Man, the competition in the computer market is so good now! We have Apple pushing performance/watt, AMD pushing multi threaded efficiency, and Intel pushing single core power. This competition is absolutely epic for the consumer!

Until the new amd come out, Intel is king with the addition of ddr5. The new 12th Gen i9 is ridiculous nothing really touchs it at the moment in your normal consumer market but amd will be dropping this summer!

Intel isn't truly pushing single core performance, well depending on how you look at it... they do this by enlarging displacement, yes single core performance is best but if you look at how much power they use to get those figures their single core performance is actually quite terrible, performance per watt compared to AMD is bad, compared to Apple silicon it's terrible.

AMD : Laughing in Zen4 ( Ryzen 9 7950X boosts upto 5.8GHz Single Core and 5.5GHz All 16 Cores out of the box, as confirmed by some AMD person in an interview and the info is on some channel called GamerMeld ) Also, Intel CPUs use way too much power for that little boost in performance. According to tests, Intel's efficiency cores use almost as much power as AMD's Zen3 Performance cores.

Anthony's video demonstration has grown on me. His "less animated approach than Linus" was a bit slow for me, but now I prefer his delivery for more non-live product videos (videos where the product is not available and is yet to announced). All in all can't wait for more videos from Anthony.

Linus's delivery works for when something should excite you (or anger you if someone screwed up to a comical extent), Anthony's delivery works for when you're more picky and need all the finer details that a more average consumer may not benefit off of knowing.

The main issue with the M2 MacBook Air is pricing, at least here in the Eurozone. It looks like a nice machine, but it is far too expensive for what you get and if you spec it up only slightly, you get very close to the price of an entry level 14.2" MacBook Pro. In a lot of cases it will then make more sense getting the latter.

I've watched 5 other WWDC 2022 analysis videos today and I loved that Anthony focused particularly on the software side of things as most of the topics covered by the other videos were very focused on the M2 Air and other hardware related buzz. Thank for covering the all the small incremental but pertinent OS changes LTT!

I've always wanted a digital whiteboard I could use with a nice device like an iPad. But being able to do it for a meeting from home and everyone can draw and add to the brainstorm/meeting is perfect. I work in film and when we are writing as a group for a new production, this will definitely help. Or even when we are just getting idea for storyboarding. I just haven't bought an iPad since 2011.

There are already plenty of other whiteboard solutions out there like Microsoft Whiteboard, Google Jamboard and Zoom Whiteboards, but it is nice Apple will be offering one too. I think in a work setting though, people are more likely to be in the Microsoft or Google software and services ecosystem. Similar to the iWork suite, sure, people may use it at home, but at work or school people use Microsoft Office or Google Docs.

M1/2 would be far more interesting if it wasn't tied to the Apple ecosystem. Imagine you could only buy an AMD if you also had to get their OS in their pre-made systems. Would be far less exciting all of the sudden.

I didn't get one thing though: did they put a new software in iPad that allowed these tricks with shared screen and multilayered stack of apps in background, or they are going to put M2 in tablets and these features are not going to be available on old M1?

From previous iPad OS updates we can assume that most of the software only features will be coming to all iPads that can handle them performance wise. So, multilayered stacks will probably come to all still supported iPads, but the external display stuff is M1+ only because it probably depends on some features of the M1 chip.

I love this guys great presentation style He is clearly very knowledgeable yet always shows himself to be patient with his coworkers (ie Linus). I wish he had helped Linus with the wifi garage door operator conversion. Honestly Linus, that install was really confusing. The point is it was great content though. Perhaps a second channel where a less dramatic bit useable how-to is posted.

To be fair, they’re not exactly using off the shelf RAM in these SoC’s - it’s not the same spec as the “rubbish” (relatively speaking) that you’d put in an AMD or Intel machine. The same goes for the SSD’s that they’re including - they’re giving you _very_ high performing components that you couldn’t do if it weren’t on the same piece of silicon as the CPU/GPU.

“Apple doesn’t usually announce hardware at WWDC”, except for the Mac Pro and Pro Display XDR in 2019, the iMac Pro/MacBook & Pro/iPad Pro/HomePod in 2017, and announcing the ARM transition in 2020. It’s basically 50/50 at this point.

the only thing that could make ios 16 better is giving us a fully customizable EQ for iTunes instead of the presets or a system wide EQ so you can keep the same sound through different media (i.e. YT, SoundCloud and movie streaming apps)

Apple Music in general needed updates. Although most big Apple Music updates seem to come in iOS point releases throughout the year. I like Apple Music, but it is still behind Spotify in playlists and its recommendation algorithm. Plus we are still well overdue a complete update to iTunes with lossless and Atmos support at the very least.

@@mistymu8154 yeah I was super excited when lossless was brought to Apple Music, I don’t care much for the atmos because I don’t use Air Pod pros or maxs just the normal ones, and a few audiophile grade headphones, and I don’t look for new music through recommendations and playlists so I can’t speak on that aspect, but I generally agree apple is far behind on its music platform but I’m sure it’d be the same if Spotify was making different tech besides an app

For several years now, I have been saying that the road to higher performance is larger caches AND higher main memory bandwidth. If your main memory is "on chip", even if it is not on the same die, no one will be able to compete. Kind of like when Seymour Cray designed a computer with shorter wires ! Apples biggest problem is waiting for 3rd party software to catch up.

A bit surprised that they haven’t added AV1 hardware decode/encode to M2, at least according to the diagram released so far. If the rest of the industry adopts it in a couple of years, as seems to be the desire, it could have a negative effect on M1/M2 devices if decode has to be done in software.

Apple silicon can already decode AV1 and VP9 but not encode.

@@aninditabasak7694 They don't have hardware accelerated AV1 decoding afaik. Shouldn't be a huge problem for ~1080P-1440P decoding (my i7-8700 is capable of that without a frame dropped). The panels native resolution though might be too much for it.

@@markjacobs1086 In chromium based browser the AV1 videos on youtube are shown as hardware accelerated, so I guess the M1 video decoder has this feature (Intel also have it in their integrated graphics since some years)

Probably because M2 is based on A15 (so says an Anandtech article) and A15 also doesn't have AV1 decode. Shouldn't be a problem because M1 can software decode while sipping reasonable power at 1080p. 4K is more power demanding but if thats the case streaming services will send you h264(avc1) or vp9 to make use of the HW decode of your device. Having said that, i hope AV1 decode is at least on the A16.

They're somehow making squillions from gaming, regardless. @harish 0398 safari does, but it doesn’t support some key interfaces like install prompts and push notifications. Also not allowing 3rd party browsers implement either. A lot needs to be done on their side to improve it.

They did the same with Apple Pay. The underlying tech is the same contactless payment system everything else uses, but they put an extra super user friendly and incredibly secure and easy to implement layer on top. It's now the most commonly used contactless payment system in every country it exists in (bank/credit cards not included of course) by a HUGE margin. Google seem to have given up on whatever the hell they're calling their contactless payment system right now by constantly reinventing the wheel and making it square with the last iteration. Apple Pay is basically the generic term for contactless, or close to it, like iPod was the generic term for MP3 player for so long.

while that would be great... Apple would only do something like that if they can force it to be App Store exclusives. They get their 30% cut of all iPhone and iPad games. If they spent time and money for Mac gaming, then they can be circumvented and lose their cut. They care much much more about maximizing profit than making a good product.

That would be great, but for now MoltenVK is good enough if someone doesn't want to write a Metal backend. However, understandably Apple doesn't want to put their eggs in the Vulkan basket since there are a lot of features that Vulkan just doesn't support that Metal does. Plus, Metal is easier to use than Vulkan. At the very least I doubt they'd officially support Vulkan before Vulkan adds those missing features.

@@MickayG There is lots of actual competitive pressure. Whose chips are they not using instead of their own? Every Mac sale is a lost sale for an intel CPU or an AMD GPU or both. Apple sells millions of Macs per year that used to use expensive intel chips and AMD GPUs in upper configurations. Intel especially is hurting here.

I'm excited about passkeys. I don't have a mac or anything, but it'd be great if the device you're using can use its device login credentials to do passwords/MFA/whatever at the time you start using the device, then use that identity verification across as many apps/services as possible without having to redo verification again and again.

@@C0deH0wler the average number of miles per car crash is 522000, according to the iihs. Tesla autopilot has an average of 1.59 million miles per car crash. Meaning the current state of autopilot is almost 3x as safe as the average human driver. This will only continue to get better as time goes on. Self-driving is the future of cars and nothing you say will change that. Airplanes have been largely self-operated for many years now. You don't seem to be complaining about them.

Android really has nothing to offer anymore. Iphones are just miles ahead in both hardware and software. The only thing Android has is the possibility to install external APKs. But as a tradeoff many Android manufacturers ship their phones with bloatware (=spyware) preinstalled.. I have used Androids my whole life, but recently switched to iOS and never looked back.

The ability to download data in the background would be a great addition for app developers that do in app asset downloads; currently your app has to be active to pull additional data, which is a pain for users. I couldn't find a reference to a Background Downloads API though. The closest thing I found seems to have existed for a while and may not be for mobile. Does anyone have a link to it being mentioned?

@@yyuuiko I'm assuming they mean this extends the functionality so that you can continue downloading without the app being active. iOS heavily restricts what your apps are allowed to do when they aren't the current app, which can result in a poor UX if there is a lot of required data to download. Ideally, you'd be able to go use other apps while the download progressed in the background.

2:40 - It has been addressed elsewhere that DDR5 finally allows for non-power-of-2 chips. It's still a dual-64-bit-channel design, with two physical memory chips, it's just that those chips no longer have to be exact 4/8/16/32 GB each chip. The 24 GB models use two 12 GB chips in dual-channel configuration.

Apple is getting smart. Making certain options like this available for other developers is the BEST thing to do. The community typically knows what they want and when they want additional features apple may not be able to provide someone will think about it and make it.

Yeah. I think they are listening more to the feedback of the people. But I also think they are focusing more on a general audience and making accesible features you "could" do earlier with windows or android, but you don't have to be a thinker anymore. That and the deep integration between their devices that allows them things like use the iphone camera with iMacs so seamlessly. Don't think any other company can compite with that currently.

What made me originally think of it is Apple. Their M1 and soon to be M2 chips are amazing compared to other chips, but Apple wont likely ever give those up. Tons of positives and negatives, no doubt. Whether it should happen or not. The fact of massive universal technology would be crazy in terms of progress, putting everything else realistic aside.

The new MacBook Air most likely will be the moment i transition to Mac OS for my laptop needs. I’m fed up with windows on laptops. My workstation/studio/gaming pc will keep running windows and my current laptop runs Linux atm, but the lacking app support doesn’t make that ideal atm. I have a MacBook for work and switched to iPhone this year (small phone gang) and love the interconnectivity between the two. Love to have that in my personal ecosystem as well

If you have a MacBook (i use the M1 air 8core fun one) it's great but having like 2 chrome tabs open makes the memory like useless, don't get me wrong its still fast and when I video edit really good on speed compared to my old Windows, but if you're mainly working in chrome go for bigger memory (8GBs Is useless)! Apple iPhones are pretty decent, Android also is, not getting into that fun stuff. The ecosystem is good, but if it's a family on the one Apple ID account omg handoff is the worst thing ever made!

@@Kami_YT I'm the only one using Apple in my family and since my wife is not interested in these kind of things and my kids are still in diapers I'll be fine for the foreseeable future. When I upgrade I want to go for something that I can use for a long time. My laptop gets light use and rarely needs to do complicated things. I need something that's portable and comfortable to use on my lap. Getting at least 16GB of RAM is what I'm aiming for. I can magage with 8 atm, but upgrade needs to be an actual upgrade to be viable. My current laptop is still fine, so I'll wait until I either actually need a better performing laptop or when this thing decides to give up. I think the latter is still a long ways off, but we'll see!

I couldn't agree more with the first paragraph. The Windows operating system has started to get on my nerves, with explorer literally crashing every 10 minutes and not being able to type in the start menu for whatever reason. Windows literally cannot do simple tasks and I'm sick of that.

Been using Windows since I first bought a pc, and bought a MacBook Air last fall. It’s really good, battery life is insane, can last days without ever charging. But you really have to get use to the OS. I prefer windows over macOS, windows is more customizable and open while Mac feels like close. Sure you can get a windows vm, but not that efficient. Else than that, it’s probably one of the best pc out there.

No, Apple isn't going three-channel on the M2, they specifically tell us it's a 128-bit memory bus so it's still dual-channel (using the "PC" definition of 64-bit per channel). But M2 switched to LPDDR5, and while all DDR1-DDR4/LPDDR1-4X memory chips standard has ONLY ever included defintiions for "power of 2" sized (IE 1/2/4/8/16/32/... Gb) memory chips, DDR5/LPDDR5X specification includes an intermediate size half-way between each power-of-two step (IE 1.5x). Micron has an extremely good website making it easy to see what they have in production and we can see that they have volume (IE mass-delivery to entities like like Apple or Samsung) production of 96/64/48/32/16 Gb (not 24Gb?) LPDDR5 chips and an 128Gb variant is already in "sampling", all these are in x64 configuration (meaning one chip per channel corresponds to 1-DIMM-per-channel). So the 24GB M2 likely uses two 64-bit wide 96 Gb LPDDR5 chips, one per channel. 2*96 Gb -> 192 Gb -> 24 GB, no trickery needed. I wouldn't rule out an 32GB M2 in the autumn given that several memory manufacturers (not just Micron) is already sampling the 128Gb LPDDR5 chips that would make that happen. Given that M2 Pro/Max/Ultra likely comes out after these 128Gb LPDDR5 chips are available I expect that the max memory configuration for M2 Pro/Max/Ultra is likely to be 64/128/256, not 48/96/192. Still short of ThreadRipper Pro/EPYC/Xeon with registered memory can do though (2-4TB!).

The newer macs can outperform a lot of windows laptops that people would otherwise be fine with gaming on. If you consider that for some industries, Macs are very important, and some people can’t afford to own both platforms, the new focus on improving gaming is actually really important! It allows those who might not have been able to game actually enjoy it. Competition allows for innovation. I very much welcome the attempt, especially considering how good the current generation of Mac has been!

OpenGL is dead. Vulkan isn't made for mobile and is controlled by people who don't need or want to do the same things Apple want to. Apple has been bitten so many times having to rely on third parties, like Nvidia who constantly screwed them over (and everyone else, who no longer works with them. Apart from Nintendo for some reason), or Intel with their failure to improve performance and power draw for so long, or OpenGL not supporting the things they needed it to on mobile. So they rolled their own, to remove reliance on anybody but themselves. You should bemoan Microsoft for not supporting it either and using their own DirectX. The point of Metal is they control it entirely and made it scale from iPhone to Mac Pro, all with the same API's. Vulkan can't do that unless you fork it, at which point you then have another standard so why even bother. Vulkan is also a gaming API, Metal does that and all the other things like ML and GPGPU/Cuda like tasks.

And even now, Apple GPUs aren't really any great for gaming. They look amazing for video rendering workloads because they have special accelerators for media workloads, but if you try the gpu in Blender then even an rtx 3050 beats it.
