Have you tried Stage Manager? More importantly... have you found a use for it?
@MrSpock888

Yes. Stage Manager has made work on an IPAD more productive. One example- Casting spreadsheets on an external monitor while typing a report on the IPAD. Another example is looking at your bank accpunt on an external monitor while recording your expenses on an App in the IPAD screen.

I'm using Amethyst, a tiling window manager, that automatically resizes and moves all windows so that they perfectly share ever bit of screen real-estate that my monitor has to offer. Then I just create multiple spaces (or desktops) for every specific task, one with two finder windows for file management, one with only Firefox/Safari, one for email and sometimes a finder window to drag and drop files, one with signal and telegram on it, etc. Basically I never have to resize any window manually and always just drag and drop them between desktop using the "mission control" overview (4 finger swipe up) or I'm using App Exposé (4 Finger swipe down) to choose between desktops/windows if I have multiple window of the same program open, like multiple Word files on different desktops. 4 finger left/right let's you easily switch between all desktop too, by the way. It's a usage strategy that I learned using the gnome desktop and a similar tiling manager, and so far it's unbeatable efficient for me. The bottom line is, there's nothing that apples stage manage can give me, it's just a worse implementation of the spaces (desktops) feature to me, that still features overlaping windows by default. Always hiding some of their content from the user, until they explicitly click on the window they want to see and then not even in full screen.

Hi Mark, I think I know what the confusion is about for you. When the update dropped, before I even turned it on, I went looking for the directions, trying to figure out the keyboard shortcuts and then use that to figure out how I can use it to make programming a bit faster, or see how else I could use it. And that's where I went all wrong. We tend to think of MacOS as being an already complete experience where things like this, especially features designed to be easily turned off in a hurry, are add-ons. We like to think of them as this whole new thing that you can use a particular way, kind of like how we tend to think of apps with features that we previously didn't have. In my opinion, Stage Manager is not this. It's not a new way of working with your Mac by having this fantastic tool to work with. Stage Manager is meant to be just another part of the ecosystem, just like when Apple added Launchpad, or Mission Control. It's not something to make sense of, it's something that just should have been there from the beginning but nobody thought of it. Think about how we typically manage windows. We have the desktops, we can expand our window into a whole desktop space, we can use Mission Control to bring apps from one desktop to the other, and we can even reorder the desktops so that we can run a workflow from left to right or however you would like. In the dock, we see a row of app icons. The app icons work like pinned shortcuts to launch the app that they pictographically represent, and if you launch one of those apps, the dock lets you know by displaying a little dot beneath the icon. If you don't have one of these apps pinned to the dock, you can launch one from the applications folder, or you can just use launchpad. And when you do, the dock adapts to show you what's going on by displaying an ephemeral instance of the icon, also with a dot beneath it. And that's more or less how it's been since I got my first MBP over 11 years ago. So this system's been around long enough that we got used to it. In fact, we are used to it to the point that we think of it as whole, or complete. Nothing new is needed, merely a design language update from time to time so that things look modern, but nothing like changing up the system altogether. But for all that, MacOS was missing a window manager. Let me exemplify: Say you have a safari window open. You open 3 tabs, and then you're the kinda person who likes having another window, or you need a private browser open. So now you have two safari windows open. But you don't like them stacked up. Now, you can mess around and try to display them both side by side by resizing them... But that's messy. So you open a new desktop and put the windows side by side by flipping back and forth and fiddling with Mission Control. But then you want to use the twitter app, and now you're constantly flipping between Desktops so you can scroll through tweets while you're waiting for RU-vid ads to finish (Google, I swear, I have never done this). And that's what Stage Manager is for. It's literally there now because it's more convenient (and pretty) than switching desktops, or worse, trying to find Finder window number 11 where you finally found where you stashed that PDF so long ago. So, my opinion, Stage Manager isn't there for you to figure out 'a' use for, it's there so you can access from a larger pile of apps that would otherwise be cluttered on a single desktop. Yes, using Desktops is a great way to work. So is this. iPad OS is a whole other story. Before Monday, there were no iPads that could display more than 2 apps at a time, with a third one that pops out of the side like an uninvited designated driver. It was clunky, and you could make it work, but it was not intuitive. So to me, stage manager feels like an attempt at making app management look closer to window management while letting you use 3 apps at the same time and keeping multiple instances in the forefront for quickly switching back and forth. In all, it released with bugs, and the betas actually helped reviewers be critical about it, but don't worry, not only will it mature, but people will get used to it (I think anyways).

But seriously, I try to use Stage Manager. I really like the idea of plugging my personal iPad Pro into my external LG display sitting next to my work MacBook Pro and letting universal control to slide my iPad’s mouse over to my MacBook Pro when I need to do something over there. Really slick - when it works. Stage Manager’s strip is SO inconsistent. And I need to count on TWO HANDS the number of times that my iPad has restarted when using stage manager and external display in the past 30 minutes. I’m not really pushing anything right now - Safari, Messages, Apple Music, simple stuff - and it crashes. One day maybe. - And OMG, RU-vid won’t continue playing when I don’t have the stage with Safari in it in the front?

It seems really silly and convoluted to me. Apple has re-written the multitasking paradigm of iPadOS every year or two since the iPad could multitask with iOS 5. Eventually you have to figure they'll just give up and give the iPad a windowed UI like macOS or Windows, which it probably should have had all along.

I like Stage Manager on iPad, but switch off the left side and dock. In this way, it works almost exactly like current full screen mode, but now with resizable windows! And now iPhone apps and full screen iPad apps work fine, and can co-exists with each others.

the biggest issue I see with stage manager is the fact that there is STILL no window snapping. The biggest multi-tasking issue on macOS is that making your apps split screen is always a multiple tap ordeal. And its a complete pain on the regular desktop. You have to hold opt and long press the green button on the window to bring up the option to move a window to the left or right. With stage manager, I was hoping that you could split your windows up similar to the way windows 11 does it.

Same. I use magnet and to have stage manager and magnet running would just cause issues. Stage manager should have windows snapping on the desktop. They kinda snap on the iPad with it but not the desktop which is just stupid

I kinda like the stage manager on MacOS. As a teacher, I could definitely see the advantage of grouping some items that I will use for various classes. Also, I've always wanted a way to quickly access the desktop and just clear everything away for a second. I haven't seen much use on the iPad yet. I just updated to the latest beta and it no longer crashes every time I try to use it, so maybe it will be come useful. I'm not sure that I will have too many apps open at the same time on such a small screen but the use on a second monitor could be very useful, I would think. Oh well, I think it will be a work in progress.

I'm a Mac user (no iPad) and I am looking forward trying out stage manager. It's the most exciting feature for me in years. Like you, I like to close windows and apps soon and keep everything tidy but I am also struggling to keep windows grouped together based on tasks. That doesn't work well with desktops because the apps that serve as inboxes for new tasks need their own desktop and when I open new windows from there I need to move them to the correct desktop which always feels "far away". Or, I click a link from one of my inboxes and the link opens on which ever desktop I last used my browser on. Probably the wrong one. I hope this works better with stage manager.

I like it for some of my workflows where I am going back and forth between applications. I turn it off for the others. I think that may be why they have it as a switch on/off option. The main thing that really annoys me with Stage Manager is that, when I open a new app, it goes to its own stage. So, if I am working on an app and open the calculator, the app that I was using moves to the side and I have a blank desktop with just the calculator. I would rather have a + button or something that adds the current layout of apps into a stage.

Thanks for your thoughts - I recently upgraded to iPadOS 16.1 and tried out Stage Manager for a couple of days and while I like it, I found that it did not completely outshine Split View. One of the main reasons I use Split View on my iPad is to have Termios (an SSH terminal) open at the same time as Safari if I need something. iOS is notorious for shutting down background apps and I found that Stage Manager works really well. In fact, RU-vid videos continue to play in the background (even though you can't see anything) in Stage Manager, while in Split View, if you minimize it off the screen, it shuts off. Not a really huge reason to switch since I already have a solution for Termios, so I'll stick to Split View since I'm so used to the gestures to move me around. Public note: this message was written in Split View 😂

I think you pegged it exactly right. I’m like you with an irritating habit of wanting to close down everything I’m not using. I have no Finder windows open unless I’m using it at the moment and I shut down all apps except email when I’m not using them. Stage Manager is pretty useless when you already have a clean desktop. If you were to look at my desktop, you’d see no files whatsoever on it with only Macintosh HD and any network drives showing. Stage Manager is there for the terminally messy. I don’t find it all that useful on an iPad either because I rarely ever want to use more than one or two apps at a time, in which case the old multitasking works just fine. I don’t need anything else. I could see a use if I liked running a zillion apps at a time, but I think most only use one or two. We actively work in one app while perhaps monitoring another, e.g. Messages or Mail or maybe watching RU-vid. Rarely have I ever needed three or more. If I ever do, I suppose Stage Manager is a handy thing to turn on, which makes it logical that Apple has it turned off by default. You don’t need it until things get cluttered.

Heya Mark, I've been using Ventura for a few weeks now. I tried Stage Manager for a day. The results??? I turned it off within 10 minutes. For me the full-screen experience is what I'm after. Plus, I'm like you, I close off the apps that I don't need. However, I do utilise two external monitors and the 14" M1 Macbook Pro laptop itself in front of me. So I suppose I create my own 'paradigm of multitasking' by simply dragging my active apps to the monitor of my choice. Interestingly, I always have email on the left, Xcode, can been in either monitor. Chrome, often on the right monitor. word documents are always down on the laptop. So Stage Manager is a big no from me. As always, great video mate! Keep being brilliant!

That’s why it’s optional. Some folks don’t run multiple apps simultaneously hence they don’t need state manager. It is designed for people who want to multitask on an iPad. Apple realizes that old gen of people might not accept the new paradigm, but your son and daughters will. Just like some OG programmers are still using emacs and vim, but the hahe moved on to visual studio code. 🤷🏻‍♂️

People’s excitement over stage manager bringing floating windows to ipad baffles me. Windows being able to obscure each other and not using all of the screen space … I don’t want any of that. On the macos side of window management, if there’s a problem then I’d say it’s that they haven’t built window tiling into the os and you have to go looking for third party apps to get convenient window sizing and arrangement. Stage manager certainly isn’t helping with that. EDIT: okay, I guess there is some built in tiling but the way that it’s implemented as a variation of full screen mode is off putting

Thanks for the video and helpful review! Enjoy the honesty and thoughtfulness of your reviews. I thought I’d chime in with a couple comments. First, I think Stage Manager on Mac is probably not a good fit for long-time Mac users and power users. It may be a good fit for the many iPad users who learn Stage Manager on iPad and make their way eventually to Mac. Second, I likewise find Stage Manager for iPad rather fiddly. I think the “arbitrary” sizes and dimensions of windows might be an intentional balance for developers. I think the arbitrary sizes are to try to fit within dimensions that work well for developers - considering aspect ratios and sizes from various devices/modes they already support and for the material being displayed in the window. Apple could make the window resizable down to the pixel (or approaching that), but this would likely leave significant white space where an icon would bump off the display or on to the next row. A much moire flexible approach would require a lot more work on the part of many developers in design and even more in testing. They already have a large number of sizes and dimensions to support in the older display paradigm. Some developers already support most past iPhone sizes/ratios, iPad sizes/ratios, slide over on those devices, split screen on those devices, etc…. Don’t forget too, both portrait and landscape on many of those devices. This approach allows more app support from day 1 and less developer commitment to simply meet new dimensions. Apple does support some level of relative placement, but this flexible system is less than perfect and really impossible to make perfect. Some time ago, I was envisioning Apple would just bring a limited version of the MacOS display engine to the iPad. This is in a sense what MIcrosoft does on their touch devices. This is not optimal either as touch regions are far too small if you want to use your finger, etc… Stage Manager or an evolved version of it might actually be the best approach so far - particularly for iPad. I do hope Apple will address some of the fiddliness. I find that I accidentally move a window to the iPad from the display when using the app switcher, windows don’t return to their previous configuration when switched out and back in, there’s unusable space on the left and right when both the dock and recent apps are turned off, etc…. These seem to be solvable problems, and I hope Apple will address them. I’ve already provided feedback on the wasted space and invite you and others to make your thoughts knows through the Feedback App under the beta.

I don’t think that’s how Stage Manager is intended to be used. I think it’s intended to be used on a project by project basis when input from multiple apps is repeatedly needed to complete projects. You group your apps in stage manager based on that need(s). Also I think Apple’s main drive is to make multitasking simpler and faster for average users especially on the iPad because they want to move people over to the iPad for 95% of peoples computing needs, and change laptops and desktops functionality over to strictly production rendering machines.

Curious to try out Stage Manager when the full release of Ventura comes out for my M1 Mac Mini. I t does look a bit dodgy and half-baked. Last year, I was looking to supplant my 1st-gen iPad after 9 years of faithful service with that wonderful iPad Mini 6. Fortunately (?), that lovely machine proved too dear, but I did settle on an 8th-gen iPad. I'm more than pleased with it, too! Like you and many, I would've been rather put out...hacked off, really... had Apple cut off at the kness the new iPad Mini 6 so soon in its life. For the foreseeable future, there'll be no Stage Managed iPads in my life. I'm not fussed...but I certainly sympathise with you and others. That old 1st-gen iPad now just plays my falling-to-sleep music at night, 😆.

Great video Mark, kinda baffling the way it works, especially when it comes to split screening apps/windows
@techinrl9869
@techinrl9869 Год назад
I suspect it has to do with the OS spinning up a new desktop when you do a Split View, just as the OS does when you expand a video full screen. You swipe left or right to go between desktops. There is a setting (I forget what it’s called) that restricts the entire OS to a single desktop. It also has the effect of putting a menu bar on only one monitor (default all monitors have a menu bar). Turn that on and perhaps Stage Manager will treat them all as the same desktop. I haven’t tested it, though.

Stage manager is the best feature if you are coming from a Windows machine (especially with multiple screens). It makes up for stupid dock on mac and closes the gap with the task bar on windows. - You can have stage manager on different displays at same time and only shows the windows open on that particular display. - You can easily switch between windows and make your desktop clean. It is not perfect but I really find it useful

The biggest issue for me is creating new groups. I just find I have windows popping up all over the place once I start working properly. It’s ok for media consumption whilst reading email etc. It needs flushing out with more options. Things like the ability for the Finder to be ignored would be handy and using the shift key to add an app to a group should work from anywhere not just from a pile.

So far I have loved it on my M2 IPad Pro. It has been a pleasant experience with external displays. Feels like a nice computer like experience. I just wish it allowed apps to have Mac windows. The window size limitations don’t make sense to me. Just give us an actual windowed experience when stage manager is turned on. It would be a perfect experience if it mimicked Mac more.

Multitasking is not about cramming as many applications as possible on the screen by creating a mosaic. Multitasking is about switching swiftly between applications to complete a task. The stage manager helps to accelerate the application switching process by keeping the windows of the most recent applications visible and accessible. The application in focus can have the optimal window size for the task at hand, neither too large nor too small. The window size is determined by the balance between its content and the empty space around it. The empty space around the centered and focused window draws the user's attention to its content while allowing the background windows of the previous applications to be seen. This way of organizing the screen content reminds me of the importance of negative space to highlight what matters, similar to the concept of "MA" in Japanese culture. When needed, it is possible to have more than one window in the foreground following the same principles mentioned above.

I haven’t used Mac since apple allowed you to set up devices without iTunes! iPad has been my main computer for years and iPadOS 16 has been exactly what I’ve been waiting for since apple started the “what is a computer” campaign for iPad Pro. I do think there is some room for improvement, like with anything, but apple has delivered a clear plan for the iPad Pro like most had asked for, so now we get to see how they build on it and make It something that will benefit all of us. I also don’t see how people feel ripped off by apple, 2018 iPad Pro is 4 years old and the 2020 is nearing 3 years, what multi year old apple devices ever got the same best new features the brand new models get?

For the Mac, I don't see myself using stage manager. To me, it looks like having multiple desktops but with extra steps, and I already use multiple desktops for my Mac. I don't need another, worse way to do that kind of multitasking. For the iPad, I can definitely see myself using that feature if I had an iPad that supports it. However, having it be limited to M1 iPads sucks so much as someone who owns a 2018 iPad Pro which I know can handle the feature, but of course Apple wants to upsell you on a new iPad. Also, I know I did say I would use stage manager on iPad if I had the option, it's still not appealing enough for me to go out and spend another $600 for an M1 iPad. To me, it just looks like a nicer, easier way to do the same kind of multitasking that already exists.

I like Stage Manager on the Mac. I can have virtual desktops for different tasks and have the apps I need in that desktop. Rather than a cluttered mess of windowed apps, I swap them from the side-pane. Much more modern and productive for me and I will stay with that. Tried it on the iPad, but I never really bought the iPad for multi-tasking, I think there is just a tiny loud niche minority that want a Windows-look. I never see the point. Like when I see creators getting excited about three apps squished up on the Fold with an overlay app on top, I wonder how they can be productive on a small device and this is how I feel with my iPad. It is more helpful when you use an external monitor, but again, I use my laptop for multitasking and my iPad for focused one app work. So Stage Manager on the iPad is turned off. It is a choice so I am not going to rage about it. I think over time it will get better on the iPad, it looks good to go on macOS. When I did use it on the iPad, I used full apps so it became a bit pointless. Maybe that will change as it gets more mature. It was not bad, apart from the constant re-springs.

On MacOS, Stage Manager is redundant with Spaces/Mission Control/Expose, and the right side of the Dock. It just feels like a clunkier, chunkier version of using the existing tools, albeit in a sort-of "combined" way. Apple appears to be looking to combine all of that into one interface, and this is their first take on it. I'm also unconvinced, but with some tweaking, I think it could work, even if it feels unnecessary. If it were something that were invoked via a hotkey to either display the list or cycle through apps/"piles"/multi-application-window spaces (like Mission Control/Spaces/Expose are today), it would be a much more seamless switch.

I'm not yet on the beta for Ventura but I'm from a Linux background where accessing other windows from the same app is a heck of a lot easier to do than on the Mac. It's been several years and it still cheeses me off when I use Command Tab and it doesn't show me all of the windows for an open app, just one, and it requires an extra keypress to get it to show the windows. It's frustrating. So I'm looking forward to trying Stage Manager and hoping it will make my life easier. But I don't want to try Ventura until most of the worst of the bugs are worked out. Ask me in about 3-4 months time. Also. As both a subject of the Common Wealth and a bl**dy American Yank, when you complain about the use of the word 'piles', honestly, you sound like a really old English woman. The yanks haven't used that word to mean what it means to you in several decades. That being said, I'll be calling them 'stacks'. I think that's the phrase the Commodore 64 GEOS app referred to similar back in the day. And yes, 'stacks' does sound much better to me than that other word.

I don’t have the new OS on my Mac but do on one of my iPads. And I was very disappointed. Why can’t you drag from one screen to another for heaven sakes? It makes no sense not to be able to do that. I do it every day on my windows box at work - laptop to external screen and back is how you work efficiently. If MS can do it then why on earth can’t Apple? So my iPad stays a lap machine with limited use unless I want it to play Apple TV etc. So disappointed. So clunky Apple. Come on, you are better than that.

Downloaded iPad 16 beta on my M1 pro iPad. I am disappointed with stage manager, it’s tricky and complicated to use. Really no point running more than two apps together. Unless you intend to connect it to an external screen to use it then the present Split View system is almost identical in iPad 15 os. Just Apple hype. The new weather app and tweaks to messages are welcome but these are available across all iPads. Trust me if you can’t get stage manager on your iPad your not missing out. For serious multitasking you cannot ever replace a Mac. Thought of replacing my MacBook Air 2015 as it won’t get Ventura but not just for the sake of stage manager. Will keep it for another year as Mac OS Monterey will security updates for at least a year. That’s good enough for. Don’t believe apples marketing hype.

So the fact that it's not IMPOSSIBLE as they are trying to explain. And M1 iPads have faster storage....... The paging file was there when SSD was not even a thing. Any iPad has pretty fast storage. yes, they could have said that anything lower than 128GB will not support it. that could be understood. And why RU-vidrs are justifying this bullshit. Apple promised from the beginning that iPad Pro and iPad as a whole will receive desktop-class apps. And all we got was Pretension. "Let's pretend iPad is a computer " even if its no were close because we caped it as per software because we have to sell our MacBooks as well.
