TLDR: RU-vidrs like Linus Tech Tips are influencers, whether they like the term or not. As such, they shouldn't let their personal prejudices get in the way of their content. Instead of applauding what may be potentially the biggest leap in Apple's computing history, you couldn't help but look for holes and skew things in a negative light without the evidence. You're only validating the toxicity, bias and drama PC enthusiasts deny exists, and setting a terrible example for the next generation of youth getting into this community. Let's foster excitement of technology, not hatred between brands. Linus I've been a long time subscriber, but you need some honest feedback, some tough love if you will. Between the title of this video and your pessimistic attitude throughout, this video really rubbed me the wrong way. Clearly I'm not the only one as even Jonathon Morrison called you out publicly on it. I'm both a PC and a Mac guy, own both and in fact I used to be both a PC and Mac technician for over 10 years. I love technology, and if someone asked me about either I'm capable of speaking from an unbiased point of view explaining the differences neutrally, without crapping on either platform always saying there's advantages to both. I don't know if you do this just to garner clicks, or it's your personal bias against apple showing again but either is just straight up unacceptable. To be clear I love a majority of your content and the content from your employees, but always at the cost of "tolerating" your apple-related content as it always held a negative undertone, and this kinda pushed it over the line for me. I used to be a "PC Master Race" guy too, but it was just a phase I recognized everyone goes through until I grew up. Society unfortunately promotes a "us versus them" behavior no matter the subject all about being on a specific "team" so you can talk smack about the "other" team. It feels good to, and to be part of a certain tribe and relate. Sports, cars, food, and computer platforms are no different. As amazing as the PC community is, it's also had the reputation of being elitist and toxic at times, which no one can deny - just look at other comments on this very video. And how could you not when it feels so good to say "I built a PC for half the price of a Mac". Makes for a great video I'm sure, but only serves to divide, and hardly creates an inclusive environment. It wasn't until I bought a mac and fully utilized it's benefits over the years that I realized how immature I behaved before, and now instead of scoffing at either platform, when people ask for my personal opinion I can tell them both are good in their own ways, depending on their needs. Other tech youtubers seem to be able to speak neutrally about this as well without issue. Watching MKBHD's M1 Mac review released this morning proves the point I've told people for years: You can't compare specs on paper anymore. Even as I write this Dave2D released an amazing review of his own where he starts off by saying he's trying to be as neutral as possible from the start. In a time where there's enough negative stuff going on in the world, it doesn't cost you anything trying to speak from a more neutral, or dare I say optimistic point of view - Now more than ever - just by being a bit more self-conscious. RU-vidrs hate being called "influencers" but what you say and how you say it does in fact bring people closer together, or drives them that much more apart. I for once want to see a community that loves computers as a whole, and not just the brand that you see attached to it.
You know, this RU-vidr, as I have seen before, only states one thing. “Bigger the number, the better it is”. That is not always the case in the real world though. It is either misinformation or propagation of misinformation for getting more views. If he has some authenticity left in him, he should take down this video and upload a correction video. Authenticity > views.
So true. I am a PC user and I also use android now and then but holy shit the people who love to shit on apple have no idea what they're talking about. I used to use a mac with my iphone, I have never seen a more streamlined and efficient ecosystem with ANY other platform I've used. I just came back to this video after the performance reviews were released by other youtubers, i just want to see these people who only care about numbers on paper eat their own words. Apple isn't always making the best decisions, like that charger thing with the new iphones, but the fact that Apple seems to only want to compete with themselves has always resulted in them improving their own products generation after generation. Meanwhile, every other company (I'd say except AMD with their new ryzen processors, where they didn't really focus on just shooting up the clock speeds and rather just on imrpoving the zen 2 architecture) is just focused on giving their new devices a +5 number on their snapdragon processor or 2 more GB in their phone. Those numbers don't translate to shit if the OS is bloated and the apps are not even optmised enough to run on them. You just can't review apple products the way you regard every other company's products. They're playing by their own rules, which is not great but it should be respected and they should not be reviewed the way you review products by other companies. Edit: a small example of apple being focused on themselves is how the iphone 12 still has 60hz display. Maybe iphone 13 will come with 120hz. iPad pro already has Pro Motion (which was also NOT marketed as 120hz), so why doesn't apple just bring it here? Because Apple has one of the industry's best 60hz displays. They just working on themselves. When a higher refresh rate does finally come to an iphone it will be optimized and efficient unlike most battery drainers on androids rn, but by then people will be like "yeah we got this 4 years ago on our android what's new?" They just care about numbers. That's not the whole picture.

I’d say wait and see, it’s still waay too early to come to a conclusion.
@@ts757arse It’s probably somewhere in between. Apple has pulled off some genuinely impressive engineering though I can’t help but think that Intel could’ve been just as good if the right choices were made. Transitions like these have been staring them in the face for nearly 10 years now and they stood by and watched ARM do to them what they did to PowerPC and the like. One thing for is for sure though , from Apple to AMD and stuff like RISC-V, computing in general is about to get a lot more exciting.
I honestly don't think it should shock anyone that Apple's first attempt at these probably won't actually be crowned the fastest CPU in the world. They have likely chosen to roll it out to their lower-end line first for a reason. If people are thinking that these would out-perform an i9 or any of the other slightly delusional things I have seen written online, I could only ask....why? If Apple was seeing that kind of performance they would have split this release into two tiers and released out of the gate with an M1 and maybe an M1X or something and charged a lot more for the higher tier. This is their low tier line at low-tier prices (for Apple). If they can keep up with the CPUs they were replacing, and it looks like they do, I would say that is sufficient. This is just a start. This is Apple we are talking about. Evolution is standard price. Revolutions cost much, much more.

@@reevanamin5865 I don't think the 'real' Desktop is gonna be around much longer in this instance. Can't see them writing a new OS and maintaining it long for these devices when it's make more sense to just go with a slightly more filled out version of the mobile OS...or probably, the same one...just on a bigger device. Maybe give it a 2-3year, if they're not already doing that and people will be left to discover that upon receiving it
@@nicwilson89 100% disagree. In fact they’re been moving in the opposite direction. iPadOS was split out of iOS and watchOS, tvOS are their own separately optimised operating systems. If there’s a market for a desktop operating system, Apple isn’t just going to throw away macOS. This isn’t Microsoft we’re talking about here where they tried to fudge the two together.
MacBook Air is better for UNIX dev work, software dev work, Photoshop, etc. iPadOS is locked down in ways people not in certain industries wouldn’t think of.
@lasest2 I’m not sure that’s anything new. Even current Macs have to get their App bundles signed by an approved developer before the system will launch it. I’m more concerned with Apple possibly requiring signed executable binaries, which is an entirely different concept and more frightening to me.
As Linus explains in another video, he is not referencing the actual hardware itself in the title of 'dumpster fire' but the event itself, and i can see why. I was highly sceptical of their claims simply because we saw a bunch of meaningless graphs and useless claims, none of which we knew the basis of. Like were they comparing to an actually solid laptop like the XPS 13 or a Raspberry Pi PC?

Hah, I retired my 2010 iMac last year. I bought the new 16inch Macbook Pro and use it with a 27inch display and a CalDigit TS3 for i/o. I think it works out pretty well. Excited about the new M series Macs, but I think if you need a Mac, the 16 inch is good.

0:19 An iPad that runs MacOS, has a trackpad the size of an iPhone 12 mini, and a translation layer that allows you to run x86 apps. What an iPad ladies and gentlemen. 1:15 It’s not an ARM CPU, it’s an ARM SoC (system on-chip), which integrates the CPU, GPU and sometimes even RAM, along with other hardwar blocks dedicated to specific tasks right into the same microchip. 2:11 “Who wrote this crap?” that’s Mahatma Gandhi’s quote. 3:10 They’re not calling it ‘Apple Silicon M1’, they’re calling it the Apple M1. 3:52 Why don’t you mention the benefits of soldering down the RAM & baking it into the SoC like more efficient energy use and being able to make thinner & lighter devices maybe even after you mentioned the downside of the inability of after purchase RAM upgrades? Oh I guess you just want to be a RU-vidr influencer that tears certain groups even more apart thanks to your ‘opinion’. 4:01 Yes, they are intenitonally vague because they’re comparing their chips to the ‘latsst PC laptop chip’ that is an INTEL chip. And they’re still selling Intel Macs & Macbooks. In fact, the majority of Apple’s Mac lineup still consists of Intel Macs. So, if you tried to use your brain a little bit, you might have guessed they didn’t want to bash their partner AND the rest of their OWN Macbooks. 4:07 I’m not arguing about how useful the comparison you’re talking about is. But as you might imagine, the “most popular” laptops aren’t usually the fastest ones. But being 3 times faster than a not-so-fast Windows laptop probably still puts them in a competitive place compared to other ‘low-power’ (which are all HIGH-power compared to Apple’s measly 10-15W M1 chip) silicon, like Tiger Lake and Ryzen 4000. 4:32 Even the hottest running Intel Macbook is not even close to being a laptop that’s in the ‘one of the most uncomfortable laptops to hold because the surface gets too hot’ list. You’re a guy that’s held countless number of Macbooks in your hands over the years, what’s the point of acting this prejudiced about the surface temperatures of the Macbook Air? It will perform about as good in terms of the surface temperatures as you might expect from a bigger iPhone chip. Meaning, virtually no heat felt whatsoever. 5:02 You still got the “This makes no sense” look in your face, even though a Macbook Air with a fan makes all the sense that it does. It has a fan, therefore it will be able to sustain its boost clocks indefinitely, and it has a bigger battery. What doesn’t make sense about it? 5:06 ...And also a bigger battery, longer sustained clocks, a 100 bit brighter display, and a bigger trackpad. 5:26 have you paid attention to how thin the lids of Macbooks are, as opposed to the thickness of an iMac? How are you expecting them to be able to put a 1080p webcam in a lid that thin? 6:35 Again... how are you expecting them to be able to put 10GbE networking with basically an iPad Pro A14X chip inside? You’ve said in your iPhone 12 coverage, “2020 has been a rough year so I’m giving it a pass on them for still not announcing the date for the announcement of the new ARM Macs”, and now you’re mad at them for not being able to add 10GbE. Alright. The Intel-based Mac mini that DOES have 10GbE networking option is still being sold by the way, so it’s not like Apple abandoned 10GbE lovers by wiping out all the Mac minis with 10GbE option from their website with these Mac minis with 1GbE. A little bit more patience till next year, when the supply chain turns a little bit back to normal and Apple can make an M series chip taht specifically supports 4 TB4 ports, HDMI 2.1, 10GbE, etc. 6:54 They didn’t change anything with these new Macs as the first gen products because the change on the inside is significantly risky enough that you want as little changed parts on the outside as possible. Pretty clever of Apple, if you ask me. This will result in better user experience thanks to them putting these chips in their well tried and tested enclosures. 7:00 IMMEDIATELY after you say something positive about Apple in this video, you do a follow-up with negatives. Just shut the fuck up, man. I doubt you’ll even miss having eGPU support on these new Macs as the iGPUs inside have dangerously close performance to dedicated laptop GPUs from Nvidia and AMD (if there’s any from them, lol). 7:41 Till EARLY 2021, not 2021. 7:42 Why are you saying something like that like it’s Apple fault? Of course that’s the logical and right thing to do on your WORK computer. Apple isn’t forcing you to upgrade to a new hardware platform immediately. 7:57 Apple has ben SCREAMING this whole time that they WON’T lock developers OR users in to the App Store on the Mac and they’ll be able to distribute & download apps exactly the way they did on Intel-based Macs. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Hg9F1Qjv3iU.html See 52:57 on this video. 8:45 The problem with those first gen Apple products you mentioned that caused them to get dropped from software support relatively quickly compared to the 2nd and 2rd iterations of them (even though they still got as much software support as the longest supported Android devices do) was their performance. Do you REALLY think performance will be a problem with these M1 series chips (M1, M1X, M1Z, etc.)? Early benchmarks have already shown the single threaded performance of these things are head to head with the frickin Ryzen 9 5950X, a 105W CPU vs. a 10W CPU. 8:53 Saying they’re not environmentally friendly because they don’t make their devices easily repairable while ignoring the TONS of things they do for the environment like using 100% recyclable/recycled materials for their products, using almost 100% recyclable packaging, donating for the Californian wildfire, etc. isn’t a very non-biased take. TLDR: Delet dis video.
@@JA2988-e6j It's not? Replacing a whole motherboard and dumping the rest of the old, still working, parts instead of replacing a single component is actually more environmentally friendly? That's interesting.
