First attempt at propagating rootstock. The Stoolbed method is easy and requires less space than the Layering method. *Ignore the date in the corner. It was not turned off on the camera.
hello good day. I am from the Philippines , I am interested on rootstock propagation since I want to try a small orchard in the tropics. after harvesting that six sticks, how many rootstock did you make out of that six and what happened to the cuttings after that? can you graft a Scion out of those cuttings ? I am interested to your reply.. amazing video. thank you.
Of the 6 rootstocks harvested, I think 5 made it. I planted them back into the ground and later grafted scions onto them. This is an effective way to multiply rootstocks. However, I now plant the harvested rootstocks and let them grow 1more year before grafting onto them. This gives time for a larger root system to develop. Hope this helps, good luck.
While the rootstocks do have different qualities they are very hard and even not possible to know what it is. I would say bud 9 for me is obvious in my collection. The leaves are red, it is small and slow growing. G935 has many horizontal branches but that is not really enough to know for sure. The only way I know of is to have a lab perform a gene sequence test for dna analysis. Which I’m sure is costly and not worth it. If the tree is mature a person could guess by the height but, even that is varied by the scion that is grafted onto it.
It takes two growing seasons(24months) Plant the rootstock and let it grow for one season. Next spring cut it to ground level. As it grows back fill the pot/bucket with sand and/or sand-soil up to 8-12”, do not cover the top of the new growth. In the third spring cut the rootstocks back to ground level again and plant the harvested stock. In the third year you should have several rootstocks to graft onto. Hope this helps. Some recommend letting the newly harvest rootstock grow for an additional year to improve the root system before grafting but I have not had any issues grafting in the third year.
Thanks for your concern. I do not sell rootstocks or trees. My understanding is that they cannot be sold. However, if they were to be sold the persons selling them would need to pay ~$2 for each rootstock.
