I love the Ocean band. I can tighten the band to a snug fit and it stays perfect fit throughout the day because of how much it stretches. So if your wrist is somewhere in between two holes then you will always find the best fit.

I was thinking yesterday about what I think the best things about the Ultra and came up with a list that's almost the same as yours. 1. No need to think about battery life/charging. Not just not being actually worried about it, but not even needing to have it in the back of my mind. 2. Love the Wayfinder face. You can get a lot of functionality there that isn't possible with other faces. And having the night vision/night mode is nice. On the negative side: 1. It's taller than the regular Series watches, which I'm noticing more than I thought I would. 2.The sharp edge on the raised bezel can be annoying. 3. The Alpine Loop is a PITA to loosen and tighten, and if you aren't careful the G-clip whacks the display when you take it off. I also question how long those fabric loops are going to last with the clip going in and out of the same loop several times a day. I found that the Ocean band was surprisingly comfortable. It's a softer and stretchier material than the Sport and Nike bands, and the "Midnight" is a good looking dark blue. The value proposition compared to the Series 8 is just as you say. You can basically upgrade from a SS S8 to the Ti Ultra for $50 and you get a much bigger battery, plus some conveniences (like the new action button) for "free." And remember that the Ti S7 Edition was actually $50 *more* than the Ultra. I wonder if the $800 price will increase next year...is this an introductory special, some kind of teaser pricing?

I just upgraded to the Ultra from the Series 3. The ocean band is seriously underrated and I'm not just saying that because that's the one I purchased. I was hesitant at first too, but I needed a secure band for scuba diving. I immediately fell in love with the look and feel of the band. It is incredibly soft and nothing like the sport band from the normal Apple watch models of the past. The white goes so well with the natural titanium. I really hope you give the ocean band another chance, especially if you are wake surfing.

I have the Ocean Band which is same color as your Nomad. In fact I thought initially that’s the band you had-color etc very very close. Love mine. Also, as I’m sure you know, all older 42 and 44 mm Apple Watch bands fit the ultra. And most importantly the watch is absolutely fantastic.

In short, I highly recommend trying the Ocean Band on for yourself at the Apple Store, if possible. -- +1 vouching for the Ocean band here. I tried it on in the Apple Store, and it definitely would be the band I'd choose if I were to get the Ultra (I'm not, so I'm not here trying to justify my purchasing decision). It's tedious to put on. But once it's on, it's the best combination of secure fitment, comfort, and hygiene (doesn't absorb liquids, won't smell, won't stain, etc.) IMO. I like it enough to where I considered getting the Ocean Band to put on my Series 4. As Wildman says, it's noticeably softer & more comfortable than any rubber/silicone type strap I've ever tried - and I'm a "watch person" in general (not limited to smart watches or Apple Watches). Been wearing watches my entire life (seriously, since I was 4 or 5 years old).

respectfully disagree on the ocean band comment. The ocean band is unique and the material is way softer than other "silicone" offerings. Love that its a new look to go with the new look ultra. The other bands make the ultra feel like the older models. Plus the ocean band doesn't move when you get it set right. You should look up how to correctly apply the alpine loop it is nice as well but I also hate it being wet after workouts.

I really wanted to like it but it just didn’t fit right on my wrist😭 it was either too tight or too loose. I liked the look of it but for $100 I want it to fit right on me😔 maybe I’ll try it on again at the Apple Store and maybe I just wasn’t putting it right but I had to return the midnight ocean band and just settle with my midnight solo loop (which I have no complaints on). I still have the white alpine loop that came with my ultra but not sure if I’m a fan of it yet. The solo loop is just too comfortable for me to take off lol

I love the ocean band, it’s perfect for my life style which is mainly walking around muddy or dusty areas when I’m out doing photography. When I get hot and sweaty mixed with dust and grime I can wash the band over and not worry about it.

I picked one up too. Coming from version 4, this was a great upgrade and it actually makes the series 8 design look old. The bigger display/text was appreciated since I am slowly going down the road of occasionally needing reading glasses. Battery life is great and everything just works. It took a while to get used to the lower baseline brightness in lower light conditions. That would be my only complaint. Hopefully, the update the software to increase it just a little bit. Otherwise, the brightness in all other conditions is awesome.

@@kakahass the display is definitely clearer. The text is slightly larger and is easier to read. I do track my heart rate and the addition of the blood oxygen is pretty cool. Heart rate monitor seems to be active which I like since I like data. I can correlate blood oxygen level while I sleep to how I feel in the morning. Aesthetically, it is more substantial which feels good. It feels like a substantive watch making the series 8 style feel like a bracelet. It’s not that much bigger, but for the price of the smaller stainless steel series 8, this feels and looks much better. I have not tried out the workout features yet, but I am confident it will be fine. Lastly, battery life. I charge every two days versus everyday in the afternoon.

Great review, but sorry you are completely wrong about the Ocean Band 😂 It’s super comfortable and, having worn the sport band for the last few years it’s a nice change and I like being able to adjust it a bit more. It also makes the watch look more like an actual watch and the midnight blue looks great against the titanium and orange of the watch. I do want the trail band when it comes out though.

I got the Ultra with the midnight ocean band and I don't think its that bad at all, and goes well with the watch IMO. That being said, its comfortable, but not enough for daily wear for me, but it definitely will have its purpose for beach, swimming, and other outdoor stuff.

Jord is spot on with the value proposition of the Ultra. I would not even think of parting with my series 7, until I saw the Ultra. The Ocean band is soft and after if warms up for a few minutes on the skin it conforms better to the contours of my wrist than the Apple sport band I had with my series 7. The ocean band is so comfortable and the titanium case is so light, that i forget i have a dive watch on. I can never say that about my Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 45mm in all steel that I actually dive with.

At first I didn’t like the look of the Ocean Band either, but after two weeks I’ve come to really appreciate it. I thought it was ungainly, but it’s actually quite badass, and the clasp it highly functional and very secure. I’m glad the Apple Store was out of the band (I thought) I wanted, because the band I didn’t want is great…so it goes.

The Navy blue/dark blue one is fine. Looks very good to me, which is the one I got. I have plenty of blue shirts that it goes well with so, its one of the reasons I picked it. However, I do want a different band. I wish they had a titanium metal band to match it. One for dress and one for every day.

Agree with you Max, im upgrading from Series 3 AW and tbh i was a bit skeptical to buy this Ultra watch however after tested it in apple store i felt in love. i bought it through AT&T and will be paying 33$ a month with the included line. im planning to keep this watch for the next 5 - 6 years as i did with my series 3, and being so durable it was the catch for me.

I have a series 8 and really like it. Have to charge it every other day but knew that before I bought one. Apple is advertising the ultra has a long battery life but in fact everything under a week is short. If I pay €1000 for a watch it should have more then 3 days in my opinion. For the rest it’s a really nice watch, what I like about it is that it doesn’t scratch easily like the other Apple Watches. Don’t understand why people get low battery anxiety, it seems like people these days get anxiety over almost everything, it’s crazy.

Love my new Ultra. Even though I have small wrists and the bulkiness took a few days to get used to, I am very happy. I also did not like the Alpine band that came with the watch, it’s very hard to make size adjustment even though I had the small size band. I bought the Ocean band, which I ended up returning. I am using the Apple Sports Loop and also bought a few other bands on Amazon. I am 70, so I am not in the market Apple is targeting, however for every day casual use, this watch can’t be beat. I disagree with your take on the ocean band. It’s more comfortable than the other silicone bands and offers a more secure fit. The new look is also unique and the white ocean band matches any casual outfit you pair with it. If I want to dress it up, the stainless steel link bracelet from Apple is the way to go. The brushed steel look is a great match with the titanium, I was pleasantly surprised.

I looooove my new Ultra... I do agree about the Alpine band... I wanted it so bad the Trail one... but here's a little trick that worked for me... I wear the Alpine band the other way, not like Apple is telling you to do.... And I feel it's a little easier for me to put it on and it's more fit too.

The guard on the crown for not inadvertently turning on siri when you bend your wrist is a low key big deal. I always have to turn my watch to the bottom of my wrist when working out to avoid that from happening. Not any more with the ultra.

Totally agree with all your points. It is best bang for buck especially for battery life. It does look cool. I was worried it would be too big but it is totally fine for my wrist. Battery life is great for me. Day and a half at least. I usually do an hour workout per day.

I have a titanium S7 41mm I pre ordered last year. It’s classy looking, and rugged enough. No screen scratches at all, I work outside and hike and run often. The ultra is awesome looking, but 49mm is too large for me. Bring big battery to small watches Apple! Nice review!

I would agree. The Ocean Bands are uncomfortable. Especially when typing on a Mac. I could feel those metal loops rubbing against the machine when resting my wrist on it.

Good review but I totally disagree with you on the bands. I'm awaiting my Ultra with Trail Loop band but in the meantime I ordered a green alpine loop for my Series 6. Love it. Never had issues with nylon type bands swimming in the ocean with my Series 6. My automatic dive watch has a nylon "nato" band. No issues.

I wend from the AW2 to the AW7 last year and would have probably skipped the incremental AW8 upgrade if not for the Ultra. I’ve ran the Chicago Marathon back in 2018 and am looking forward to a 2023 marathon run, which means I’ll be training long distance at least half the year, and I am not a fast runner by any means, so the longer battery life with the LTE enables so I can run without a large phone, and the dual GPS tracking are clutch features for me! I also agree with the Alpine Loop assessment. Although the orange is attention grabbing, I don’t see it practical unless I go rock climbing or bouldering which is not my preferred sports. As for “casual” mode, I’ve been getting by with Apple’s SS Link bracelet, but I do have the Nomad Ti bracelet on back order.

Purchased for battery life, siren and emergency SOS when hiking. Ocean band is comfortable, looks good (midnight) and I think it’s modern looking and great, but an EXTRA $50 for the band extension is just stupid ridiculous - but it more than goes over my wetsuit, thinking of using it over my jacket when hiking in the cold due to its cold resistance and ruggedness, or even when shoveling snow (don’t ski anymore).
