Part 1 of 2:
I love our homemade shampoo bars. It leaves our hair so soft! I found this recipe online about 5 years ago, wrote it down on an empty envelope to try later and put it in my soap file folder. I don't remember who this recipe is from to give her credit - but we LOVE this shampoo bar.
In addition to how it helps heal split ends (and prevent them) and how it leaves hair very soft without the need for conditioner, this shampoo bar also helps skin issues as well. I am a scoutmaster for the BSA and have given many bars of soap and shampoo bars away to boys and girls who have acne. Within 2 weeks of using the homemade soap and/or shampoo bars the scouts in my troop were thrilled with how much their acne cleared up. This also works for eczema too anywhere on the head or neck where the shampoo bar lather will reach. I won't say it 'cures' skin issues, but it significantly helps.
This is a cold process soap. If you are new to soapmaking, please find resources to read or videos to watch that will teach you how to make cold process soap. I have been doing this for many years and do not wear the PPE that many people feel is necessary. But I strongly suggest if you are new or uncertain about making soap, that you wear PPE and have vinegar nearby to neutralize any lye that may spill or splatter.
(Warning: if you have gray or white hair, shampoo bars of any kind will slightly to moderately yellow your hair - it is because of the oils used, they cling to your hair which is what heals your hair and makes it soft, but it also has a yellow-ish color it imparts as well - I have gray-to-white hair and I tend to use our shampoo bars several time and then use a clarifying shampoo to help remove some of the oil build up to keep the yellow color at bay. I have created a shampoo bar similar to this one that uses only clear oils and I will post a video on that soon. As you can see in this video, the oils used are anywhere from brown to yellow to clear - this is why there is a yellowish tint left behind and this builds up with each use. If you do not have white or light gray hair, you're fine using this shampoo bar, my adult children use it daily with no change to their natural hair color. I have one daughter who uses henna and indigo on her hair and she is also able to use this with no issues).
I would also like to apologize for the odd camera angles while pouring the soap into the molds - my daughter and I tend to do a strange video-dance trying to work around each other as she films and I work. On this video it was difficult for her to get a good camera angle and I had to move fast with the pouring before the soap thickened. We'll try and figure out how to do this better in the future. So my apologies!
ACV or Vinegar Shampoo Bar Recipe:
Lye solution:
12.8 oz apple cider vinegar
5 oz sodium hydroxide
Oils:
14 oz vegetable oil
7 oz coconut oil
7 oz olive oil
3.5 oz castor oil
1.6 oz cocoa butter
1.6oz sunflower oil
0.7 oz fragrance or essential oil
Enjoy!

Out of all the soaps I make, this is my family's favorite one. And it really helps acne in teens too. Hopefully you enjoy the soap too!

Hello, Can I use another oil instead of vegetable oil? And what is the superfat that you use in your shampoo bars? Please. I am new to soap making and would love to learn and make my own shampoo bars. Thank you for your recipe🙏

superfat is adding extra oil, that doesn't get saponified.

Can You use Almond oil in place of sunflower. I can't get sunflower oil here / vegetable oil did you use Crisco ? or any ? Can you also freeze the vinegar first ?
@everythinghomestead9222
@everythinghomestead9222 Год назад
Because each oil has its own density, you need to go thru a lye calculator and put in the oil you want to use - it slightly alters the amount of lye and water. But yes, you can use sunflower or ANY fat you have available - just go to the lye calculator. This is the one I use: www.the-sage.com/lyecalc/ That is also how you come up with your own recipes based on what oils you have, the liquid you want to use, etc. It generates all the amounts for you and the lye amounts. The vegetable oil I used is just 'vegetable oil' from our stores here. You can use shortening, that is also on the lye calculator so you put that oil in. Our vegetable oil is soybean oil. I don't like canola oil, it is toxic and many countries don't allow it in. Here in the US we use it for everything :( Yes, you can freeze the vinegar first if you like - you can freeze any of the liquids. Just measure it out first so you know you have exactly the amount you need. Vinegar is really nice for hair and body soap - really nice on the skin. Thank you for asking questions :) Let me know if you have any other questions! I would love to have you try this soap!!!

@@everythinghomestead9222 Thank you so much 🙂I go on the lye calculator you said and put in the Almond oil and the crisco see how it differs from the one you have. Thank you so much for answering. TY for sharing.

Sorry, just saw this - YT doesn't always alert me when someone posts a comment. Not really, the whole reason we use lye is because of the balance between oils and lye that turn it into soap. If you use less lye you don't get soap, you get goo that isn't oil or soap or lye. You can play around with the types of oils though. I would suggest lard or olive oil, something heavier than most oils. It will coat your hair well. Also, once the mixture turns into true soap and you allow it to cure for 6-8 weeks (we often cure it for over a year) there is zero lye in it. So if you're having problems with handmade soap and lye harming your hair, it hasn't been cured long enough.

If this bar is good for eczema, is it also good for psoriasis? Also, after reading your note about shampoo bars eventually yellowing gray or white hair, couldn't you use blue or purple mica to enhance gray/white hair?
@everythinghomestead9222
@everythinghomestead9222 5 месяцев назад
Yes, it would be very good for psoriasis too. The blue coloring will turn the yellowish oils to a green color - been there and done that! The only option I've found is to use a clarifying shampoo to basically strip the hair, gently, to get the oils off each strand. The oil on the strand protects the hair and also helps hold moisture in the hair, as well as help prevent and even heal splits in the hair too. But over time you get too much buildup, which shows as yellowish in white hair. Dark hair you don't notice (some of my adult kids have dark and blond hair, two sons have red). Only white hair has issues with this. I hope all that makes sense?

Hi!! By any chance do you know what is the final pH of the bar?
@everythinghomestead9222
@everythinghomestead9222 5 месяцев назад
No, I don't normally test for that. Also, each batch will be very slightly off, similar but not exactly the same. So I would need to check every single batch each time if the ph was a concern. The longer you allow it to cure, the better too...

Not to my knowledge, but if you don't want to make it 'white' you can simply leave it the creamy color of undyed or colored soap. It's pretty and I prefer it, but when I sell soap people like it white...

Do you do an acidic rinse after shampoo with this bar?
@everythinghomestead9222
@everythinghomestead9222 Год назад
No, it has the cider vinegar in it. It does feel different than using detergent shampoo - which is what all store bought shampoos are. They strip your hair of all oil, which is why conditioner is needed, to put oils back on. With a shampoo bar like this, it removes the hair and scalp oil and then replaces it with the oils you made the soap with - it will feel different, but soft. If you have white hair like me, if you don't use a clarifying shampoo 2-3 times a month, you get a yellowish buildup on your hair from the oils. I have used pure white oils like coconut, rendered rabbit fat (we raise meat rabbits), lard, castor oil, palm kernal oil, etc. If it has no yellow tint, you can avoid the yellow color on the hair. Funny how the yellow oils are cheaper than the others ;) You could use an ACV rinse if you wanted to - but no need to.

Shouldn't you be safe with lye and wear gloves and cover your arms .!
@PrettyAliceNight
@PrettyAliceNight 6 месяцев назад
I’m not sure how long you’ve been soaping but if you are doing tutorials you really should be practicing and advocating for safety. Things like wearing gloves, goggles, using the right container to mix the lye. Pyrex and glass get micro cracks and will end up shattering eventually and you have to use only certain types of plastic or the lye will eat right through it.

You do you, I'll do me. I've been soaping for a very long time and although cautious, I'm not fanatical. I'm a former ER nurse and I understand lye very well and the issues with it. I wonder how our ancestors managed to make soap for thousands of years without PPE... You can cave into the fear if you want to, but if you are careful you can easily soap all your want and never have a problem. Using PPE can actually make it more dangerous with gloves and goggles and things that get in your way and make using your soaping items easily. Feed into your own fear all you want, but don't tell other people how to live or how to do things. We all have free choice. And all the 'what if's' scenarios you could bring are simply that - what if...they rarely if ever happen. Don't like my videos, don't watch them. I'm not on here to make money like other people are, so I don't need to appease the people who freak out. I'm here to put videos up for my children and family to be able to refer to when needed...and in doing so, am sharing with anyone in the world who wants to watch too. Go scold a tree, it might care more than I do.

@@everythinghomestead9222 Wow what a response! I’ve been making soap for nearly 20 years and liking to be safe doesn’t make me fanatical or feeding into fear. I understand if you want to do whatever you want with your soap making, especially if you are experienced, but telling beginners to do unsafe things seems irresponsible at best and downright dangerous at worst. Simply pointing out that it is a good idea to acknowledge safe practices to beginners doesn’t mean I was freaking out or scolding you. I’m not sure why my comment triggered you so badly but that wasn’t my intention.

I do say in the video that people can use PPE if they want to, and that I don't, and I leave it at that. I'm not teaching people how to use PPE, I'm teaching them how to make soap. It is a simple thing to make and shouldn't have such a heavy scare weight put on it - too many people think it is so dangerous to make soap they won't even try it. Let them see how easy it actually is. As for my reaction, you came across very strongly and yes, you were scolding and attacking. Read the first sentence in your reply to me. Written text does not convey the tone the author writes in. The words and how they are put together do. Reread the first sentence of what you wrote, and tell me that wasn't a verbal attack on me... I stand by my video and how I presented it, and I stand by defending myself to whoever comes across as attacking me from the very first sentence she replied with. Soaping doesn't need to be scary and fearful, it should be fun and more people should try it. @@PrettyAliceNight

Nope, you do you and I'll do me. Soapmaking is NOT that scary. I'm a former ER nurse so I know the dangers in lye, but it is nowhere as scary as people make it out to be. We not only homestead, we homeschool too. My kids have been involved in everything their whole life. My kids when they were young could run circles around you. Back off and do your own thing and let the rest of us live life. Don't share your fear with others just because you can type on a computer...
