It's just funny the extent of which tech consumers are out of the lup with the greater population of consumers and even though Apple gets things wrong on a consumer level at times excelling at creating a conceptual integration in tech is not something many tech companies get right. I'm always major corporations . But I think they hit the nail in the head with this one. and as for the silly images I think it's very apple kinda like a Disney character. And they don't want to be responsible for misinformation. Plus all of us tech guys are super used to all but some of the people are aiming at like it to farther their iMessage or whatever expression . Having been a dedicated Mac user for over 20 years, the one thing I have never missed on the Macs I have owned is A.I. I have absolutely no interest in A.I, generative or otherwise. I'd rather keep my brain sharp by using it rather than having a machine do it for me and removing the need to think for myself. Unless Apple integrates this as an opt in option, Apple has ended any future upgrade path I was considering. Maybe Apple Intelligence will cause the second hand values of Intel based Macs capable of running macOS 15 to increase, since none of them will have A.I capabilities. I've no interest in any tech led AI bubble, so in preparation, I've picked up a 2018 Mac mini core i7, 32GB RAM, 512GB SSD (manufactured July 2020) and a BlackMagic eGPU (both fairly cheaply) to take the place of my current Apple Silicon based Mac mini, in case the Intel Mac prices starting going sky high. Sure there'll be a performance hit, but with the eGPU, graphic performance is better and it will run macOS Sequoia without any Apple Intelligence contaminating my work space.

Your last concern is valid. Apple Intelligence is designed to be able to orchestrate (orchestrate being a keyword) hundreds of actions for you, so you can accomplish more while saving time. Two Examples: 1. A friend texts you his new address. Right from the Messages thread, you can say, “Add this address to his contact card,” and Siri will take care of it. You do not need to open Contacts app, search your friend name, click edit, copy paste the new address from Message app. All done automatically in the background in second. 2. “Show me my photos of Stacey in New York wearing her pink coat,” and Siri will bring those right up. Then you might say, “Make this photo pop,” and Siri will enhance it, just like that. You do not need to open Photo app to do search yourself from thousands of Stacey photos, you do not need to edit it in the apps to make the color stands out. They are processed in the background using multiple apps and give you a result in second.
@k.vn.k
@k.vn.k 7 дней назад
You know what that means for future computing? Opening apps is no longer relevant, though I suppose you still need to download it. “Order curry from XYZ restaurant and set alarm when they almost here.” does not require you to open Uber Eat and Reminder for example. “Send a formal email to my manager to congratulate her for her promotion.” Siri will not only send it, but also write it for you, just like that. You do not even need to specify her name or email address .

I always felt anyone that can pull off on device LLM will take the lead. Apple probably studied a lot of use cases and realize the current use of AI are really simple tasks or tasks that doesn’t need the generating side of what other companies are trying to shoehorn into a use case. I like this implementation and I think this can only get better over time. Even if they mess it up like they did with Maps, they have a track record to not only catchup quickly but also edge out the competition. Hi, Luke, I really appreciate that you addressed the bit about how we have companies "hiring out" AI to do translations. I was getting translated text from an AI to proofread, and my payrate for proofing AI text was cut by around 75 percent! Why? AI makes plenty of mistakes, translation-wise and context-wise, and it is no better than a skillful non-native target language person. I was outraged and I told the contractor that I refuse to take such jobs from them, because my actual editing work of a MT (Machine Translated) text is about the same as my doing a proofing of something a person created. So, why should I take the hit? A lot of people treat AI like it is truly intelligent and in my case and others like it, people take the fall for it. So I am glad you pointed at this aspect of it. However, if Apple wants to utilize its Apple Intelligence in such a way as to guarantee privacy, and also in such a way as to not try to replace people with slick but fake "creativity" then I think this is a good move. Like you, i think it is a thin line and a tough one to follow, but the basepoint of AI as being an "assistant" like Siri or the "Hey Google" platform, this can be useful. The thing for me is that as a creative, AI can be an interesting set of paintbrushes and colors, but it is no painter. In music I have used a series of such tools ranging from random arpeggiators to KARMA, to generative AI in my Vengeance-Synth platform. These do interesting things, and IF I WANT to use their interesting things in my creativity, great! I use them. But they cannot write songs for me and I don't want them to do so. They only imitate that data they are given, and while they can be clever, they cannot go and truly create. They don't even innovate. So I think even to call it "artificial intelligence" is thankfully a misnomer; perhaps "deep-level imitative" technology is closer to what this stuff really is. Rant concluded for me, for now. Thanks again for a great early summary report.

Luke I have a video suggestion. Some of us have yet to take the leap to upgrade to the M chips. With Apple Intelligence requiring a M chip what are your recommendations for the most cost effective product to purchase to play around with AI? Additionally does it make more sense for the product to be highly mobile (a phone or iPad) vs less mobile (desktop or large laptop)? In other words should we prioritize always having access to the AI (we usually have our phone with us) or having it on a more powerful device?

@@ThatOnePaulGuy You are overselling the new Siri. WWDC presenters didn’t spend a ton of time proving Siris new usefulness, and didn’t really demonstrate much about it tbh. This is definitely the best implementation of AI, not in terms of capability but in terms of intention. Apple Intelligence only focuses on personal context. Hell, even Image Playground, as goofy as the pictures look, is clearly made to not be misused. I’m sure the limitations it has for only 3 styles is intentional, Apple won’t allow you to make a realistic image since that can be used nefariously. They’re the only company I trust with AI.

I think the ability to just generate things vs help with things is what is bad vs good. For example if you asked a math problem to ai vs asking how to help solve a part you were stuck on. Very very different things

Kind of hard watching the WWDC video and separating what is new right now (if anything) and the future vaporware being talked about which we "might" see this Fall, or later. What was missing, was new M4 hardware beyond iPad, and when we might be seeing the actual products, and in what configurations, to use this promised future AI with a more capable M4 neural network.

One the biggest problems with Siri is it's scenario driven design. Too many Siri features are very focused on specific actions without real flexibility. LLMs have the opportunity to be very flexible, but I am curious if Apple will build the OS interface for the model flexible as well. Can I instruct it to rename files? Probably yes. But can I instruct it to read the other files in a specific folder to math their naming scheme with respect for the individual data (e.g. date, Nr. of file...)? Can I instruct it to select specific photos from my library by content? Yes, the showed that. But can I export a bunch of photos and have them sorted in folders by event? That would require a multi-action capability and access to the export feature. The understanding capabilities are definitely there, but it just doesn't feel like Apple made it that open. In the worst-case it could take another 2 years until more complex actions are possible, which but such a waste, because most of the necessary interfaces are already in Apple Shortcuts. WHY WASN'T THIS APP MENTIONED? Generating more complex shortcuts with Apple Intelligence would be a game changer.

I think, like a lot of Apple stuff, they have great ideas, and approach a problem from a good angle, but generally release it unready and needing more work.

Since they almost certainly know what people are already using (and trying) to use Siri for, they're probably targeting the low hanging fruit for the first wave just so they can refine their models. Then they should be able to add features relatively quickly depending what people actually use it for. Similar to how the Apple watch got started as an everything watch and is now very much focused on fitness. Wouldn't be surprised if we got a few "I've made that event... by the way I can now tell Luke that you've scheduled it and invite him" prompts for the first few months, similar to how Alexa does it. The image generation stuff feels like both a way of getting the youngsters onboard and making it seamless so they start using the other features as well.

Depends what Mac you have. If your Mac supports Bootcamp, And has decent hardware then most likely it will run the game. I have a base model 2017 27" iMac and can play games like New world at Mid settings with 40 fps with bootcamp. As far as I know M1+ Macs wont run Bootcamp, But I never tried.

What is very important to me is can it be turned off at least paused for a time. Right now something the bugs the crap out of me about Facebook and RU-vid is I decide to look up something that I just heard about or saw one video out of what I normal watch, next thing I know for days I will have my FB page and YT feed flooded with link to things I only had a passing interest in. Personal Intelligence I fear is going to be even worse about this watching everything I do on an ecosystem of devices. How am I to get some private time, do something, listen to, watch something that I don't want popping up in some results generated by Personal Intelligence. The biggest problem with Personal Intelligence it don't know why I did something, read something, listen to something, and so on it only knows that I did it as some point in my life. Personal Intelligence only knows my actions, but it doesn't know why I wanted to do those actions.

I think naming their implementation of AI as “Apple Intelligence” is genius. Besides branding it, it differentiates itself from everyone’s else’s AI, and reinforces their promise of privacy and integration across apps and their ecosystem (Mac, iPhone, iPad, etc.). As far as the image playground goes, it can be seen as gimmicky but they deliberately keeping it cartoonish - it’s not meant for creating photorealistic images but more creative images to use in Messages and other apps. I’m hopeful they will get this right.
