Retired MSU Extension Educator Jim Isleib returns to the old, neglected apple tree which received initial, aggressive renovation pruning exactly one year previously. He describes removing unwanted regrowth to continue the renovation process. Time lapse video clips speed up the pruning shots.

thanks for follow up videos, most videos show the pruning , but then no follow up of how the tree developed. Great work.

Thanks for this follow up video. I was skeptical about the first one because more than 50% of the tree was removed. This video proved that you did the right thing.

These two videos are exactly what we needed to see and hear. We have a small orchard that has been neglected for years. We need to prune these old trees and we will follow your instructions. A lot of work over the next few years but we are confident that the work will result in may years of beautiful and an abundance of apples.

This is great! I’ve been looking for a video like this for years now. Let’s save our old neglected fruit trees! Thank you !!!

It turned out a beautiful looking tree in summer after the pruning.

The finished tree is like a sculpture, a work of art. A great job.

Appreciate that you did a follow up video to your previous one. They are not done often enough. I did a hard first-year cut back on an old apple in my yard a couple years ago but was shocked and intimidated by the second year sprout regrowth and didn’t do a second year pruning. I see know that I just need to start again and keep on it.

Thank you. I have three apple trees that haven't ever been pruned plus a couple of peach trees. This was very helpful.

I have an very old apple tree on my land (lone survivor from an old apple orchard) 24" dia trunk and good 35-40' tall that has not been pruned for decades. About 20% is dead branches. Massive number of vertical suckers. Got 3 apples last year. Thank you for the inspiration and knowledge to tackle this with 35' extension ladder and a chainsaw

Try not to take more than 1/3 of the tree in any one year...

Thank you for making this video! It's exactly what I needed for my new (neglected) apple trees. You were really easy to understand, and your video was clear too.

Thank you. I’ve been struggling with the amount of water shoots that have come up whenever I’ve cut our old apple tree back. I get discouraged at that point, and then just let it go for another 5yrs. Then it gets so bad that I return to cutting it way back, and the cycle repeats. Been going on for 15 years. I wish I would’ve seen your video along time ago. Now I know what the second year really looks like. I should’ve not been so disappointed. Very interested in what the third year will reveal here in another month. Please post again. Thanks!

Just what I was looking for. It's also much more beautiful than it was a year ago. Almost like a Bonsai. Thanks for the videos!

Ive got an old apple tree thats just all over the place. Currently it has cooking apples which i have very little use for especially in the quantities it is producing plus its taking up my needed sunlight from a small growing space. The plan to prune this winter and then graft desirable varieties come spring. I hope it works out

We are renevating a 30 + year old orange tree that died back very badly from our extremely high heat summer in the low Az desert. At first we were just going to cut it down, but we realized new growth was appearing in different places. So we revised our plans to keep the tree. I know it will take a few years to finish. We will see how the oranges taste this year. Thank you, I feel like I did a good job already!! The tree looks wonderful and will regrow so much nicer now.

I was waiting for him to fire up a chainsaw at the very end of the video and cut the tree down at its base. lol

He could have ripped off several handfuls of suckers in mid to late June to help stop that rank growth.

How does the tree respond to this? Will it send up water sprouts everywhere? How will that effect fruiting?

I have large balls where new growth grows every year, straight up. What do I do for those?

I think a fruit tree that is so tall you can’t reach the fruit is too tall. I would have taken the top main branch out. I’m greedy for fruit so it’s dangerous for me to have really tall trees.

Horrible wounds shorten the trees live.
