I can’t believe how green everything is there. I haven’t seen rain in over 2 months and temps average around 95 to 98. Everything is dead in my area. You must not be in Texas. Even watering the garden doesn’t do much good. Most people’s gardens are already gone around here. I can usually pull half my tomatoes into first freeze. The other half dies to spider mites, disease, drought and heat. Black Krim has always been my favorite. This year Chocolate Stripes has been my favorite but I didn’t grow Black Krim to compare it to. I grow all heirlooms.

Holly is adorable! I’m having a similar results with the Cherokee Purple this year. We grew 3 from seed and while the tomatoes are good they were the first to have issues and haven’t even produced half as much as the other varieties we are trying this year. I’ll definitely grow it again next year, but not as many. The ones that have done the best for us north of Boston MA are Berkeley Tie-dye, black beauty, and Thornburn Terracotta. I tried to grow Carbons and every plant died before they made it to the garden. I picked up several of these after your walk through video and am excited to try them next year.

I had a black prince that just straight up died in the first month of planting. I dug it up from the gaden, took it to the far backyard, put it in the ground, and sent it to god's will. I said tomato plant, "If you live, you live, and if you die, you die" .... well it lived and lived but it never got much bigger than 1 ft high and never produced. Poor prince.

@jefffarris9238
@jefffarris9238 2 года назад
Hi Mark, thanks for the video! Tomato tasting is sort of like wine tasting - different people detect different notes or flavors. So good for you to tackle this very nuanced situation. I know we can all Google all of this info, but it might be a good idea to clearly state whether each variety is an heirloom or a hybrid. Another issue is some people prefer sweeter/less acidic tomatoes, and some prefer more acidic, or that "old-time tomato flavor". It's simply a matter of preference.
@jefffarris9238
@jefffarris9238 2 года назад
Just to clarify - those of us who have grown many varieties of tomatoes understand that not all heirlooms are wonderful-tasking, and not all hybrids are bland or thick-skinned. And if your heirloom plant completely succumbs to disease, is that reason to insist all hybrids are bland or not worth growing? Maybe a future video you can document your experiences with heirlooms vs. hybrids, and what are the pros and cons of each?

Wow, the moment has arrived! This is great. I love seeing taste tests and hearing how the plants behave. So far my favorite dark of the garden is Cherokee Purple. Cherokee Carbon likes to split on me and it also is super small as a plant. Could be because it went in later than the others and is therefore getting more shade. I thought possibly was supposed to be a compact plant. I like Paul Robeson, but I think Cherokee Purple beats it. Black Beauty is just boring tasting to me, although cool to look at. Purple Calabsh is a ruffed one, very prolific. Again, I find the taste boring, however, my niece likes it. Pink Berkeley Tie has not ripened yet so the jury is still out on the best dark tomato.

Two years ago I grew Cherokee Purple, Carbon and Cherokee Carbon for my own taste test. I found Cherokee Carbon (the hybrid ) to be the least desirable. I rated them as follows #1Carbon, #2 Cherokee Purple and #3 Cherokee Carbon. I realize the soil and micro climate is a contributing factor but These were my findings for the three. I also found Cherokee Purple to be the poorest performer of the three.

Some incredible looking and tasting tomatoes in this video. (#2 of 4) Holly...What's Holly up to? Well, lets see. Today she dug up my bed of fall crops that were just sown. I don't know if you noticed in the tomato tasting video Holly lying on her back with her feet up in the air behind me while reviewing the 1st tomato. Well, you can see that there was a edit during that review and Holly wasn't around anymore. Holly was apparently lying on her back thinking what she was going to do next and decided to roll over and nip me in my behind and we had to edit out what I said to Holly! Did you catch the video of me thanking my 4,000 subscribers? At the end Holly decided to splash water in my face and than nip me on the arm. Holly is going through the very terrible two's right now! lol Rotties are a super intelligent breed. Kiera who I just lost in June had a incredibly large vocabulary. Of course, half of it was food related, but it was a large vocabulary. Kiera loved to play hide and seek with the hidden thing being food of course. And it gives you funny memories for the rest of your life. I think of Kiera several times a day. A very sad and horrible thing to go through, but I'm going to honor Kiera by starting a charitable animal trust that helps with dogs. Can’t wait to try it. I have a ways to go before they are ripe though. There are different strains, like Mark said. When I got mine I did some research and found these strains: Red; bi-colored (red/yellow); Halladay’s (pink); yellow (yellow with red/pink streaks in the center); Radiator Charlie (pink-red, this strain is the original strain). Not sure which strain I have but I’m excited to see! I’d say give it a go! Blessings to you! 🙏🏻🙌🏻💞 *The story of this tomato is fun to read about too.

Hi there! The birds only seem interested in the small cherry types, and there are just so many to go around that damage is barely noticeable. The only reason I assume they are eating them is because I find wild cherry tomatoes popping up in random far- far away places around the farm. The rats seem to be preoccupied with the nearby dairy/ horse farms. We also have lots of owls around. Maybe my dog's scent helps as a deterrent as well. I'm not sure. Thanks for commenting! -Mark
