We recently bought a small acreage which has a few 'wild' apple trees. The neighbors have told me the forests surround us used to be apple orchards in the 1930's and 40's. We harvested apples last fall that look identical to the Gravenstein apple in this video. We'd like to press some apples next fall for cider. Is there a way to test with certainty which varietals might be on our land?
lets see from what research I have done it will depend on what it was for it might be a mix it might be eating apples cider apples or cooking apples so cooking is like bramily cookers eating apples are like pink lady, granny smiths orginated in france it was common due to there hardy skin and they kept longer than some others while still being tasteful I bet you will have a few crab trees maybe they can grown wild I would look at the tradition English variety's of all 3 types of apples I think they will be cider apples best thing to do is when they are ripe take one and try it and if its very sour or not like an eating apple its either a cooker or cider apple or take then to your local market
