Let’s say someone stole your bike or item that had your airtag attached…. Couldn’t they get a notification on their phone saying “an unknown airtag is near you” just like the victim would if someone slipped an airtag near them that wasn’t theirs? Wouldn’t that give notice to the thieves. (Assuming they owned an airtag of their own)

@@DavidManningvlog This is all correct, however, the airtag will also have informed the owner of the thief’s Home location. They can then let the police know the location even after the thief finds the tag and disables it. From the documentation, it looks like the thief will not be alerted UNTIL they reach their Home location.

NO…when you put the airtag in lost mode anyone with an iPhone can always know where it’s at if they open the Find My app. You won’t receive an immediate notification of a lost airtag but you can always check if your near one through the app. If someone did activate an airtag and put it on someone else without them knowing, it will take about 3 days for the other person to be notified that an airtag has been tracking their location. Even though 3 days is too long at least there is some type of security measure. They just need to tweak it a bit more.
