* PLEASE NOTE: this bar is best used with an acidic rinse afterwards, as it helps to condition your hair and keep it strong and healthy. Our scalps and hair follicles like a slightly acidic Ph. Soap can't be soap unless its Ph is alkaline, so while this bar will clean your hair wonderfully, your follicles will be much happier if you follow up with a slightly-acidic rinse. In our shower, we like to use apple cider vinegar diluted in water. If you prefer a complete shampoo, please see our new & improved solid shampoo bars, linked here: • Making our Clarifying ... *
Today we make apple cider vinegar (ACV) hair-washing bars using the cold process soap making method! Lots of people use apple cider vinegar for hair because it's said to be good for your hair (especially for shine). We include it in our hair-washing bars (cold process)! The video includes weighing oils, mixing lye solution into melted oils, the pour, the cut and the bevelling for an extra satisfying soap making video!
We love soap cutting and we've heard you do, too, so we're trying to include as much of the making of the solid hair soap as possible. Basically, all the stuff you'd expect for soap making (cold process, that is)!

Nice reuse of the applesauce containers - I was using my kids' single serving cereal pots for some of my excess soaps. Not the prettiest but they work well for personal use (and in my beginning stages I need to test everything I make). I do plan to make some mini wooden molds for my overflow though - just so it is sellable or able to be made into samples.

Hey, folks! We've had some questions about what to use as a rinse after you wash your hair with this bar. You can use a simple apple cider vinegar rinse, which is just 1 part ACV to 4 parts water. So for example, 1 cup ACV and 4 cups water if you want to make up enough for a while. It's super easy if you store it in a squeeze bottle-you can keep one from around the home (empty dish soap soap, for example), clean it well and reuse it. Once you've washed your hair, you can just squeeze some of the rinse onto your scalp and your hair will love it!

Whats the % superfat that is used in this recipe. And would that be ok if we use any other type of vinegar of some other fruit? Thanks
@TubbyTabbySoaps
@TubbyTabbySoaps 3 года назад
We didn't use any superfat in this one because there's mango butter and it has unsaponifiables anyway. The lather will be less if you superfat more than you have to.

Hello, I’m new to this and having a hard time getting my bars Hard! I’m only using Butters, could that be the reason?
@TubbyTabbySoaps
@TubbyTabbySoaps 3 года назад
Thanks for watching, Lakeisha! Hmmm...I've never heard of soap with only butters, but the conventional wisdom is that we should aim for about 40% hard oils to about 60% liquid oils for the best results. This is because butters and hard oils tend to have more "unsaponifiables" (fatty acids that can't turn into soap). If there is a large part of your oil that isn't turning into soap, that could be causing it, if that makes sense? I would recommend adding some liquid oils to help with that-olive oil is wonderfully moisturizing and also readily available. Maybe start there! If you're using butters because you're concerned about your soap being too drying, keep in mind that any superfat over about 3% or 5% will create a really moisturizing bar. So you can add liquid oils and allow the lye to make that oil into soap for cleansing, and then you'll still have lots of moisturizing power left from the butters that don't saponify. Hope this helps! :)

hello! is it alright to omit mango butter and just increase the amount of olive oil? or is it necessary?
@TubbyTabbySoaps
@TubbyTabbySoaps 3 года назад
It will change the bar, as each oil has different properties it gives to soap. But if you decide to do it, just be sure to run it through a lye calculator so you get the right amount (mango butter needs a different amount of lye than olive oil)! Thanks for watching! ☺

@drclaudineelkhouryelkarak3152 3 года назад
What superfat should a shampoo bar have? In your case do you calculate a lower superfat than usual accounting for the acidity of the ACV???
@TubbyTabbySoaps
@TubbyTabbySoaps 3 года назад
We use a 0% superfat because this bar is to clean the oils from the hair and we don't want to add oils back in. (As you mention, the ACV might consume a bit of lye, but it's quite weak/diluted and doesn't affect it too much.) But we do recommend using a conditioner afterwards or at least an acidic rinse for the best hair health. While commonly confused, oils and conditioner do two different things. Oils moisturize the hair and conditioner protects the hair with a barrier. Putting those together with shampoo reduces the benefits of both the shampoo and the conditioner or moisturizer, so it's best to do those separately. Hope that helps! 😊

Hi Marina! Canola oil is also called "rapeseed oil", so maybe this will help. If you can't find any canola or rapeseed oil, you must use a lye calculator because each oil consumes a different amount of lye. You can choose another oil and calculate the correct amounts using the lye calculator. I hope this helps, and thank you for watching our video!

what's the experience in using this shampoo? is it make the hair soften or greasy? is it causing dandruff or not?
@TubbyTabbySoaps
@TubbyTabbySoaps 3 года назад
I haven't heard of a shampoo causing dandruff before, so I don't know what you mean about that. However, I've heard from our customers that there's lots of lather! It's best for those who wash their hair often, or who have drier hair. It is not super clarifying (as in, it will clean the hair gently but not take lots of grease out if you have oilier hair). It's more on the moisturizing side. Hope that helps! 🙂

Why do you have to use a ACV wash after using this soap when it has ACV in it?
@TubbyTabbySoaps
@TubbyTabbySoaps 2 года назад
Great question! Because the chemistry of soap completely transforms the ingredients into a new substance (ie. soap!), the original properties of the ingredients change somewhat. For example, ACV is slightly acidic on its own, but because we’re adding a super alkaline substance (ie. lye!) to it, the PH completely changes by the end. The finished soap is alkaline, which opens up the hair follicle and leaves the hair shaft very vulnerable and susceptible to breakage and other damage. Hair needs a slightly acidic PH to close the follicle again to protect and smooth our hair. Unfortunately, there is no way to make soap slightly acidic so that our hair likes it and it closes the follicles. This is because soap is by definition alkaline (PH 8-9 minimum), and if it gets to a lower PH it kind of…falls apart? (Like it isn’t soap anymore, just a blob of mess. I’m not sure how to describe it better than that, I’m afraid!) So while this soap will clean your hair, you’ll want to make sure to follow it up with something a little acidic, like an ACV rinse, so that your hair follicles close and your locks are protected. 🙂 For more info on this, we do have a Q+A on the channel where we answer this question because we get it a lot! Feel free to check it out! And thanks for watching! ☺️

@TubbyTabbySoaps

This one tests a bit alkaline, around 9. Because of this, it's good to use a vinegar rinse afterwards, as that closes the hair follicle to keep it strong and happy. 🙂
