I have watched countless videos on this subject and this is, by far, the best one I've come across! You just saved me time and frustration with your thorough review - I had the 14" with M1 Max and 24-core GPU in my shopping cart and now I've decided to upgrade to the 16" version. THANK YOU!!

With the transition to Apple Silicon, Apple is killing it in the laptop space. The M1 MBA released back in Nov 2020 is still far better than any other windows thin and light laptop. With these machines, they have given power users everything they need. For a work laptop, unless someone has an application that will not run on Apple Silicon, it is hard to recommend anything else right now. I really hope the PC market steps up their game this year.

Fully agreed - either get the 14" with M1 Pro, or the 16" with M1 Pro/Max (24c). Everything else is just a pain for your thermals and battery. I will go for the combo 16" with Pro, since I don't need more than 5.2TFLOPs of GPU performance and I get amazing battery life and no fan noise in return!

@@AndreHance Yeah, I'm starting to doubt Josh didn't have a lemon unit. Not to say he's a bad reviewer, but yeah, there really isn't a 14 inch or smaller laptop with this much power that doesn't get warm under load. The Asus ROG Flow x13 does, the Asus Zephyrus G14 does, the Blade 14 does, and knowing Dell/Alienware, the Alienware x14 probably does as well; even if the Alienware doesn't, the performance (especially in the GPU department) isn't the same level as the other Windows laptops.

@random viewer Says apple sheep then mentions alienware lmao. To be honest, people can buy what they want, something those opposed to apple can't quite seem to grasp. The base 14 (or the m1Air) is ample for the VAST majority of people for daily use and, here's the kicker... NOT EVERYONE IS A GAMER. It's quick, long battery life, decent webcam/mics for video calling, the screens are gorgeous for watching/consuming (as are the xps screens) and it's still around that $2000 mark which is slowly becoming the standard price for premium "things". Want to game, get a gaming laptop... nobody is stopping you from doing so. The average person spending $5000 on a laptop is pointless, nobody is denying that. And who really games THAT much when out and about? Want to game, build a PC. (Looks at alienware x17 fully specced and laughs at the near $5000 pricetag as if they're not expensive either)

Outstanding content as usual. Your experience just reinforces that there is no best machine for everything and that it really depends on your use case. As for expecting PC companies to step up, I'll believe it when I see it. The things that PC manufacturers can easily control such as better webcams and speakers they don't bother with upgrading. They can't do much with the hot processors from Intel/AMD. It will be a couple of generations, at best, before they can compete with Apple by providing a chip that's high performing, low power and generates low heat.

My mom is proud of you too! 😆☕😎 ...but seriously, after using Windows PC laptops for 30+ years, I switched to Mac, and I'm not looking back. I have the MacBook Pro 16, and it is easily the best laptop I have ever owned! I was initially worried about switching operating systems, but I was pleasantly surprised that I adapted much more quickly than I anticipated. In less than a week I was comfortable, and within a couple of weeks, it was like I had always been using Mac OS. I did buy a Dell XPS 17 at the same time, and used them both side-by-side for a couple of weeks, to test them out. I love the XPS 17 screen and design! ....but there's just no comparison. The MacBook out-preformed in every way. The battery life 🔋alone was the biggest selling point. The MacBook lasted up to 3x as long. And runs at "full power" on battery. It renders/exports my video editing projects in half the time. The XPS keyboard is good, but I swear I type twice as fast on the MacBook - LOL 😉 ....The speakers are just amazing, as well as the track pad, studio-quality mics, and HD web cam. Now, I know this is crazy, but I use the LAP-top actually ON my lap most of the time! ....No heat, no fan noise (The XPS sounded like a jet airplane when exporting video.) ....As far as the "notch", I installed a gorgeous purple-dark high-res galaxy background, and I never notice it. Not to mention the all-around quality! ....and something no one seems to mention is the new M1 MacBooks are actually "designed" to be "LAP-tops" .....There's no grill on the bottom folks! (Which I was always worried about blocking, as I use my laptops on my lap, and often just sitting on my bed!) ...Instead there are air intake slots on the outer edges, and at the screen (just genius). (I returned the XPS 17 to Dell - I really DID want to love it!) Now I can sit on my patio, laptop on my lap, with a cup of coffee ☕ and work ALL day (unplugged)... 💜 😎 🎉 Gaming is one thing, but for creatives / business users like me, until Windows PC laptops address the heat and fan-noise issues, battery life, design and quality, it's hard to recommend anything but a MacBook..... But what about the "Apple Tax"? ....Hate to burst your bubble, but the Dell XPS configured to try to compete was over $500 MORE than the MacBook! .....A Razer Blade would have been even more than that! Thanks for the great video, as always Josh! 👍🏼😎

6:38 - "it would be nice to have that slimmer lighter form factor" - personally to me - no, it wouldn't, this 5-year race for thinnest possible laptops caused so many troubles with performance... To my experience, sometimes it went to the point when I literally could not even share the screen during my meetings due to CPU throttle to 0.8 GHz, and that was on MBP 16 i9 (2019)... Insane! Thank god Apple ditched this "thin form factor" bullshit. Now I am a happy owner of a base MBP 16 M1 Pro model with 1TB storage, having zero complaints since the moment I purchased it 3 months ago.

The main problem people complain about is weight. I'm sorry, but if a 16" laptop is too heavy then there are more pressing matters at hand lol. Thin and light doesn't mean good, it usually means there are things missing that should be there.

( M1 Max 32 core 64 ram 2 terabyte storage) Ouch!... retailed at $4300 BUT, found a refurbished at the Apple refurbished site which knocked off 10% plus another 3% discount cash back on my Apple credit card helped relieve some of that financial pain! The tough decision I had was the size, however even though I travel a bit, the 16 inch is heavier, but other other factors completely override that. I have also noticed more and more bigger size machines in public areas: perhaps our tech culture is going through a "seismic paradigm shift for the bigger screen is better perspective. As someone who is a software engineer working with web & Android development, I can confidently say development on Mac or Linux is superior to Windows. Tools like Homebrew make installing & uninstalling new software so much more convenient plus Docker runs a lot smoother & faster on Mac or Linux. IntelliJ, VS Code, Android Studio, and pretty much every major IDE out there work natively on M1 Macs and thanks to the new SSD & faster processor, compile times are a whole lot shorter on my Mac compared to any Windows laptop. One hiccup I did run into is that Elasticsearch (Version 6) (a dependency of one of the projects I work on) does not run, at all, on my mac. Even through Rosetta it just doesn't work. This was fixed in a recent version of Elasticsearch but unfortunately the version my work uses is a bit old and I'm forced to use a remote server just for that single service.

@@essamal-mansouri2689 I'm only a CS students so I don't work on very advanced projects. But I can tell you my experience: I have used MacOS for all my life, but also I have used Windows+WSL the past few years (videogames on PC+didn't want to partition/dualboot). I now use Linux on my PC as i don't game anymore and i have a MBPro 13" m1, and the experience is so much better on both than on Windows for dev stuff. I haven't had many probleams with the M1 architecture being an issue for applications, only issues maybe in some apps not optimized like Matlab (last I used) that just perform worse, but you can still use them. Being able to have tools like brew / apt is amazing (you can use chocolatey on windows but it's more of a hustle imo). Also the unix os structure/cmd being similar between both is nice, i don't need to learn stupid windows cmd/ps anymore. MacOS is a nice middleground between the flexibility that Linux offers without the hustle and complications that some distros have. It's more streamlined in the sense that everyone that uses MacOS has the same base so there's no divide between users configs and you can find a lot of help and tutorials that you know will work. A very important thing related to this is that you will probably find most if not all applications that you woukd probably want to use on MacOS as compared to Linux for example where sometimes you have to compromise. Also, and this is my opinion, MacOS is the most beautiful OS, the tittlebars being small, the colors, the design lenguage... It's very cohesive and it works very well. I don't like how a lot of things work (no window snapping i.e) but with some tweaks + applications you can get comfortable. One very important distinction is when you use MacOS on a MB as a laptop vs desktop. When in laptop a lof of shortcuts are not used since most stuff can be done via gestures, which feel amazing and very natural. But this is a double edge sword as when you use it as a desktop you probably use a mouse, so this gestures are not available anymore and you have to use the keyboard shortcuts which are not very good, you can change them ofc but what i mean is that it feels very different when you're used to gestures. Now in regards to the ecosystem, I don't use an iPhone as I don't like iOS, but I do have a 2018 iPad Pro 13", which bring it to Uni as well as my MBPro13 to take handwritten notes. The most amazing thing you can do is use SideCar, which makes your Ipad a secondary screen over AirPlay, and let me tell you it is amazing, you can now all of a sudden without any cables and hustles have a dual screen portable setup. Don't overlook this, it's game changer in the sense that I almost don't miss my home setup with big dual displays as with this ipad+mbpro setup i can get a lot stuff done. So yeah totally would recommend MacOS and most of all a MBPro as a laptop (it's miles ahead of the competition), but don't get to tied into the Apple Ecosystem, mostly in terms of apps.

Im an avid windows user. I'm a dev. I decided to get the 14 mac pro today, sheesh expensive, but I purchased it specifically for coding, I set up my environment twice as fast on the mac. For all around development..... i'm still undecided-- but if your a Ruby guy, yes the mac is NICE. I used a desktop mainly, but decided now that I'm making money from my hobby and can work from home, SO why not do it in bed! lol ----but the main problem i had was not enough screen real estate for, vs code, google, and etc.-- was annoying-- but the macbook if you use four fingers it makes it sooo easy to keep you windows placed where you want, push them to edge of screen to do something else, and pull your fingers back together to pick up where you left off! Note habits die hard, and the Mac eco system is different. Will take time to adjust, but I seem to be doing okay, and it's my first day really using a mac.

Hey Josh, an idea for a quick video - the different configurations for Macbook Pro for the different types of users - ie 16GB + 512 TB for casual users, 32GB + 1TB for Developers, etc.......they are not cheap and not upgradable thereafter, so hope you can get your thoughts on the different configurations for each use case. You always want to save money, but you always don't want to kick yourself for cheaping out when your needs exceed what you have. Thanks!

Trying to decide whether to buy the Mac Studio with the max or the ultra. I'd be pushing over $10k AUD for the full ultra setup and the new display. But I want something that will last. In saying that, my iMac with 10 core CPU is totally fine in reality, but does bog down a little with photography working with 46MP images. I really just want that M1 snappiness though. Something about all M1 devices makes them feel so responsive and snappy compared to any Intel Mac I have used. My son's M1 low-end Air is snappier than my top-end iMac. I would think the M1 Pro 14 is better here - I assume your tasks gain from CPU rather than GPU - the 10C M1 Pro and M1 Max models perform the same CPU wise, it's only the GPU you gain with the M1 Max. Not to mention battery life and portability.

So, I've been thinking about this video since it was released, and unfortunately, I have a few criticisms of it... Let me start by saying I have nothing against Josh as a reviewer; I like his reviews and I trust him a lot. That being said, nobody is perfect, and I don't think he gave credit where it was due: *Anecdote time* That being said, the model I got, a 14 inch MacBook Pro with 10 core CPU, 32 core GPU, 64 GB of unified memory, and 2 TB of storage, was available for same-day delivery from Apple. Being that my only other non-vintage or obsolete Mac was a 2015 15 inch MacBook Pro with an Intel Core i7, 16 GB of RAM, either 512 or 1 TB of storage, of which the CPU and storage would become a limit if I used it as much as I do my current model. But the worst part was that this was a model without a dGPU (in the case of this model, the AMD Radeon R9 M370X with 2 GB of GDDR5 vRAM, which still sounds laughable nowadays), only the Iris Pro 5200 iGPU. That meant that video editing was a nightmare on this machine, and I resorted to using a custom-built desktop with an several different Intel i9 CPUs (the i9-8086K and later the 9900K), 64 GB of DDR4 RAM, many different drives, including a 1 TB NVMe SSD for Windows 10 and three 2 TB HDDs for extra storage, a GTX 1080, later upgraded to (luckily) an ASUS RTX 3080 for most heavy duty tasks. I planned to get a new laptop eventually, maybe one day a new MacBook Pro with an ACTUAL dGPU, however then Apple released the 2016 MacBook Pro redesign, and I immediately was not happy. As a person who had (at the time) an iPhone 6 and an iPad Air 2 (so I was in the Apple ecosystem, however, not completely, as I had that Windows desktop), I couldn't stand the 4th generation MacBook Pros. Nothing was upgradable (with the exception of the SSD in the 2016 and 2017 13 inch models with no touch bar and only two Thunderbolt 3 ports, however, it was a proprietary format), the ports were all gone, including MagSafe, the SD card reader, and USB-A (the first two I'm glad to see return on the 2021 models), I absolutely HATED the butterfly keyboard, as it was a nightmare to type on and later turned out to be a faulty mess, and finally for all of those compromises, it was still very expensive for what you got. I decided to wait to see if Apple fixed any of the issues, because at the time, I had gotten my first Windows laptop in a while and I hoped Apple would eventually fix the issues. But as Apple kept making these iterative changes without fixing any of the fundamental issues, and even as new issues popped up, such as thermal limitations on the 2018 15 inch model, I decided to bite the bullet and get a new laptop. My mom ordered a 2018 15 inch MacBook Pro (she really wanted a 15 inch or bigger laptop) that was fully specced out minus the storage (2 TB instead of 4 TB), as she was coming from a 2008 unibody MacBook Pro and she was actually happy with it until it couldn't run macOS Sierra. I also ordered myself a 13 inch 2018 MacBook Pro, but after seeing that the fundamental issues were not fixed on the 2018 models, I decided to return my MacBook Pro without even opening it and go to Windows, which led me first to Alienware, then Acer Predator, and then Asus ROG, none of which were perfect, but as a college student who needed a reliable computer to take to class (I am a computer science student), the MacBook Pro just wasn't going to cut it anymore. I then got a Samsung phone and left Apple for a few years, as I wasn't liking the direction they were going. Then the 16 inch MacBook Pro was released in 2019, and while the keyboard (in my opinion, I know Josh may feel differently) was a MASSIVE improvement, both in terms of key feel and reliability over the 2016 - early 2019 models, it still was too late, as I didn't see a reason to leave Windows and Android behind, and the port situation was still bad and professional applications were actually worse off than before due to Apple kicking out Nvidia off of macOS and macOS Catalina killing off many apps I needed at the time, making MacBooks a no-go for me. But then 2021 rolled around, and Android phones became a joke, with the game where which brand could Apple was highly encouraged, even if it meant regressing features from previous years. (Because of this, I recently got an iPhone 13 Pro in early March 2022, leaving both Samsung and Google because they were so much worse than even my S10+ from 2019. Who would have thought Apple would be making my 2021 smartphone of the year? And no, the S21 Ultra doesn't count.) The pendulum then started to back towards Apple, as they appeared to be returning to form. Next, in 2021 the release of Windows 11 turned out to be a dud, and I was completing my MS in computer science when I remember getting ready to watch the October 2021 Apple event, thinking that the rumored MacBook Pros would simply be a return to form from the 2015 MacBook Pros, nothing more. After all, I was comfortable on Windows, and if need be, I could install Linux and call it a day. By the end of the event, I was so wowed by the 2021 MacBook Pros, I ordered one for myself, which I am typing this anecdote on. And as somebody who started to get into music production, video editing, and deeper into programming, these new MacBook Pros intrigued me. And I'm happy to say they lived up to the hype! *End anecdote time* 1. From 1:40 - 1:53, I agree with this statement 100%. As somebody who got the 14 inch 32 core GPU model, I do wish that I could have gotten the 24 core GPU model. 2. At 2:27, you mentioned that the battery life of the 14 inch MacBook Pro "was just bad". I actually get 8 hours EASILY on the my M1 Max MacBook Pro with 32 GPU cores. 3. At 2:47, you mention that the laptop got "warm to the touch". Tell me another laptop in its size and weight class with this much power that DOESN'T get warm to the touch. Oh right, *IT DOESN'T EXIST!* 4. At 8:38 I agree 100%. macOS external monitor support is horrible. And I personally do not like macOS anymore. It feels like a worse version of Windows Vista with all of the nagging. Sadly, I think your 14 Inch MacBook Pro with the 24 core GPU was a lemon. I'm shocked that you would just give up like that, and not give the machine another chance. In addition to a few minor issues with this review, I cannot say I agree with this review at all. And again, I really like your content Josh, but this review was a miss for me. Thank you for reading this, and hopefully your next review is good!
