As a photographer I learned a long time ago the importance of keeping on top of image management. How many of those 68,000 photos are worth keeping? How many do you really need? It can get away from you in no time and before you know it you're staring at thousands of photos with no idea what's what and which are keepers and which are garbage. I forced a habit of sorting all that out (deleting bad ones, tagging good ones, etc.) as I go, and never leaving it for later. If you truly do need all those photos, then it's probably time to move them to another cloud service that doesn't store all that info on your phone. Currently, there's just no feasible way to manage that many photos using iCloud and your phone.

You're right, but he brings our attention to the problem of iOS limitations in managigng photos. He bought extra space on iCloud, paid for it and it doesn't do the job. That's the problem.

I know it's been a while since yo u post this, just thought maybe you have a way now to have pics that take up your phone storage? I got iCloud and paid for 200GB every month though somehow with photos and Apple Music I am over the storage limit. I delete and delete and still makes no difference on my storage. I am searching to find the best way to safe and storge what I want to having no problem with storage or iCloud and all the bad things I've heard can happen storage there. Anyone want to help I would be so grateful!!

Shay Sullivan haha I’m having the same issue. Looking into Google photos, and it’s unlimited but at a lower quality, and only saves video at 1080p. Can do full quality but that seems to be limited to 15mb Thinking of maybe doing the $2.99 option on iCloud but not sure what the best option is

Perfect but even doing that ...... I would need folders like for a Birthday or Marriage or whatever, and backing up with the same quality (resolution) and information (gps) ... I don't find a good way to do it from my Apple. When I had Android didn't have any issue.

I understand your pain. People think that you "want" to keep all these photos on your phone at all times which shows they do not understand the problem. The problem can be easily fixed if there were a setting on the iphone, ipad, to deselect photos over 6 months or even to deselect syncing of years. For example, they would all go into the cloud but only the past year will show up in iphoto. The only way to show the other ones would be if you did a search, like a website would. I have the same problem and it drives me crazy.

Can you please make the same video for 2019. Did they improved? Face recognition is working in 2019 due A11 chip? How much it take on your phone. It would be very interesting.

2nd that! I'm making a video on the new Folder features you can finally use in ios 12. As an organizational tool, for me, folders are a huge improvement! But other things like how long it takes to load the whole library into apps like iMovie hasn’t changed in the least. Although I wonder if that isn't app specific & if iMovie just hasn’t been updated in a while? I'm really curious about how many photos you now have and how it’s all working for you in 2019. Currently I have in the high 70's. I'd also like to know what you switched to for backup. Both Google & Amazon have their idiosyncrasies too. Thanks for the great video!

I’ve got +65k photos and +2500 videos on my 2Tb iCloud account, and here is my experience: face recognition has been working very well since Apple featured iCloud syncing for it. To get it work, the key is to plug the iPhone/iPad/iMac whatever, to launch Photos app into the face recognition menu, and the to lock the screen. I think a good wifi connexion is needed too, and it just works fine for me, but the process would takes several nights for a big library. More than160 people identified. AI doesn’t do everything alone, I have been spending hours by night to confirm faces with the built-in tool answering yes or no to the question « is this John Do? ». Hint #1: Photos App is not made for screenshots or document (put these in Files or Notes). Photos is just brilliant for kind of « personal instagramming ». A clean photo library is wonderful, always in my poket, amazing with ios13 ^^ Hint#2: complete identification with Contacts. Even if you only know the guy’s first name, create a contact sheet first, and then identify him or her in Photos face recognition album. Enjoy 😉

I'd love to see a follow up of how your Search works. I really love the new Search capabilities in photos. I can search for "Tree" and it will show me all the photos with trees in them. Or "beach", "water", even the word "box" works. It's really cool. I wonder how that works on yours.

WOW - good info, I only have about 3800 photos and as a backup nut (LOL) I have mine on iPhotos, Google Photos and OneDrive. I pay the 2.99 a month for the storage from Apple and OneDrive is part of my annual Office365 package. I just learned about Google photos about a month ago and I love it. I really would like to see Apple to develop the same strategy that Google and Amazon are taking. My 16 gig iPhone 6+ gets full pretty fast so I have to come up work arounds. Love your videos, keep up the good work.

Im in the same boat. But I only have around 20k and about 2k video. Im unhappily paying the $9.99 per month for 1TB and only needing less than half that space. So like you have been looking at Google photos as a replacement. My problems are, what do you keep in Apple Photos? Do you export/backup and then delete most of the library? Next, since we have been using Apple Photos, the management puts them into these obscure folders with a generic file name. So now when starting fresh with Google, you have to now batch rename all the files to the "shot on" date. This can be done pretty easy with photos, but the video metadata is not as easy to retrieve. This video metadata I need to rename the files just is not there and thats what Im stuck on atm. Its hard to break away from Apple and thats how they like it.

I just made the switch to i-phone a few months ago and taking photos and video is a big reason why i did it. And the 8 Plus seems like a fantastic device other than inadequate zoom. I try to keep it simple. I don't shy away from taking photos, but I do force myself to edit them and discard shots which are inferior versus others trying to do the same thing. One needs to be somewhat ruthless, otherwise you could drown in photos, and I do not want to complicate matters beyond what it already is - i phone, macbook pro, icloud, and an external HD.

I’ve 1/10th the photos (20GB) you got but I understand you. I don’t let it optimize the photo storage precisely because I experienced issues with it - no matter WiFi/cellular speeds, it had glitches. Also a reason why the 256GB iPhone X made sense for me.. in any case, wish/hope it works better in the future.
@aceraf158
@aceraf158 7 лет назад
I back all my photos (mostly 4K videos now) to my NAS drive rather than leaving them on iCloud, I can still access them via my NAS and it means I can get away with using the 50GB iCloud option. I do have a 256GB i7+ but prefer backing up once a month to clean my photos app up. The amount you're paying for iCloud you could get a NAS setup and then have access for free thereafter.
@nfsu22009
@nfsu22009 7 лет назад
You still have plenty of free space, that s why "optimize iphone storage" works but not fully. There are still pictures downloaded, not just thumbnails. I have this on my iphone, it s a 16 gb with 600 photos and i use "optimize..." but it still downloads all the photos cuz i have free space. Try filling up your phone with big apps to trigger the cleaning process of the OS, then you ll see exactly how much space that "optimize..." should take. Cheers!

I just saw your video. I am thinking of switching to the IPHONE 8.. I had the same problem with Google Photos way back when they first started the service. At that time It was almost impossible to find stuff, it has gotten way better now. I am a avid photographer I have since then switched to SmugMug to store all of my photos. It is as of now only $4 a month. It has an app to upload your photos into . It also stores videos but not huge files. The best part is the space is unlimited at full resolution. Lots of sharing features and functions to enjoy I'm at at roughly 10 thousand plus photos mostly from a DSLR. Every month or so I upload everything to the service and move on from there. After a year or so of Google Photos I delete them from my phone and start over. My only real gripe is that it will not store RAW or NEF Photos from cameras. I hope this finds you well a year later. Great review... MG

I have the same problem with storage. Paying £2.99 a month and don’t want to pay £6.99 for 1TB of iCloud storage. Advice I have received is the way that Apple's system is designed, any data deleted from your iCloud account will be deleted from all devices signed in with the same account. It is then essential that the data is backed up before you start, preferably to an external device. You can disable iCloud within the iPad's settings but there are a couple of downsides to this. Firstly, your new photos and videos will not synchronise between devices. Secondly, having your photos and videos only on your iPad is not really safe. If the device fails then the data may be lost, so additional backup is recommended. An external hard drive would be suitable, but not the only option. If you have a Windows computer, the data can be transferred to this. Alternatively, you could choose an alternative cloud storage option such as Google photos. Google offer 15GB of free storage for photos and videos, but at a lower resolution then they offer unlimited cloud storage.

I have over 80,000. Most are screen captures and photos downloaded from the web. I want to get all those kinds of photos off of my devices and not have to pay that $9.99 fee. The problem is that apple doesn't see a difference between an image grabbed from the web and one I took. Also the file naming is pretty useless. I've been trying to upload them all to dropbox and then deal with them there, but when conserve space is turned on, the photos aren't on the phone to upload. I just got an ipad pro with 512GB of mememory which is 4x what I had before. I'm hoping to deal with it soon, but ran into the other issue that I had been keeping photos I take with my phone as HEIC and raw. Dropobox defaulted to jpeg, so now I have to go back and find the ones that shouldn't be jpeg and remove/reupload those. It's all very painful.

I have over 50,000 photos, I download all photos from the Iphone to my Windows Desktop then organize and edit them (I use ACDSEE software). Then I transfer them to the Apple photos app on my Apple Mac Mini where I put them in Albums by years. I mark the best ones as favorites in the photo app which are then sent to the iphone and ipad. I use the same system to scan old photos and slides which I add the metafile data for date taken and location.

Alan Pavletta You could always download the video, share it, then re-upload the video, if it hasn’t already, then delete it from your device. We’re talking about literally one 4K video, which isn’t a major concern. My issue I have, is that I have thousands of photos, which does not necessarily need to be on my device for me to view them. This is why I love Google Photos.

I have 7,000 photos and over 1700 videos just on my device. I had to upgrade my iCloud storage to 2TB just so I could do a backup because I have even more in iCloud from over the last six years. Most of my photos and videos are of my kids so they are precious to me but I also kinda hate Apple for locking me into their cell with golden bars. But I certainly don’t want to save everything on my computer, either. I’ve had those die too much for that too. Cloud storage seems the best way for now, as long as we don’t actually have a world apocalypse. I started a Google Drive too so I got photos all over the place! Now I’m at a point where I need a phone upgrade but I hate that I will likely just stay with Apple because it’s the easiest thing to do. I don’t have the patience to comb through and transfer everything to Google Drive or some other service. And that puts me right where Apple wants me 😐

Should've been titled problems using icloud when storing too many photos. I'm getting the same problems you mentioned with just half the number of photos. Had to switch to google photos since as you mention you get unlimited storage. Google does a little better but still has similar issues when you have too many photos. Biggest problem with Apple is AFAIK there is no easy way to delete all the photos you already uploaded to cloud to start all over!

Both are maxed my phone won’t work properly anymore and I can only download AND delete 1k photos at a time. Takes me about 20-30 mins to do as long as my computer is working properly and then I finally transfer onto an external HD. I really don’t know what to do now tho… I’m using so much time to attempt to get more space and as a photographer I just need my camera at the drop of a hat. So considering making a second Apple ID. I've had this problem for several yrs now with my boss' phone. he's basically a hoarder and wants to keep every image so there's no option for deleting them from the device. can't really use cloud service also bcos well if anyone has been to Italy you would know that network bandwith isn't really good especially if you live in the hills like he does. i'm currently trying to manage about 150K photos and about 2K videos, its a head guys trust me bcos as of now it takes at times up to about 10mins to save images.

Hi Aron, I have a question. In a few days I intend to change my device from 6s to the XR. I have iCloud Photo Library turned on on my 6s, but before I switch I will make a backup of my 6s on iTunes and then restore from that backup onto my XR. Will all my photos be backed up into iTunes and then restored onto XR? If so, then will the iCloud Photos also download again and duplicate the photos or iCloud photos won't download again?

About a year ago I turned on iCloud Photo Library. I was using iCloud Photo Stream from my iPhone to my MacBookPro. When I turned on iCloud Photo Library, I had about 12,000 photos. It took about 8 hours to sync everything. When it was down, I ended up with like 30,000 photos! Thumbnail size on the phone and originals on the Mac. I was not happy. I’m now trying to get rid of duplicates (sometimes there’s 3-4 of the same photo, but know even if I deleted all my photos, I’d probably still have thousands of photos but nothing there. It’s a mess. I don’t know where they all came from or where they are. I just wish I hadn’t turn on iCloud Photo Library! All it did was create a problem that I don’t know how to solve.

iCloud storage costs are the lowest of any provider just now. In the UK I pay £6.99 (about $9) for 2TB (shareable with others).

I have over 20000 photos and i use icloud to store my photos as well because it is a much more seamless process than the other services. But at the same time I'm also looking for a cheaper alternatives.

I have 45,000 and use Apple Photos as well. Biggest reason to not switch to Google Photos is the limitations you have on editing your photos. Specifically, there is no way to use a 3rd party application to edit your photo(s). The closest thing you can do is to download a copy and upload as a NEW picture (not a version of the original). For now, this is a deal breaker for me. I think its the same for Amazon Photos. I haven't really used Lightroom, so can't comment on that one.

I am using iCloud photo library now I have over 50,000 photos how was using Google Photos but Google uses so much bandwidth that if you even open the app just for a little bit your whole Internet connection goes to shit and nobody else can use Wi-Fi around you. And takes forever just save photos or share photos if you ever want to do that so I went with iCloud.

I have 16000 photos and I feel the system is slowing up. I use iCloud and Dropbox for all of my photos. Some of the photos on my photo I mark as favorites. And I free up space on my devise by deleting all the non favorites, which is most of the photos. Please note deleting photos on your device also deleted them on iCloud unless you make a n other copy on iCloud.

I decided not to use any cloud - it downgrades your resolution and internet storage is not efficient. I just use 3rd party app and use lightening to SD cards - it seems in very near future, there will be way of tagging photos in the metadata so that they are easily organized by any photo manager that can read and organize by tags.

Is there a way (or an app) to find photos that are not in any albums on the iphone? I want to find those "uncatogorized photos" so I can keep them organized.

What if you have a 16gb iPhone with 68000 photos backed up in iCloud? You don’t have 40gb space for thumbnails. How does it work then?

My understanding is that if you delete photos from your iPhone, they are also deleted from ICloud/iPhotos. So I upload them to Amazon Photo and Google Photo for safe keeping and for now also keep them on my iPhone (about 2000) and iCloud. Of the 3, I find Google Photo to be the easiest to use and the Apple Photos app and iCloud Photo just completely befuddle me.Is it true that you lose any photos in the iCloud that you delete from your iPhone?

Same problem. My daughter has about 50,000 snapshots and a ton of videos of my granddaughter. She wants me to solve the problem and so far I have not. I’ll keep searching......I guess. If you find a solution, please post.

Is it possible to choose which photos are going to be uploaded on iCloud? I use Google Photos, but I want another cloud place for a second backup. Since it would be just a safe backup, I want to store only the most important pictures there.

isiddharth singh THIS IS TRIGGERING!!!!!!! In my opinion I like using iCloud better I don’t care about my photo storage I only care about my new/old photos I take showing up on my iPhone and the originals are only taking up 3.89GB on my iPhone which is rarely a minor experience for me. I’m saving up my money so when my plan expires and then I purchase the plan to 200GB plan a month so iCloud is good for me in my opinion. By the way I have 26,806 photos which is not a problem to me I’ll see what will it be like for me if I tried out google photos.

I have approximately 90,000 photos with iPhone X and the latest system. Using iCloud has recently become a big problem for me. I need some solutions and hope that Google photos can help. I don't like the idea of Google having access to use my photos, however (at least that's what I've hear). I think I need to transition to Google Photos or clean up my iPhone Photos library. Is there a way to create a new library? Or, repair it on my iPhone (I know you can do this in the desktop version of Photos)? Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

I’d never should’ve watched this video because it makes me have anxiety of that I should not have 24,000 photos on my phone it took me one year and this present to get me 20,000 photos on my phone and this video gave me a lot of anxiety and fear that I have to delete them all if they slow down and mess up my phone if that is the case my photos are the most one huge thing that’s important to me on my phone.

Why are we so obsess with keeping our pictures in 1990s we did not have that many pictures printed is all about this digital era we are this way....just keep what you need if you don't sit and look at everyone of those photos in the pass 3 months Why keep them? Hard drives are a good way if you must keep them all invest in one of those no internet need to look at them just your computer.

Yeah, well, I just went looking into Amazon. They say you don't even need tags because they sort all the pix for you. Convenient maybe, but, like Google, you life is going to the borg servers.
