Regarding the how insecure using a normal card is, when ever you pay with your card at a terminal the cashier has the ‘reprint’ option. That gives them your full card number and all they have to do is remember your expiry date to manually charge your card WITHOUT you or the card being present. I work at a front desk of a hotel and we can easily do this if we want. However Apple Pay masks your number and prevents us or our finance department from seeing your card details
As an Indian, India has a new way of payments which is UPI (Uniformed Payments Interface) that directly transfers money from bank account to bank account without sharing any bank detail excluding bank name and non-sensitive details.
I love using Apple Pay but unfortunately not everyone takes it which is a bummer. I love the fact that I rarely ever have to take my debit card out of my wallet, like this I don’t have to risk losing anything like cash (who ever carries cash nowadays). I just use my Apple Watch or my phone. The only time you will ever find me caring cash is if either I am going to make a deposit in the bank, going to like a sandwich shop that I go to that gives you a discount if you use cash and whenever I travel. Because if the place that I’m going to doesn’t take Apple Pay, and by chance, I lose my credit card or debit card, at least I have some sort of tangible form of payment. Great video!
Physical card replacement, whilst using your digital replacement, carries one major security risk. If somebody intercepts your mail, that new physical card is active in transit. It has to be active in order for your digital replacement card to work. Whereas before, even if somebody stole that physical card, it would not be active. The credit card companies have not separated the two.
My card was damaged, so while waiting for my new card, same number, arrives, I input my information into “Wallet”, and ExpressI followed your instructions and will wait to see how it all works. Thanks for the instructions.
FYI: This is not just how Apple Pay works, this is how the whole ecosystem of wallet applications (known as software-based mobile payments, or SBMP) works, as mandated by the entity behind the orchestration of all major card brands, EMVCo. :)
I use Apple Pay for most things now, I especially love it on my Apple Watch because you just have to press the side button twice instead of Face ID on my phone. I've use Express Mode when I go into London, it's a great feature, and as I wear my watch on my right arm it's even faster paying on my watch than an actual card thanks to the express mode.
@@dileevip yes Apple Pay on the watch takes Apple Pay to another level, I almost always use it on my watch, it's so much faster than doing Face ID on my phone every time.
The idea of excluding some of the CC credentials in the data transfer is great, even though you can still hack the Apple stream/mechanism or other wallet applications, if you get around or maybe directly in front of the encryption. You would then just be abusing the Apple pay process to your benefit. It stands or falls with how good the security measures of any paying process at the end of day are.
I’ve been using Apple Pay strictly for over 4 years now. Easy, secure, convenient. Where I live in the DFW, pretty much every business accepts Apple Pay!
Good to know, I just had my CC's stolen from my GYM locker at 24 Hour Fitness in McKinney. Left my phone and wallet contents etc. Since they left my phone and I had text notifications for relatively small amounts the damage wasn't too bad. But after this I am going to attempt to use Apple Pay and basically leave the cards at home. Maybe hide on in my car or something. Going to be interesting to see how it pans out.
Great video although it like to see the playback speed at 100%, not sped up. I reduced playback to 75% and the sound was weird. Anyway, thanks for the work and great job of explanation!
I have started using Apple Pay a lot more since the pandemic started. Also I've used the Express Mode quite a few times recently when I have been to London and used public transport.
I’m already a daily Apple Pay user, but this information is incredibly valuable to someone who is looking to transition over to a virtual wallet. I never carry a wallet around with me anymore, I just use Apple Pay - my favorite is using it on my Apple Watch 😊. There are however a few stores that still don’t accept Apple Pay, or tap to pay for that matter, and that gets annoying. Probably something worth mentioning in your video is that Apple is rolling out the ability to add your drivers license/state ID to your wallet for identification purposes. Not too sure where that would really come in handy, as it’s just best to show your physical identification. Anyway, good video and keep making more great content like this!
Great presentation. Thank you. However, I wouldn’t use the last tip re express card. anyone who finds your lost phone could use it easily and pay automatically…
Had my Credit Cards stolen from my GYM locker as secure as you can be with a lock. Second time in 5 years across two different states. Amazingly both times they left my phone, keys and wallet contents. This second experience has me ready to try to end keeping physical cards with me at all.
@@dileevip Appreciate it, yea I think I can leave a physical CC under the floormat of my car and just do away with Physical ones unless its a restaurant or something.
@@dileevip 2 weeks in it seems like outside of sit down restaurants like 80% of places I visit accept NFC payments. There are a few Grocery stores like Kroger that don't accept it but you can use their App to pay so you don't have to carry a physical card. Sadly, Home Depot and Lowes both don't accept Apple Pay which is odd when I was able to use it at places like the Dollar Tree and Harbor Freight. I will say its a major improvement being able to leave the cards at home and just hide one in my vehicle if I need it in a pinch.
@@dileevip Drove from Dallas to Sacramento for Thanksgiving. Lots of small towns and non tech places on the way. Love's truck stops and Chevron all had contactless readers on the Gas Pumps. Flyers didn't have it on the pumps but I was able to use inside the store. Some selection bias on my end but Costco's and Safeway by all its other names those gas stations all had NFC readers. About 1,800 miles each way and I would say 75% I could easily do with NFC. It wasn't the only factor as fuel costs, etc played a role.
Great question! You can add multiple cards and they will be in your wallet app. You can set a default card, but also select which card you want to pick before authenticating with Face ID. Try adding multiple cards, they made it pretty intuitive. Lemme know if you have more questions!
Very informative. Great video I am going to start using my wallet !! But That express card section does not seem safe. What if somebody grabs your phone they can just swipe it without your facial recognition? That seems dangerous how do you prevent a Thief from using it contactless?
Thanks for watching! Yeah fair point. But if someone swiped your phone I feel like you would just take steps to brick the phone anyways. And if they swipe once in the transit system it’s small peas at the end of the day no?
with all the security cameras in place, seems like this would be a good way to catch the thief that stole your phone... cause thieves are know to be one sandwich short of a pic-nic...
Great content, straight to the point, helpful visualisation … one tiny thing for me is your speed. Speak a bit slower and it will not only be easier to follow (e.g. for non native English speakers) but add some viewing time as a byproduct - win-win and an easy one. Content is king but accessibility is its queen, together they rule the world (of RU-vid at least😉)
This turned out well. But on the flip side if someone takes your information and it auto updates on Apple Pay then they can have your information to your new card before you do.
I have been using Apple pay for a while now and I love it. I did not know about the travel card express option. So, thanks for that. I learned something again today.
If you found this video helpful, would appreciate if you considered subscribing! Making more content coming up soon, like the iPhone 14 next month. Trying to reach 1k subs, and would appreciate your support!
I added Apple Pay when it was first introduced and I use it all the time, in fact I’ve become so reliant on it 🙈. Unfortunately though, when I got a new phone the transition of information (trying to add the previous card ) from one phone to another did not go smoothly which resulted in me having to issue a new card. I think it’s fine now though now that I know a bit more about how Apple Pay and wallet work.
I have Apple Pay setup with all my cards except Discover IT. Discover card just keeps getting errors so I just stopped attempting to add it. Tried for over a month with no useful help from Apple nor Discover.
Can you please do a short video about setting up transit cards to Apple Watch? Going to Paris soon and I already have Navigo Easyand Navigo Decouverte physical cards but would like to set up my Apple watch.
In the European Union, by law it's required for all shops, no matter what they sell, to have contact less method of payment. That means everything like Google Pay or Apple Pay works normally with no issues.
When Apple introduced Apple Pay there were only 200K points of sale where one could use it. At that time few US banks were issuing contactless cards (and most issuers were still putting the Primary Account Number on the face of the card and the mag-stripe.) The number has grown fast to the point where it is now rare to encounter a merchant where it cannot be used. OMNY can be used throughout the NYC mass transit system and mass transit around the world is adopting contactless payment schemes. I rarely carry a physical card any more and long for the day when I will never carry one.
@@dileevip I spent five weeks in Slovakia with trips to Krakow, Budapest and Vienna. I was able to use contactless payments in all the big cities and some of the smaller ones. When I got to some of the smaller towns, it was cash only.
Cool. quick and helpful. Point to note: No express transit card on my phone, which is either the age of the model (7, therefor no IOS 16) or it may be a geo-restriction: I'm in Australia. (But the express transit card sounds a bit too easy. No Face/Touch ID required? ...hmmm... (uneasy look) ) Thanks.
Glad it was helpful. I’m not sure if Paris system accepts Apple Pay yet the same way London and New York do but I hope it works. Lemme know if they do!
@@dileevip Thank you for this video! So, to recap, once I load up my wallet, I do not even have to open my phone or the app or anything if I am tapping into the London tube? I would just tap my locked phone? tia
@@jules2565 just make sure that the card you want to use is selected in settings -> wallet & Apple Pay -> express transit card. And then yes. Just tap for transit. No need to unlock phone, no need to verify with Face ID, just place the back of your phone on the scanner and you should be good to go!
@@jules2565 not sure what you mean by open your phone and app will appear. If you don’t use express transit card, you can just use Apple Pay by double clicking the screen lock button
If I use Apple Pay to buy something on a website. Is my debit/credit card that I’m using, hidden from them or not? Or is Pay Pal a better option for privacy/safety?
The merchant sees your verified name and address but not not your card number. In lieu of your card number they get a digital token that guarantees they will be paid.
@@dileevip All proxy systems, including PayPal and Apple Pay, are the preferred method for paying online. I do not understand your comment about PayPal. What am I missing.
I hear some channels about it but I never tried myself: When you setup a card on Express Transit option, it'll only works on transit terminals or any nfc enabled payment reader can charge the card without FaceID ?
@@dileevip Cool. I was concerned about the security issues. We don't have transit support here in my city, but I'll try next month on a trip. Thanks, great video :D
Did not know about the "transit card" option... very cool. But doesn't that make it less secure? If someone steals my phone, couldn't they charge stuff without my Face ID?
As someone who works in a bank, banks dont just get raw data. It's obviously encrypted, probably in a very similar way apple pay encrypts their data. If an entity can decrypt the data, it can encrypt it.... There is an added security benefit though as you're hopping through apple servers which if it gets encrypted differently in each 'transaction' would make it harder to decrypt, but also have higher chance of getting the encrypted data
The express travel is nice but there is a catch . In Europe there are thieves that can touch the pocket you where the phone and make a transaction with a POS whithout your knowledge. So better have the expres travel feature off 😢
0:42 I wish that was the case in Canada haha. New card? Gotta wait, remove the old, add the new. Thankfully at least though we've had contactless payments and chips for like 10 years now, easy.
Just have a Macbook Pro, and cant pay i With apple pay, any reason? Its a headache, even no one in apple knows, they forwarded me from department to department 🙂
Select the card that you wish to delete in the Apple Wallet, tap the three little dots at the top right, choose card details, go to the bottom of the resulting screen, and press the "remove card" option.
Can you elaborate a bit on that part about "you cancelled a lost card / ordered a replacement and yet somehow Apple Pay updated to have the NEW card info even before you received the card in the mail"? How does that even work? 😄
@@dileevip Sunday, May 29, I need to put $6 on my Apple Pay because it take out $1 off so $5 I when to cvs bought one water bottle then I scanned my iPhone se to pay for the bottle of water I need it to put my iPhone se in they ask me to put my fingerprint it didn’t scanned instead I put my iPhone passcode and then the checkmark show up I pay for it
I have added only one card on my wallet and I did enabled for express transit but every time I try to pay contactless ,, I need to put my passcode… it’s so annoying I just wanted to tap and go but every time putting passcode is so annoying,, 😢
Ah dang that sucks. The express transit only works for transit. For everything else you still need to out in your password or do Faceid or touchid. Hope that helps!
I am from Singapore I have seen other people just tap n go in their phone at train station I don’t know why in my it’s not working…. Rather than doing passcode thing I would opt for credit card tap n go…….. 😔😔😔
In the US Express pay only works with cooperating, mostly transit, systems and for small payments. An iPhone with Express Pay enabled and a contactless card work identically. Note that Express Pay is an Apple Wallet, not Apple Pay, feature. The charge goes directly to the default card that you designate for Express Pay, not through Apple. Note that all contactless payments require a careful balance between convenience and security, Most payees get it right, either initially or quickly. Such balance depends in part upon whether or not the transaction is online. The risk is to the payee, not the card holder. In Europe, where many contactless applications are not online, one must enter a PIN for contactless card transactions over a threshold amount.
I’ve heard that Apple Pay works in a different way outside the US From what I’ve heard it makes a virtual copy of the credit card instead of acting like an intermediary Dunno how true that is though
I have a MetroCard that allows me a senior discount on the MTA. The MTA keeps promising me that they will someday give me the discount using contactless OMNY with my iPhone. In the meantime I pay the higher fare for the convenience of using contactless OMNY. Convenience trumps cost. Admittedly, subway fare is not a large part of my budget.
the thing is that using Apple Pay is great ive been using for a long time now but for the transit its not available here in Dubai, the thing that's weird about it... is that Dubai has advanced technology in almost everything and its just so weird to have everything smart but not have smart payments for metro??
Part 1 How? 1 time in 85° Bakery Cafe,I made the mistake & put a random credit card on it,&,lo and behold,it works fine, therefore the cashier didn't notice oh & I added more credit cards & oh,I put a random credit card for...... To be continued Part 2 Express transit, oh & 1 time,I forgot to bring the store credit card for the store, but apple pay saved me,therefore, I earned a few points on the particular store card.
